the less google works as a universal search, the more the market is open for other search engine.
conservative_zombieJan 27, 2011
That's pretty astute.
seedsJan 27, 2011
You're right... They're just shooting themselves in the foot.
Closed AccountJan 27, 2011
Yup...another search engine will bill itself as the search engine for sites that are mostly used for illegal activity. And then it will take over the market share lead from Google!
Gotcha.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

They already censor a bunch of other things. My days of using Google are officially over.
What ever happened to 'Don't be evil'? Oh yea, power and money have a way of changing things.
apextekJan 27, 2011
we will see, NPR just said yesterday that the CEO will be stepping down and the CEO from the 90's is coming back, hopefully he will reverse this but on the flip side Ill be looking to replace google on this.
grungegbunnyJan 28, 2011
What search engine are you using as a replacement?
followth3leaderJan 28, 2011
scroogle
softcurvesJan 28, 2011
Scroogle has Alexa ranking of 6900 :-( And seems so "poor"
RexoffJan 27, 2011
I couldnt have said this better myself. hahaha Absolutely agree! hahah
neosporinJan 28, 2011
It's not a deterant for privacy, it's too help reduce the flood of lure websites that use search keywords for it's page names. For example, if you were to search "Avatar 1080p" you'd get a website listed as "Avatar 1080p Free Down Now MegaUpload Rapidshare Sex Free Dance" that usually contains malware, and there were usually hundreds of results that force their way in.
It's not THAT hard to understand.
tremaultJan 27, 2011
yep, this is going to damage google and many people will start using other search engines.this may not be as bad as some people may think.
llanowarJan 27, 2011
This doesn't seem like that big a deal. You can still do the searches, but it simply won't auto complete.
If you look for Avatar 1080p, for example, the suggest box will no longer add rapidshare or similar. But when you add it yourself it will still search for them as always.
They've been doing this for a lot of things, namely porn related.
I should add that I still don't agree with it. But I doubt it will have much of an impact.
charlesmayJan 27, 2011
I totally agree. Hey everyone, remember back a few years ago when we used Google and didn't have the auto-complete feature? How did we ever get by?
njdoo7Jan 27, 2011
Censorship is still censorship, even if they only start out censoring a small fraction of functionality.
ronnisrFeb 7, 2011
Makes me wonder if you think that Google should leave all kind of other stuff like child porn in the search results? Censorship is censorship i agree, but business is also a business and can be damaged for not having censorship as well as having.
apextekJan 27, 2011
i just tried it for s**ts and giggles and it still working for now.

punky260Jan 27, 2011
I know why I use http://ecosia.org/ - Good search, and no unnecessary log of all your data ^^
tawtJan 27, 2011
ecosia uses bing for searches....all your searches are still logged
punky260Feb 3, 2011
Yes, but the search is logged done from a "user" named ecosia.
So like using a proxy its not possible, or hardly possible to trace my searches back !
tawtFeb 3, 2011
Cool. Thanks for bringing the site to my attention, it seems like a really good idea. Just wish it used Google instead of Bing
punky260Feb 3, 2011
Yes, sometimes Google brings better searches. But I like to have a different "view" when I search for something.
But I like the "preview"-function you can enable in the settings, really nice idea =)
oboyJan 27, 2011
They're censoring "Torrent", but they aren't censoring 7 must worse things: http://digg.com/news/technology/google_censoring_torrent_search_suggestions_7_terrible_things_they_don_t_censor_graphicComment is buried, click here to see the rest.

What?
Closed AccountJan 27, 2011
Why is it so bad for you that people might start using another search engine?
(And no...they won't. this will not hurt Google's market share at all. Well...ok...maybe a little. Their share may drop 0.000001% because of this.)
SmashingCirclesJan 27, 2011
ugh, censorship on the internet is just wrong
harmilJan 27, 2011
Censorship is the wrong word, here. Not putting Catcher In the Rye in the front window of the bookstore is not the same thing as censoring it. That's what Google's done, here.
From another post of mine on a related article:
BItTorrent is a tremendously useful protocol that major corporations use to update their software, OS distributors use to send out their product, etc. Helpfully completing the term as a suggestion would be very useful in many situations that have nothing to do with piracy.
That being said, Google is in no position to opt-out of this behavior. The courts have made it very clear that they are taking a broad view of contributory infringement, and being both popular and helpful are now essentially against the law in the U.S. What Google has done is to try to take a middle-road. By not offering to help you find these terms, but also still indexing useful data, they are trying to establish what the courts will tolerate from the media industry. They'll still be sued again and again, no doubt, so they are attempting to defend their position of *not* censoring actual search results for these terms.
What I have to wonder is if a non-U.S. corporation is eventually going to come along and offer search that people will prefer because they're not so encumbered. So far, Google's search is still excellent (some have made persuasive arguments that it may no longer be the "best," but it's damned good), but if someone can make a real claim to be as good *and* unencumbered...
neondistractionJan 27, 2011
Who cares? I've used torrents for years but never once have I used google to search for one. I've always either gone with a torrent search engine or the good old pirate bay.
s1engJan 27, 2011
No way.

badsyntaxJan 27, 2011
Thats the final straw, once google starts censoring *any* search terms they are no longer a valid search engine IMO. I just switched to duckduckgo.com, and updated my hosts file so if I accidently type google, it takes me to duckduckgo instead.
Damn corporations.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I don't think this will have much of an effect. Google is still searching for the torrenting sites, they just won't auto complete or insta search. woo big deal.

It appears that my google custom search engine that is set up special th to search for pages on these sites is unaffected. See:
http://www.google.com/cse/m?cx=000962681151310026215:9axb0afeqja&cref=&theme=DEFAULT
In fact at first glance it only appears to be censored from auto suggest results.

It appears that you didn't read the f**king article since the article made it very clear that that IS all that is affected...just the auto-suggest results.

Net Neutrality in danger again
Closed AccountJan 27, 2011
No it isn't. I love when ignorant people like you scream "New Neutrality" for EVERY little think involvemng the internet. The term has NOTHING to do with a private company choosing to not auto-sugest sites that are primarily enaged in illegal activity

Read the article you pack of fickle mushheads. It's being "censored" from the INSTANT and AUTOCOMPLETE results. If you want to search for torrents all you have to do is hit "enter". Calm down.
kinserJan 27, 2011
Who uses google to search for torrents anyway?
pauldavisJan 27, 2011
Let's start calling "torrents" "bibles".
rblancarteJan 27, 2011
Buried for incorrect title. Google isn't censoring anything. They are simply removing these terms from auto-complete & instant results. You can still search for them.
blahtskJan 27, 2011
It may not seem like a big deal, but consider the "foot in the door" phenomenon. Censorship starts small...
Closed AccountJan 27, 2011
OK...let's consider that cphenonmenon. From what I see...LOTS of little bitches like you scream how if this is allowed, then some time in the future, they may possible consider thinking about pondering maybe expanding this. And of course, all the little bitches (like you) are shown to be wrong EVERY TIME. Yet the little bitcvhes (like you) still make those predictions.
There is no "phenomenon" little bitch. IT simply doesn't happen. You just claim it will.
It really is sad. You now really DO think that reality changes simply if you claim it enough times.

pacocrowleyJan 28, 2011
I really don't use google for torrent search, I found it very incomplete. I need comments and ratings of the torrents.
Anyway, they're taking bad steps into censorship; you can't expect that google just from one day to another say: "some keywords are banned from the search"; it has to be gradually.
dubmediagroupJan 28, 2011
pretty soon they'll censor ponymash.com and then they will have really jumped the shark. schmidt wouldn't have this.
slyprofanityJan 28, 2011
Not that big of a deal its only instant search.
Welcome to the new world order. Taking your rights and freedoms one bit at a time.

enantiodromiaJan 28, 2011
According to the Web20 generation, Google may as well be burning down the Great Library of Alexandria with the evil censorship!!!
Kids, get a grip. This affects no one, no where. If you're that much of an idiot you are using Google to find torrents, you probably don't deserve them in the first place.
teru382Jan 28, 2011
I think this measure is a good attempt to protect the entertainment industries. It is not exactly a censorship.
