Apple has really streamlined the process of finding/receiving software and slashed prices more than anyone would have thought a few years ago.

To Google, everything is about ads. Software is important only to the extent that it somehow enhances their ad business. At some point, this has to get rather tiresome for the user.

Nah, that is not really true. They sell search engine appliances to companies. I think they offer higher quota versions of their free app engine platform for a fee too. They have a commercial "pro" version of their 3D graphics/modeling technology also. Not all their revenue comes from ads.
If you look at Google's ads, they take up less space per ad than other ad syndicating services' ads do. Google's ads are not really bigger than the size of a fortune cookie fortune.
Most non-Google ads are huge animated or picture-laden monstrosities and often eat up CPU cycles like they were candy.

So your conclusion is that because 0.0001% of their revenue comes from software sales and the other 99.9999% comes from ad revenue, it's not really true that they're all about ads?
