It's about time!

noooooo :'(

What I really don't understand is people's rationale with pirating. Why don't you just buy music? It's not that expensive. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Music isn't a right, its a commodity.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

If I buy an album and it turns out to be s**t, I can't return it for a refund. If I like an album and want to support the band, buying that album puts a few pennies into the artist's pocket and several dollars into the label's, producer's, manager's, and retailer's pockets. The best way to support a band is to pirate out their music, get your friends hooked on it, then bring 'em all to the concerts and buy their merch.
Now do you understand?
mastercosbyDec 6, 2010
Dumb excuse. You can listen to almost any song on an album before you buy it these days, for free and legally. Why must people keep insisting on trying to rationalize pirating?
elmuerte17Dec 7, 2010
Did you even read the rest of my comment, or just start nerdraging after the first sentence? Piracy has been proven not to hurt sales and in some cases improve them.

Don't feel like reading data? Ask Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails how much they've suffered financially after releasing music for free. I'm guessing facts don't hold much sway in your world, so I'm probably just wasting my time posting them here, but figured I might as well give it a go.
And no, you can't listen to almost any song on an album before buying it, especially if your musical tastes extend beyond top-40 radio trash or live in a country where services like Pandora are not available.

Google now policing the world, yet another step towards world domination
Closed AccountDec 6, 2010
Or just policing their own product. I guess to you that is the same.
onlyscDec 6, 2010
troll
arschgaudiDec 6, 2010
Their product? That would be search results.
meetjoewhiteDec 6, 2010
OMG Google, give it a rest already!
randomguy2525Dec 6, 2010
I won't claim to be innocent, but I've got no problem with rational attempts to stop piracy. More of this, less 100K lawsuits against individuals.
randomguy2525Dec 6, 2010
For all the waves Jon Stewarts rally made on here the Digg hive mind is quite bury happy for any dissenting opinion no matter how calmly stated. I'm beginning to understand why there are so few comments these days.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Not Google's place, but nit-picking about what Google should and should not be allowed to do is about as futile as inventing the hot air balloon in a world where the F-16 already exists.
Closed AccountDec 6, 2010
It sure as f**k IS Google's place to be doing this with their own search. Holy s**t..how on earth do you think it is not their place to change their OWN system so that it can't be easily used for illegal activity? It is not only their place, but their ethical duty.
chrisvazquez1Dec 6, 2010
Aaaaaand now I'm switching to Bing...When corporations start to regulate you know something is fishy. I'm not a big infringer but I will not accept a corporation telling me what I can and can't use. Stay out of my bedroom, damnit.
hipmanDec 6, 2010
Yeah, sure you won't use google anymore..Who care you kidding.
schmuckofniDec 6, 2010
Its just removing the auto complete feature when you type something in. I'm not sure how this is supposed to help curb piracy, but I'm sure something else will replace Google if they continue to censor such things.
kingofnightlifeDec 6, 2010
The problem is that google is going to end up looking more like a list of sponsored results, no thanks. If the industry wants less pirating, stop being so goddamn greedy and adapt to the changing market. Why do I have to drive to the store to rent a plastic disc out of the redbox and waste gas, then return it again, when I could simply hit OnDemand and watch it instantly. The problem is Comacast wants $5 to do so. Why dont they just charge the $1 or hell even double, There would be no such thing as redbox. But in a horrible economy we are being gouged at every opportunity in any way the industry can. The only thing that creates change for the better is hitting them where it hurts...the money their losing...then they listen..then we all prosper
GunkertyJebDec 6, 2010
Clearly you care about this more than I do.
If Google limits their own searches then they are playing favorites with a tool they created, but one which reaches way beyond the scope of their company. It's like the US saying: 'We invented Nuclear weapons, so we get to decide who gets them and how and who they use them against.'
Can you not imagine a scenario where Google abuses this power to meet their needs or those of their constituents, but which negatively impacts other groups of people?
prolikewhoaDec 6, 2010
Someone will find a way around it.
Closed AccountDec 6, 2010
I don't see any of their 4 new rules thwarting anything
elmuerte17Dec 6, 2010
except folks that are terribad at spelling and wouldn't find anything without Google saying, "Did you mean to search for X instead?"
UnfashenomicDec 6, 2010
I doubt it will do much, but Google can do what it wants to figure out search results. The algorithm is a black box to 99% of the population anyway. I agree with someone above however, the more limiting Google becomes the more it will advantage their competitors.
gzeroDec 6, 2010
Google tends to do things after collecting huge amounts of data, and is pretty good with avoiding false positives. I doubt something as simple as the word "torrent" will get filtered out.
lilrabbit129Dec 6, 2010
Et tu Google?
agnesstDec 6, 2010
Will Google buy iTunes? Why Google so fights against piracy?
