I'm not sure what's confusing about using your real name rather than an alias. Apparently people are just surprised that Google wasn't kidding and is cracking down on the obvious offenders. It's a social network for real people to connect to real people. If you "have" to use an alias then you're doing it wrong. You're obviously not intending to connect only with people you actually know.
Google+ not allowing itself to be used as a fan site is actually something that will separate it from Facebook.
QuinnWolfJul 24, 2011
I really wish people would stop comparing Google+ to Facebook. It's like comparing sushi to a festering turd that needs to be flushed down the toilet but nobody wants to pull the handle.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

except this turd is freeze dried and covered in gold and polished thanks to all the free advertising
DURRRRHURRRRJul 24, 2011
So what about people in oppressive countries where using their real name could quite literally be life-threatening?
DURRRRHURRRRJul 24, 2011
Or bloggers who blog on sensitive topics, or a person who is trying to hide from an abusive spouse, etc, etc.
There are numerous legitimate reasons to use a pseudonym.
The reactions to this remind me of the idiots who say, "If you don't like the TSA, just don't fly!" As if everyone has a choice and all forms of transportation are equal.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
isidrisuJul 24, 2011
Don't let the ppl threatening you into your circles and block them?
Google+ is based in the US.
Also, you can use your Commonly used name - that can be your alias. But the spouse example doesn't make sense because you can block them.
Now if the abusive spouse was allowed to make a false name the victim couldn't block him.
Google's in the right.
chrontiusJul 25, 2011
The spouse can keep making fake accounts, but Google needs to observe them for screwy behavior before they can be blocked. It's not that they're "allowed" it's just a upper limit on Google's ability to ban the f**kers.
jpdeveerJul 25, 2011
Your screen name serves as a public alias.
ka5p3rJul 24, 2011
don't use the internet if it could be life-threatening.
brothercheJul 25, 2011
that's right, only respectful sheep should be allowed to use Great Leader's gift of internet communication
hood15Jul 24, 2011
If doing something could threaten your life, don't do it. If you must use an alias, use a site that allows you to.
chrontiusJul 25, 2011
Arab Spring much?
brothercheJul 25, 2011
It doesn't make sense why you've been dugg down. Your comments are completely reasonable -- maybe some google engineer isn't keen on backtalk
ka5p3rJul 24, 2011
and hopefully spammers as well
donniehoward08Jul 25, 2011
with the way gmail blocks spam, I think that google+ will do a fine job.
smilingoatJul 25, 2011
This is exactly what i came here to comment on. "no clear answers" suggests that it is a mystery as to why the accounts are being removed, however in the description they tell you exactly why, people arnt using their real names which is a requirement of a google+ account.

Not a big fan of competition huh?
That's how things get improved on. If Facebook was like "1 social network (myspace) is good enough" we'd still have myspace (lord help me)
stewartwflillJul 24, 2011
Facebook didn't really improve anything. It just deleted all the profile junk that was distracting. But beyond that there isn't really more to improve on. I would be just as happy with the facebook from 4 years ago than with the one of today. I don't need to bother begging for a Google + account invite when there is nothing MIND BLOWING to offer compared to FB.
fossilhuntressJul 25, 2011
The G+ accounts should be flagged and those flagged should have the opportunity to prove that they are real before being deleted. Perhaps having the celeb post a pic holding up a sign that says, "yep, it's really me" or letting those with nicknames add their real names in.
soulisblackJul 24, 2011
hey...they seem to have more common with Facebook than they realize....the net is filled with complaints about facebook doing the exact same thing....google it and see it the truth
clokwiseJul 24, 2011
This is fukced up, Google. I've got 10+ years of emails, plus website analytics, picassa, and heaps more stuff all linked to my Google account. After reading these reports, there's no way I'm gonna sign up for Google+ and risk suddenly losing it all for unknown reasons.
yammibowlaJul 24, 2011
Yeah i was looking forward to signing up also. No way I an doing that now if I risk losing everything else. NO way in hell. Screw that I'll just stick with facebook
youaretooJul 24, 2011
If you use your real name then you have nothing to worry about. If you don't want to use your real name for whatever reason, don't use G+.
sremickJul 26, 2011
Guess you missed the parts about people using their real name and still getting all their Google stuff suspended, with no recourse.
waterboy1628Jul 24, 2011
GMail only started in 2004... regardless you should keep everything backed up! Google+ allows you to download your data!
clokwiseJul 25, 2011
Indeed, but you see, I imported all my emails into Gmail back from when previously I used Eudora and Outlook, dating way back to 1996. It's quite convenient to reference an old conversation, albeit I don't do that frequently. I do gmail backups once a year - it's quite a long process.
But possibly even worse than losing my old email, is losing access to my current email address. Think about it.. if you lost access to your gmail account, suddenly things that require email verification won't work for you. That can include online banking, domain names you own, or even something mundane like changing the email account your Facebook profile is linked to.
So far it's only speculation that people are losing their G+ accounts because of fake names, no one really knows for sure if that's the only reason.
arcayneJul 25, 2011
Google+ accounts, not Google accounts.
son0fhobsJul 25, 2011
Did you read the article?
A few very prominant people, after being banned from google+ also lossed all google accounts, apps, emails, everything. Apparently backing up means a heck of a lot more than just our computer.
I'm getting another account & offline copies, cause one way or another, losing data is pretty inevitable. It's just about limiting the risks and consequences.
son0fhobsJul 25, 2011
OMG, I really agree. Yet on the otherhand, I've begun backing up more an more things, in more an more ways. External HD's, Online, etc. It's about time to backup my emails!
Download offline, or easier yet, setup another email account and have the all forwarded. I still prefer offline, but it's a quick solution none-the-less.
Generally there's an offline copy of everything I put online, facebook, online photos, vids, but given limited HD space, Multiple accounts/services online should do just fine.
Anyway, it's sad to see Google getting so much power, and the affects of it not being used well. Hopefully this won't continue.
shoebox639Jul 25, 2011
Correct me if I'm wrong, but companies never delete data. They just make it look like it's been deleted. Unless of course you specifically ask them to or with the data liberation with g+. You can tell by how fast the person in the article's account was restored. If it was a hard delete, there's no way that stuff is coming back.
cAnWeBeSeWeIoUsJul 24, 2011
Not a part of G+ or FB, but I've gotten the impression FB is full of Troll accounts, maybe moves like this will help prevent this kind of activity.
donniehoward08Jul 25, 2011
I must say I am surprised you aren't on FB.. well done my friend.. well done indeed
prettyboyfloydJul 24, 2011
A lot of these accounts are definitely real people with real names (just not standard normal names). This is what happens when you let an automatic algorithm administer your new beta social network!
breadfredJul 24, 2011
Maybe, but fair enough on Google. Parents should stop giving their kids ridiculous names.
DURRRRHURRRRJul 24, 2011
Parents should be retroactively sterilized for having profoundly stupid children. Starting with yours.
ka5p3rJul 24, 2011
and you
breadfredJul 24, 2011
Obviously you do not know my kids. Let me enlighten you; I do not have any. And in all honesty, my comment was pretty flippant - but with a grain of truth. Who in their right minds would name their kid of the place it was concepted? Would you like to be reminded of your parents having a f**k every time you hear your name? Or names like the Beckhams give their kids? With NUMBER in it?
And, why the personal attacks?
stewartwflillJul 24, 2011
I'm with you. I have a friend who named one of their kids Zzixet. What are people thinking?
beforesputnikJul 25, 2011
I like original names. I think people should stop naming their kids "Mike" and "Katie".
johnnysoftwareJul 24, 2011
Google needs to be more proactive and clear about their policies. This is the second time I have heard a new policy restriction emerging after Google+ has gone live.
They should do one of those little automated "presentations" or even a YouTube movie that spells out in plain talk what people and companies can/cannot and must do in order to be in compliance with latest or upcoming ToS agreement.
It sounds like right now Google has a low-grade identify freakout fever. They really have to articulate a really easy explanation that spells out implications/nuances, not leaving anything "hanging" or unspoken.
Maybe they should hire some professional tech writers and/or journalists to help them present the concepts of their new rules clearly. If Google blows this, then the number of active Google+ individual users could plummet to the number of active Google Wave users -- before the organization users even get accounts. If the two groups don't sign up and meet each other, Google+ will be still born.
QuinnWolfJul 24, 2011
Let's just say Google has always lacked the "personal touch" and everything is automated to the fullest extent by their software engineers.
Ever have an Adsense account? Funny, you put Google's ads on your site but they have no phone contact number for publishers. Send an email and you get a canned response. Even eBay and Paypal have better customer service.
For that matter, everything Google does has no contact information. Android phones, search engine, Gmail, Adsense, etc.. The only thing they hire support for is Adwords.
Google is all about minimizing customer service. What makes anybody think Google+ will be different is beyond me. Then again, all Google+ is all about mining people's personal data because after all, Google is a marketing firm.
wilhoitmJul 25, 2011
Google has a good thing with Google+ and they are trying hard to screw it up! Facebook must be laughing!
cimmerianxJul 25, 2011
Google needs your real name, otherwise, its attempts to properly link your online life to your real ID for proper data-mining will fail and it can't sell access to your personal details for as much money.
HappyNuggetsJul 24, 2011
that is crazy stuff. I hope I don't become one of their victims
debasisgJul 24, 2011
Aren't you tired of Social Media hype? Of course, the social media will continue to rise because there are so many more new people being introduced to this and so much money to be made with targeted marketing.
themantogotoJul 24, 2011
Like half the people on there I know are just there to say I'm in google+! and never go to it again. They basically ran out of space a few weeks ago if i remember so who knows.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
QuinnWolfJul 24, 2011
Yeah, Google ran out of server space?
brothercheJul 25, 2011
Well, why do you think start services like this out with limited access which grows over time. They allow themselves ramp-up time with a limited number of servers to process bugs and growth cost. It's not like they have an unlimited number of real and virtual servers sitting there dedicated to every single task.
