This sounds like Google Suggest, which is an old tool I used in early 2005 (before Google Maps was unleashed).
The real question is why did it take Google so long to release this when they had similar technology years ago ?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

cool! Can't wait to try it out on my iPhone :)

This is a HORRIBLE idea. AT&T's network is already over-crowded with all the iPhone users.
How can we make it worse? Oh, I know! Let's make sure that every time anyone wants to do a web search, instead of waiting for them to write it all out and only run ONE query, we'll run a separate query after every letter they type along the way!
I like it on the desktop, but since AT&T already throttles what most iPhone users can do with their phones because their network is too slow to handle the iPhone's full capabilities, this is a step in the WRONG direction.

It's not Google's responsibility to worry about AT&T's network.

I was skeptical about this service at first, but now that I've had a chance on my desktop to use it regularly, I have to say that it adds a whole new dimension to using my search engine.
