Leave it to Google
lordcrimmehOct 10, 2010
Wait what? Is it actually legal to have a car on the roads without a driver?
I suppose since corporations are people now, the insurance and car could be registered to google, and they would be liable... But really? Not sure I buy this.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Why ? Why would he care that Google is throwing money down the drain?
Guess what, stupid f**k...Microsoft is NOT competing with Google in any area that Microsoft gives a f**k about. At least not in a way that Google matters at all.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Amazing how the technology involved is getting smaller and smaller as time goes on. I've seen examples of several generations of 'automated cars' and each time the equipment strapped to them is less and less. The first one I saw basically had a spot for a backup driver, and the rest of the innards were filled with electronics, and the roof was a foot deep in sensors.
8 years? I'm willing to wait.

Someone does not know how to use the word "brainchild"!
FTA: "Google engineer Sebastian Thrun (the brainchild of the project who also heads the Stanford AI lab and co-invented Street View as well) writes."
Surely the project is his brainchild and not him its!

If Microsoft built a car.

An automated car would take all the fun out of driving.
fungie5Oct 10, 2010
But it would put even more safety into driving. If all the cars on the road use this kind of technology, they could be made to talk to each other so that if you're on the road and a car ahead of yours starts to break or perform some other maneuver or has a tire blowout, your car and the others in the immediate vicinity will react to the situation much faster and in a more appropriate way than you could manually.
Besides, people could have all sorts of new fun while driving. Imagine the possibilities.... eg. making out with your girlfriend in the back seat of your car on your way to work.
fungie5Oct 10, 2010
...drive to party with girlfriend...
...we both get totally wasted....
...car drives us back to my place... designated driver no longer required!
... car drives her back to her place at midday the next day... I'm still in bed
...car drops her off and comes back to my place, parks itself in the garage....I'm still in bed...
Go Google! I'm in!
bonestampOct 10, 2010
why go to your place first? You could take care of business in the back while the car is driving to her place to drop her off. I recommend getting a van though.

Even Google is not going to get you a girlfriend.

Yeah but we're forgetting something, it's Google. I'm ok with using a web service for 8 years in beta, but who's going to get in a car perpetually stuck in beta?
amberiteOct 10, 2010
The single greatest advantage of this technology is that it will virtually eliminate traffic jams, even on the most congested roads. The reason traffic jams happen is because of drivers that over-compensate with breaking / stopping, which creates a "wave" effect behind them. Magnify this over 1000s of drivers on any given congested road, and you have gridlock. With computers driving cars, you eliminate the over-compensation, and most traffic jams with it.
Also, computers won't rubberneck when there are accidents.

No it won't. Even if reality ceased to be and this car EVER gained widespread use, the cars would NOT be able to compensate for bottlenecks on highways.
IT is funny that you act like an expert when you have NO IDEA what causes traffic in most situations.
Ignorance is fine. Everyone is ignorant on many subjects. But ignorance turns into stupidity when you still talk about a subject when you are ignorant of it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Take a half-minute drive inside the Google CarBot to see what goes on:
