Update: Brian Proffitt tracked down one of the programmers names as being on the FBI payroll (actually, he tracked down two programmers with the same name). Both deny working with the FBI.

Hardly surprising.

follow up to this story...

We will see what the Source has to say about this!
lostngoneDec 15, 2010
How long will it take to audit the code(I know its thousands of lines of code)? If it is true the first thing we need to do is find and fix it and then blame someone.
linuxpersonDec 15, 2010
Solutions first, blame thrower later... just the way it should be.

is called inception, blah blah>..
wilhoitmDec 16, 2010
Good luck! I think unix is about 8 million lines of code.
lostngoneDec 16, 2010
@wilhoitm, did you read the article? They don't need to look at every line of code.
wilhoitmDec 16, 2010
@lostngone, sure they don't!
qwed88Dec 15, 2010
Has anyone actually found evidence of this yet?
ds420Dec 15, 2010
I would not be the least bit surprised if this was true, we have all been taking it in the "backdoor" from the government, it's agencies and the corporations.
pyroclastic_vikingDec 15, 2010
There is actually no evidence back up these claims. Here is the original email which stated this:
http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-tech&m=129236621626462&w=2
If someone knew that there was actually a backdoor, I assume that he would have some evidence to support these claims. Perhaps he would have seen the code itself? Reading the email I smell troll or perhaps some other motives http://storagezilla.typepad.com/storagezilla/2010/12/parasite.html

Oops

I just KNEW s**t like this was going down. It's obviously going to happen to a complex open source project that gives security to 'bad actors' or foreign governments.
elayoouDec 15, 2010
Would FBI buy the M$ service.
enantiodromiaDec 15, 2010
nice thing is that in OpenBSD, you can theoretically look through the questionable code and find evidence. where as in Windows, you might be breaking the law if you got your hands on actual source or decompiled the OS.
hipmanDec 16, 2010
...As if that will stop anyone.
waleedoDec 16, 2010
again, no s**t.
wilhoitmDec 16, 2010
I know you guys are hoping that this is confirmed by a WikiLeak!
spacecowb0yDec 16, 2010
It's not on snopes.com so maybe it's true?
thomasdan16Dec 21, 2010
I don't think this is possible. Sneaking out everybody's computer.
