We'll be following this. Please keep us updated.
p.s. I really like your artistic style.
norman619Feb 2, 2011
Not bad. Always nice to see the work of another shutterbug.
diggmepiggFeb 2, 2011
wow no backup?
conservative_zombieFeb 2, 2011
It's not the actual images (he apparently has his originals as anyone with a modicum of intelligence would), it's the cataloging and social networking of the collection that's been wiped out.
norman619Feb 2, 2011
So the user still has the important data (their photos) and this is a non-issue? Nice.
conservative_zombieFeb 2, 2011
Why do you deem it a non-issue? A lot of work can go into uploading, cataloging and tagging those photos. Gone also are the comments and discussions, the links created by others to the photos and the social network of contacts.
It's akin to somebody taking all the artifacts out of a museum and tossing it all in a big pile and then leveling the museum. No records, no history, no identification.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
analogassassinFeb 2, 2011
It's just the article's title is somewhat misleading. You get the impression that the photos are gone, forever. Which would be bad. This is also bad, but not as bad. Like being diagnosed with cancer, then finding out that you don't have cancer, but you have to get your appendix removed.
diggmepiggFeb 2, 2011
I'm amazed that Flickr doesn't have a backup. So many people depend on them and use them as part of their business (ie directing clients to the website to get pics). And the person in the article has just lost his search engine ranking because his images are no longer where they are supposed to be. Yea, he can re-upload his images, but he'll have to start over with no pages linking to his. One way Flickr can help him is to post his story all over the web and link to his new account.
diggmepiggFeb 2, 2011
apparently this isn't the first. time.. nor the second time according to this article.

domainstylingFeb 2, 2011
That is bad.
norman619Feb 2, 2011
No not really. The user still has his originals.
domainstylingFeb 2, 2011
That's good for him or her.
saiyanangel777Feb 2, 2011

beautylicious8Feb 2, 2011
That's Terrible - Goes to show can't trust anyone with your photos - make sure you back up!
badtripssuckFeb 2, 2011
That is what you get mister copyright complainer.
zentammFeb 2, 2011
Flickr are deleting accounts daily. Major and popular accounts that have been open for years suddenly disappear, Flickr claim they are 'creepy'. Yet they never define creepy. And they close all discussion on the topic in their forums.
I'd guess they are so busy deleting accounts, they have become very careless.
vizzmediaFeb 2, 2011
Are you legally allowed to do that to your 'customers'? I mean, can the users sue the company for sudden disruption or something?
zentammFeb 2, 2011
Flickr seem to think so, and these aren't free accounts I'm talking about, they are paid up pro accounts.
vizzmediaFeb 2, 2011
I guess, the users need to be certain about any actual losses to pursue this legally.
conservative_zombieFeb 2, 2011
It's called Terms of Service.
dyironFeb 2, 2011
LOLL.... was it accidentally? or on purpose?
norman619Feb 2, 2011
Accidentally on purpose perhaps?
dyironFeb 2, 2011
FUC* FLICKR...
conservative_zombieFeb 2, 2011
The account was deleted on purpose. Unfortunately it was the wrong account. Why they deleted the account instead of inactivating it is a mystery though.
norman619Feb 2, 2011
This is why you never keep files you want to keep in just one place. Always back up to at least 2 locations. Murphy LOVES people who only have 1 backup.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
nixonhireFeb 2, 2011
that would be fairly upsetting.
nixonhireFeb 2, 2011
that would be fairly upsetting.
norman619Feb 2, 2011
Misleading title.
FTA:
"Major, major stumble from Flickr today—a Zurich-based photoblogger says Flickr deleted his account by mistake and lost his 4,000 photos.
Mirco Wilhelm has the original files saved elsewhere, but the photos from his extensive Flickr collection had been linked to from all over the web, including the official Flickr blog. Those links will now point to deadspace. Additionally, the followers he had accumulated, tags, photo captions and copyright information have been wiped out and may not be restored. (Blogger Thomas Hawk points to the Google cache of Mr. Wilhelm's impressive collection.)"Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Closed AccountFeb 2, 2011
They accidentally his Flickr. Oh my.
frozenfabulistFeb 2, 2011
This is absurd? What possible format are they using that enables them to delete an entire account without being able to retrieve the deleted information? That seems really strange to me.
drunkenirishFeb 2, 2011
They accidentally the whole account?

That's Crazy!
kingpFeb 2, 2011
Come on Yahoo. The one property you have, that people REALLY use, and you screw up like this? I can't believe that they can't restore his account state data from a backup. Are they only doing a file-level backup each night?
Sounds like Admin Fail™ to me.
geroncoFeb 2, 2011
That's why I use Picasa
dcwizFeb 2, 2011
damn that sucks
bigbertha8Feb 2, 2011
I have a Flickr account and I feel much better about it now because there's no way that they let this happen again.
