Why doesn't facebook just ask you to confirm tags of yourself before it broadcasts them everywhere.
faasnatJan 18, 2011
Is that a rhetorical question?

genius.
mizzikeJan 18, 2011
My guess: it goes against their credo of making the world a more open and connected place. If people know they have options to prevent certain things from being public, they will choose to exercise them. If they don't realize they have those options, though, then they don't know any better and their life remains public, which forwards facebook's cause.
suganindiaJan 19, 2011
check and update settings , only you will see your tagged photos , not on your friends' feed :)
digitonicJan 19, 2011
This whole article is part of the reason I stopped using Facebook in the first place. It's atrocious that they've been around as long as they have, and they STILL haven't given people the SIMPLE option to CONFIRM or DENY a tag on a photo that somebody else tagged.

Not nearly as interesting of a place, I'd suppose sex and secrets sell. Wikileaks Why would anyone just not protect themselves?

Never said I was a nice person. Probably never will. (The number things will work in a web browser, they just DO)

I don't know what the fuss is about... Its really easy to untag yourself, and if you check your email regularly even the most embarrassing pictures of you shouldn't stay tagged for more than a dayComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
mizzikeJan 18, 2011
One day in zaphoid86's time is days.. months... maybe even years in internet time. Everything on the web is archived somewhere. A web site might be up for only a few minutes before some robot archives it--and then it's up for eternity.

Actually, that's pretty true. It'll actually be a pretty crappy thumbnail enlarged to screensize when the original can't be accessed, but, yeah. That's kinda how it works.
swilJan 18, 2011
This is sensationalist rubbish.
If you're not on Facebook, they can only 'tag' you in the sense they can say who is in a photo. It's plain text that isn't linked to you in any way. It's a slightly more directed way of having "This is a photo of Fred Bloggs!" in the caption. People can't look at a big list of photos of Fred Bloggs, they can only note that it's Fred Bloggs if they happen to look at that photo. There's nothing Facebook can do about users pointing out names of people in photos.
Saying you need to be on Facebook to prevent yourself being tagged is ridiculous.
If you are on Facebook, you can just switch off the ability for people to be able to tag you. Easy.
Facebook has definitely made some big mistakes in regard to privacy but this is crying wolf.
shaelenJan 18, 2011
Then I'm confused as to how the "face recognition" software is used. Once someone has tagged you with your name, will it then recognize your face on any other facebook post anywhere, then suggest a tag again? After reading this from the article: "More than 100 million people are tagged in photos each day the Facebook blog posted proudly in December when Facebook made photo tagging easier with facial recognition software that suggests people's name to tag in photos" it sure sounds like the picture will be recognized in the future by any other person posting pictures of someone who has already been tagged, even if the poster doesn't know that person.
shaelenJan 18, 2011
As far as the privacy issue, let's say someone was a witness to a crime then placed in a protection program and is tagged in someone else's facebook post (with the name they had before they went into a protection program) because they were tagged before the crime ever happened on someone's facebook. Maybe that person is now working in some far away state selling hotdogs and happened to be in the background of a family shot and someone thinks it is funny to tag a stranger with his name blah blah blah. Well, anybody hunting that person has a much better chance at finding them without that person ever knowing (since they will probably not have a facebook while in hiding).
That's at least one privacy concern. =)
sirjimithyJan 18, 2011
Except that if you're going into witness protection, you're probably deleting your facebook account.
swilJan 18, 2011
"Once someone has tagged you with your name, will it then recognize your face on any other facebook post anywhere, then suggest a tag again?"
Only if you ARE on Facebook, and they've tagged your Facebook profile. Facebook won't bother with facial recognition unless you're an actual Facebook user.
In which case, if you're worried about tagging, you can turn it off. Which you'd probably do if you were in a witness protection program.
It's as simple as this:
1) Facial recognition tagging only happens if you're a Facebook user
2) Facebook users can turn off being tagged in photos

It is still just a name. Nothing else. No links.

Yet another reason why I don't use Facebook.
And when I say that, I realize I sound like an old man, so I'll finish up with:
"Ya darn kids. Get off my wall!"

What a stupid thing to say since this article talks about why it is worse for people who DON'T have a Facebook account. (Not that this article is intelligent...but you picked the wrong article to make this statement.)Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

But, Mister, my balls up there!

Oh please...I can post a person NAME on hte internet any number of ways. And if someone doesn't have a Facebook account, that is all a tag is. A blank name on a screen. And even with all the bulls**t being spread abou how so many people are losing jobs over Facebook, it simply is not true. It is VERY rare, and no just from harmless drinking on a Friday night shots. And certainly not from arandomly tagged photo of someone whoo doesn't even have a Facebook account.
And here is a good rule of thumb..don't be stupid like Miley Cyrus. If you are doing something questionable, or ilelgal....anything that could cost you a job...don't let anyone take pictures of you at all!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Facebook is really very popular today. This is the time of Facebook.
frozenfabulistJan 18, 2011
Yet again, don't post anything on Facebook that you don't want the whole world to see.
bdjcJan 18, 2011
My wife and I are both on Facebook, but we made a choice before we had children that we would not broadcast every (or any) detail (including photos) to the world. We told our friends and family, and initially we had to remove wall posts and other details we did not want shared. We've asked for pictures to be removed and most people comply. Our thoughts are it's not our life we're broadcasting about. In 20 years when all this information is indexed in a search engine somewhere, those details will still be private. It is their choice to release this information so hopefully we'll give them the tools they need to do it responsibly.

Google can't archive Facebook. That is one of the things they complain about. Google seems to think they are entitled to everything.
lvaneedeJan 19, 2011
lol, facebook. I will never join that website.

Good lord people. Just stop putting all your personal information (like your home address and phone number) on FREAKING FACEBOOK.
