Why wouldn't they?

To avoid being prosecuted for espionage.

If your computer willing (without any force) uploaded a document from your computer to another, it's not hacking.

DirectConnect was a gold mine... Morons sharing their whole C:\ Drive

Peer to peer blocking of internet was secretly done by Comcast and exposed to the FCC. That resulted in a scolding by the agency and a promise they would never do it again.. Result: about two years later after the Supreme Court grants power to corporations to enable them to influence voting with unlimited money, direct donations possibly accepted, the FCC OKs the merger of Comcast with NBC creating a monster.. The Supreme Court was responsible for installing the right wing government that took power in 2001. The Supreme Court was present when derivative trading expanded the gambling power of wall street into the hundreds of trillions of dollar chip playing ranks of multinationals.. So let's say a group wants to expose what's happening and do so because the planet is in peril, wars have been started based on lies and the almost entire wealth of the United States has been silently divested to foreign entities and a secretive underworld. Let's say the atmosphere is in jeopardy of jumping to a higher set state of temperatures and component make up that is not capable of sustaining life.. The world owes WikiLeaks a debt of gratitude for finally giving some hope of exposure of abuses of power that have ramped up the chances the World is not going to be able to continue providing an atmosphere for life.. I'd like to see the US government under a magnifying glass and have access to what's been going on and I think the world would too.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

FTA: "... it would not be the first time that WikiLeaks published documents that were obtained through hacking or online surveillance."
Just how is using P2P networks "hacking"?
redlteutJan 20, 2011
Here is how: The Man considers any activity that leads to personal advantages illegal. Schools have had similar policies for their networks for ages. Taken to extremes, the DMCA might even consider rot13 to be an effective encryption method, illegal to circumvent.
triple110Jan 21, 2011
Umm...no. Encryption methods are not a "personal advantage". "The Man", i.e. justice department, only cares if said encryption prevents them from analyzing data to be used in a case. Someone with their data protected with encryption must allow access, under current law and case rulings, to that data upon request during an investigation or risk being charged with obstruction of justice. With that said, it can be argued that "forcing" someone to give access to law enforcement of that information could be a violation of the Fifth Amendment (self incrimination).

It's not hacking, nor is it "online surveillance". What's funny is the methods that Tiversa uses to "investigate" P2P activity is exactly what they are accusing Wikileaks of. Robert Boback is manipulating terminology so the less informed and FBI have an excuse to investigate. It would be like accusing someone who found a dollar in the street of stealing.
I think people should be more upset that the FBI has authorized Tiversa (a private company with no oversight) the ability perform the same activities they are accusing Wikileaks of. They are trying to associate data mining with hacking. If you have ever done a Google search to find a specific file type or name, then you would be doing what Tiversa and the FBI are considering "hacking".

My first thought was this would hurt their credibility...but not really. Didn't realize they'd done it before.
christopherfranJan 21, 2011
hmmm, this is an interesting idea, why would they even be on p2p to begin with.

Move along. Next thing these MENSA candidates will tell us is the sky is blue, water is wet, and fire is hot.
I smell politics behind this.
