The Iranian connection seems forced.

How so?
If you're able to falsify SSL certs, it would give you the opportunity to steal a whole lot of money (such as creating a fake banking site). So it seems curious to me that they only used them to go after email traffic. That coupled with the ability to control DNS servers (which a government has) would make this an especially powerful hack. While Iranian IP addresses were used, that isn't really a smoking gun, but it certainly points the finger at them. Especially since they clearly have motive to do something like that.

The claim is that they traced the attack back to Iran, and are unable to trace it any farther. It is possible that some other entity is going through Iran because the animosity between Iran and the U.S. provides cover.
I was trying to argue against your statement that it seems forced. Here are the facts I wanted to highlight. 1. The attack was sophisticated. 2. Keys that would help them spoof email was stolen. 3. Iran feels threatened by people communicating over the Internet.
But maybe it is forced. Iran is the most likely suspect among a great number of suspects. Because by highlighting very similar facts you could implicate other governments like China, Russia, and other governments, and maybe non-governmental entities.
