Well, I suppose you can, but not in polite company.

actually, if you were a corner store owner in my old neighborhood, you probably did eat cats; pieces of chicken had inch-long hairs on them. the O.G.'s said that happened if you didn't burn them off. but i'm sure i flossed some cat loin out of me teeth a few times.
anyway; you go, girl! my diggette! applegate farms the bacon queen is your michael jackson status endorser.

Amy gave a nice overview of her and digg as it is currently. Amy, if you are reading this, do you think digg has the mammary glands to get their s**t together and get some of their mojo back?
amyvernonJul 6, 2011
I think Digg's biggest problem is a lack of mammary glands.

amyvernonJul 6, 2011
OK, in fairness, I will actually answer: Can Digg get its act together? Bring back a community like we actually have here in these comments. I used to LOVE going through comment threads on Digg. They were so lively and funny and infuriating. Now very few stories actually get a decent number of comments, and that's sad. Somehow encourage more commenting and you can begin to rebuild the community. Is the clock ticking? Yep. It's almost high noon.

bigtime2Jul 6, 2011
Why doesn't he come back to Digg? A lot has changed since v4 was released.
amyvernonJul 6, 2011
I'm not sure. We haven't talked about it in a while. I think he's simply moved onto other things. He works as a film editor and Digg was always just a hobby for him. When it got all frakked up and a nightmare, it just ceased being enjoyable.
fattonydamicoJul 6, 2011

I've seen the best and worst of Digg and there's no doubt we're in a low...
but i don't mind being part of the clean-up crew
we should use this opportunity to start engaging with each other and building a SUBSTANTIAL web experience rather than just a ripoff of reddit or a hub for spammers
that said... BACON?? seriously?
I guess i should've thought up a schtick back in '07...
maybe .. waffles?... :-/
amyvernonJul 6, 2011
Waffles are the bacon of flour-based breakfast foods. Or pancakes. Hard to choose between them.
I completely agree with you about engaging with each other. The thing I like most about this submission, honestly, is that some people here are actually talking about Digg. Can we help rescue it? I'd like to think so.
avianeddyJul 6, 2011
very true... there IS a conversation rolling here, like in the good ol' days
So yeah we can still rescue it!
And we can start by cleaning all the debris

omg, the other day, I downvoted and reported so many spam comments like that that I actually got a broken axle message and couldn't digg or comment for a while. True story.
user500Jul 6, 2011
same here. I wonder why digg cant spend an afternoon coming up with an algorithm to stop or remove spam. There usually new accounts with no diggs no buries and hundreds of comments. Usually when I comment out particularly from spam I then go to another site and don't come back for a few days.

Hate to end the circle jerk, but bacon pictures are just the kind of useless bulls**t that makes Digg suck now. I know many of the users here on Digg have all day to wade through inane lolcats pictures and imgur submissions jacked from Reddit, but it's shifting the tone of this site, and reducing the level of discourse.
Hey Amy, if you really want to do good by the community, try submitting worthwhile posts instead of putting up some random bacon shots and gaming your numbers. As a former newspaper editor, I would hope that actual stories and not bacon pictures (!?) would be a more compelling reason to post. God knows Digg needs all the help it can get at the moment, regardless of fluff pieces from Forbes magazine that miss the entire point of Digg.
This story has gotten more Diggs that anything I've seen on the FP in the last month. 243 at the moment, which is sad when compared to pre-V4 numbers, as all the old timers know. Let's all work to bring the community towards better information and a real discussion of interesting and pertinent facts about the events currently shaping our world.
I may be buried by the Bacon Brigade, but Digg needs real information to survive.
amyvernonJul 6, 2011
That bacon photo was several years ago (2008, I believe, but it may have been 2009). If you look at most of the stuff I submit, it's actual news stories, with some whimsical things mixed in. I've had more than 1,000 submissions hit the front page. If you had actually looked at my submissions, you'd know that. Given that I've had an account since 2007, I'd be considered an "old-timer" by most.
And, yes, as I point out in the story, V4 has been a complete disaster, and site needs to bring the community back.

Props to you, Ms. Vernon. It was the article that led to my comment - nothing personal. I do consider you an old-timer - like me. This username is just the latest - I've been around since KooAidGuy's time.
Digg has taken some interesting turns over the years - I'm just frustrated by all the spam in the comments, the new partisan spirit dominating political discussion, and the posts of mildly funny (mildly annoying) images.
I'm still hoping that things turn around here. Keep up the good fight.
amyvernonJul 7, 2011
Fair 'nuff, and I understand the frustration. I'm glad to see other old-timers here, frankly. Gives me hope that we can save the old girl yet. :) I don't really know, however, that the partisan spirit dominating political discussion is all that new. :)
amyvernonJul 6, 2011
Also (sorry, editing timed out, so I had to add a new comment) - there are six other things in the "Top in All Topics" sidebar that have more diggs than this, and there regularly are. While this story does have a lot of diggs, that's mostly because I know a ton of users here, having been around so long, but it's nowhere near being one of the most-dugg stories on the front page of late. Yet. ;)

"While this story does have a lot of diggs, that's mostly because I know a ton of users here.."
Okay, I'm relatively new and admittedly don't know what I'm talking about. But isn't that the point? Should stories be "dugg" just because you know someone? Shouldn't a "digg" be predicated on quality or lack thereof??
amyvernonJul 6, 2011
Absolutely. But because I've been on the site so long, I've gotten to know a lot of people here. So because the article was about me, it attracted more attention. That's all I meant. Hopefully it was worth it. :)
Honestly, I'm kind of surprised it's gotten so many diggs.

aka "I helped kill Digg as a Power User AND early V4 adopter and am now here ON DIGG asking for you to praise me for my efforts"
Throw Kevin under the bus ... you *miss* MBM (?) ... "need the community back" ... bacon ..lolcats ....
For the past year or so I have tried to figure out exactly HOW Digg could kill the golden goose so effectively - I believe you have provided some big pieces to the puzzle.
amyvernonJul 6, 2011
I wasn't going to respond at first, but I thought about it and felt you had a perfectly valid viewpoint and deserved a reply.
1) I certainly don't feel that I helped "kill Digg as a Power User" - but different people have different feelings about "power users" and I'm not going to debate that.
2) I hated V4 the second it was introduced into beta. I provided feedback (as you're supposed to do when something is in beta), along with many, many, many users - power users and not. Digg completely ignored every piece of feedback and launched it anyway. I have been a vocal detractor of V4 from day one.
3) I did not submit this to Digg and didn't even know it had been submitted (yes, by a friend of mine, someone I met originally through Digg but know in real life - I've even been to her house) until it had a bunch of Diggs. I didn't think it would hit the FP, either, because pieces like this usually do not. I don't ask anyone for praise. Plenty of people don't like me, and they're more than entitled to that opinion/point of view/feeling/whatever you want to call it. The world would be freakin' boring if we all liked each other. I'm a New Yorker. I can handle it.
4) Kevin Rose created and built a great site. Then he checked out, the site declined and declined and then he presided over a DISASTROUS relaunch. V4 was his baby, which - to me, anyway - shows how out of touch he was with the Digg community by that point. That's my opinion, I've stated it before and I stand by it.
5) I miss MBM (MrBabyMan) because he submitted awesome stuff. Plus he's a really nice guy.
6) If Digg is to survive, it needs to bring the community back. I've heard more from "regular" users of Digg than "power" users how much they hate V4 and they're the ones V4 really drove away. Without the community, Digg cannot survive. I will stay here until the end, because I can be sentimental that way.
7) Yes, bacon and lolcats. They're popular on the internet, I hear.
8) Digg killed the golden goose so effectively because a decision was made to have publishers build their own communities here on Digg and become their own submitters. The problem with that is that publishers had no desire to build communities here, nor to curate what was being submitted. That, plain and simple, is how they killed it. Why did Digg decide to do this? You'd have to ask Kevin Rose.
aetherboyJul 6, 2011
Amy, I hope you're still responding because this is a very valid discussion to be had.
One question I had for you though is, what is your thought on infographic spam? Specifically, sites that post infographics to what appears to be a very coordinated network of diggers, bloggers, etc to build backlinks for what largely appears to be affiliate sites *cough* all the MBA and educational lead-gen sites *cough*. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about and have probably read the expose on Reddit about this as well.
Further, it appears you might be involved as you have submitted a FP story here that linked to a (barely) article from Jolie O'dell (a frequent offender of infographic spam blog posts to affiliate sites) which appears to be promoting InboxQ (granted, not an affiliate). There also seems to be a tie-in with ColumnFive Media behind this and I am assuming you have some relationship with them as well. Digg is borking on me or I'd find other examples in your submission history
Submission in question is:
http://digg.com/news/technology/too_lazy_for_google_try_asking_twitter_s_lazyweb_infographic
You also appear to have connections to Jesse who wrote this article about you and it is no secret that he is heavily involved in the infographic spam space.
I would really be interested to hear your side of it as to be honest, from everything I've seen the evidence is pretty damning. There also appears to be ties to some company that was posting all the .org lead-gen spam infographics. Consumer Media Group or something like that.
amyvernonJul 6, 2011
Hi aetherboy -
Thanks for your question and I know the general topic has been of interest to a lot of people for some time - especially since that Reddit post you reference (and which I did, yes, read with great interest).
First, I just want to address the issue of infographics as a genre - having worked in newspapers for two decades, I was quite familiar with infographics and their "viral" ability, inasmuch as anything could be viral in print. So they're nothing new at all (and our in-print infographics were, really, just modern versions of cave wall drawings, I suppose).
So, when I first started seeing IGs (so I don't have to keep typing "infographics") on Digg, I loved 'em. I thought it was great to see a different kind of "article" (trivia: At the Gannett Corp. in newspapers, they were called "charticles" - yes, that word did make me want to throw up). There was a lot of real quality stuff.
I just started really getting off-track, so from here I'm going to just try to address each of your points as I'm able:
• There's a lot of crap IGs out there. A lot. Just like there's a lot of crap articles and photos and illustrations and videos. Is a lot of it affiliate link spam? No doubt. Just like lots of blogs, articles, etc. are affiliate link spam. But to label any and all IGs as "infographic spam" is unfair, I feel.
• I did submit that post and absolutely have submitted other IGs over the past few years. Do I regularly submit IGs? No. Have I ever submitted an IG relating to affiliate sites? Honestly, I am not sure. I don't think so, but my memory isn't good enough to answer that definitively.
• I know and am friends with Jolie and have submitted other articles of hers to Digg in the past, though I think I did more when she was still at RWW, as I was more active on Digg then. Why did I submit it? Because even though I've never used the #lazyweb hashtag, I could totally relate to the subject of that IG, as I've asked tons of questions on Twitter that I could have found the answer to in other ways.
• I know the Column Five guys well. In fact, there's a story about the craps tables in Vegas from a couple years ago that's pretty good — if you ever get a chance to talk to Jason Lankow, ask him about it. They're standup guys and do some great work. They have done stuff for Good, Gist, Namesake, Mint and lots of others - hardly "spam" sites. Have I ever submitted their work before? I'm sure I have.
• I also am friends with Jesse Thomas and Leslie Bradshaw as well - the co-founders of Jess3. I also would not call the work they do "infographic spam." They've worked with NASA, Foursquare and Samsung, among others. I've definitely submitted some of their content to Digg in the past, too.
• I also know folks at Consumer Media Network (I believe that's who you're referring to in the last paragraph?). In fact, their CEO, Muhammad Saleem, used to be pretty active here on Digg. And I know him in real life (see the craps table reference above) and have hung out with him many times. I'm not sure if I've ever submitted any of their IGs, though it's possible. I definitely have tweeted links to some of their IGs. I pay attention to the work my friends are doing and when I like something, I try to support them.
In terms of the overall controversy over IGs, this too shall pass. I remember when the thing that got Diggers in a lather was slideshows. (Which, to be honest, I'm not particularly fond of myself and have told many a publisher to drop.) And top 10 lists. (Which I have a love-hate relationship with. They're so overdone, but so help me if I don't get sucked into reading them if they're on a topic I like.)
I have a feeling that almost any response I make is not going to satisfy you, but I do appreciate your polite manner and I know this is a topic that's been raised before and will be raised again, I'm sure. I hope I at least answered your questions on the matter; I definitely tried.
tl;dr: Some infographics are crap. Some are good or even excellent. I know folks at all those companies mentioned and consider them personal friends. Have I ever submitted an IG? Yep. Will I again? Most likely. Do I regularly? Nope. Also: I'm good at craps.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I was about to sign off for a bit to eat dinner (it's 8 p.m. here on the east coast now) before I saw this comment and stopped to respond.

Ah, how could I have forgotten to mention Greg Voakes' connection to this through the various sites he is connected with (including Business Insider, a popular front page affiliate infographic site promoter).
Amy, I appreciate your thorough responses, and agree with you on some points. However I think your connection with Consumer Media Network here is worth exploring further (thanks for confirming their name BTW--I believe they actually work near my old office on Michigan Ave.).
If you have ever posted their infographics, you have likely contributed to affiliate spam, and these guys are perhaps the biggest culprits. There is a great article breaking down a handful of their properties and strategy here:
http://www.domainsuperstar.com/consumer-media-network-smart-category-killer-org-domain-strategy
While they have not attempted to monetize all of their domains yet, it does appear they have slapped a giant CPA offer on the top of medicalinsurance.org which is one of the ones I saw popping up a lot a while back in Digg infographic submissions.
How do you call that anything but affiliate infographic spam?
Don't get me wrong--I'm all for making money online and am an affiliate marketer myself. However these sites don't really add any value--they are just a clever content farming strategy that will potentially evade Google's Panda update since I don't believe it is able to catch infographics yet (although I know CMN had to change their backlink strategy to their domain name and not just the general keywords).
Do you acknowledge the general strategy of CMN? I can't help but think there is some sort of "collaboration" (likely for financial compensation in some way) between all of these players I've mentioned (you, Greg, Column Five, CMN, Jesse, Jolie etc.) to try to go after top organic positions for some of the most competitive affiliate markets and keywords and then monetize the hell out of it.
Perhaps that is a bit of a conspiracy theory, but all the pieces fit together a little too neatly here and I think Occam's Razor definitely applies.
mrcapoJul 7, 2011
Appreciate the reply and insight
1 - Nothing to debate - the Power Users were the issue before V4 was the issue. MBM and others had it gamed so badly that Digg had to respond - you were here and surely you recall how many dupes and MBM FP subs and the bury brigades etc
2- I would like to recant / apologize then as we are in the same camp - I guess 'power' user didn't have a whole lot of 'power' in the end after all - my poor assumption.
3 - I have no idea who you are virtually or physically. I suppose I would be in every comment basking in the fame had I been in Forbes.
4 - This is the only issue I have with your reply - in the article you state 'Kevin had checked out a long time ago' before the leadership change - but V4 was his baby? Not sure how he could have checked out AND been soley responsible for the disaster that was V4.
5 - MBM ... again .. power users were the issue before v4 was the issue. He had the system gamed and I believe anyone who is even remotely aware of MBM knows this. He might be a great guy.
6 - I get that. The problem is you offer zero suggestions, solutions, changes - nothing. Just a blanket statement that anyone who understands this is a social site that relies on the community already knows. I also believe that you know, as well as I do, that this site is basically just a bot spam / *Chan / Troll partisanary repository now. Nobody is here. Maybe a couple thousand of us .. tops .. it's a graveyard that will never return. Did MySpace make a triumphant return? Bebo? Its over for Digg. Those of us that do stay are only here watching the corpse rot out of morbid curiosity. This is the first discussion I have had on Digg in like 2 years. I miss the old site. I am nostalgic for it.
7 - Another problem I have - while sophomoric and mildly amusing at best, popularity not withstanding, the dumb down of this site and the absolute garbage that pollutes this site now (and post lolbacon boom in general) changed the atmosphere and general tone. You have to bear some responsibility for this no? I mean this was originally a more democratic /. site - you know stuff for nerds. stuff that matters. It quickly turned into stuff for tweens. stuff that is irrelevant. The fact that power users could get this crap pushed is almost as bad as the TotalProPennyStocks stuff that constantly jams up the FP now.
8 - It's Kevin's fault again.
Anyway - Digg felt like Digg again for 10 minutes - so I guess I do owe you a thanks for that.
amyvernonJul 7, 2011
We can definitely agree on that last point - I had more fun on Digg yesterday, having conversations (conversations like this, frankly) than I have in a long time. So thanks for your comments, too. :) I do miss this. Don't be a stranger.
Just one point, to clarify on #4 - He did check out a long time ago. But he got involved again, in the V4 remake. By "check out," I simply mean he really paid no attention whatsoever to the site. He was CEO for the relaunch and was more involved than he'd been in years before, during and after the relaunch.
But, like I said, he created/built the site, and it was once awesome. The initial decline (in the year or two before V4) happened, pretty much, because he'd checked out, IMHO.

Being a digg addict, I loved it. I wish you so much luck on your
endeavors but, you won't need it - you're a pro.
...Not that I'm trying to be too friendly. You're too purty, we can't
be friends. (I joke)

So I guess this "Post Comment" button means they have fixed one of your major sore spots with Digg v4?

So... worked for a dying paper, and now working on a dying website.

I come here still because it's where I first got into social media/bookmarking/networking/sharing. I will come here until the site is gone. I don't spend the kind of time here I once did, however. There are some great folks working at Digg now, and I'd love to see them bring it back from the brink and I will do my best to help them until it can't be helped.

Just a newbie and still a bit shy about posting, but what I like about Digg is that it is like a favorite place from a much loved book written by Spider Robinson, "Callahan's Crosstime Saloon" where any pun is well appreciated and where people from many worlds come together... where shared joy is doubled and shared pain is halved.
