i would love to see a $300, $400 and $500 system build as well, tested running Ubuntu and tested with Windows7 as well, it would be sweet to see a few options for the best computer for your money.
So this computer with a $150 graphics card + 3gigs[~$100 of budget Ram] more of Ram and adding another $50 into the Processor budget would actually be a decent low end rig for around ~$500 and would run fairly smoothly

These articles are so stupid. You can build your own couch for much less money too. Same with a table, lamp or even a car. Most people have no desire to learn how to build a computer. It doesn't make people who build their own any smarter than those who pay to have one built for them.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

well you know this was an article in pcmag which probably means the readers would like doing things like building their own pcs. It might not be the best thing for everyone but for the group this article is targeted at this is very interesting article.

What the f**k? Just because someone reads PC Magazine does not mean they want to build their own. Most people who are into computers have ZERO desire to build their own.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
akumuOct 17, 2010
PS: he didnt say they absolutely would be interested in building their own PCs, he simply suggested that someone reading PC magazine may be interested in building a computer! what a concept!!!
xerathOct 17, 2010
If you don't like it don't read it.
talonhOct 17, 2010
Hey look it's regulatorguy whining and moaning again. Stop with the crying already, it's old. Just like your trolls.
ddarko789Oct 17, 2010
"Most people who are into computers have ZERO desire to build their own." I can use a counter-argument based on my friends and myself. We read PC magazine and build our own computers. There goes your lousy assumption buddy.
akumuOct 17, 2010
Thank you. I read PC magazine only to check out different pc builds, nothing else. I have only built one PC but i find it very interesting and yes I learned alot from doing so! if everyone else has no interest in the stupid articles then dont read them!
neodreamerOct 17, 2010
The author forgot that there's diminishing returns not only when you go too expensive, but also when you go too cheap. I could have gotten double the RAM and HDD by spending 10% more.
hardeep1singhOct 17, 2010
Am I missing something or did the author forget to add the price of a monitor, keyboard and mouse to the system?
ddarko789Oct 17, 2010
"We knew we wanted to aim low, almost ridiculously low—so we decided on what seemed like almost an unthinkable total: $200, which would include everything needed for the base computer itself ([BUT NOT COUNTING THE MONITOR, KEYBOARD, AND MOUSE] or tax and shipping charges)." Read the article first buddy.
the4thaggieOct 17, 2010
Changing your monitor, keyboard and mouse out everytime you get a new computer is not necessary. This is assumed for people strapped for cash, not those who expect these things from a Walmart bundle.
newmanium2001Oct 17, 2010
Look, I am a Nix admin and I can probably shell script my way out of a black hole, but I would never recommend that a novice use Linux as a desktop. Seriously, spring the $50 and get an OS that will support the countless programs or hardware that is probably required by your job.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
fartagOct 17, 2010
Seriously, how about _don't_ spend $50+ to support a company that actively tries to destroy Linux. Plus this article is about building a $200 Linux PC yet you still managed to cram a damned ad for Windows in there for some reason.
judgedreddOct 17, 2010
Someone did not read the article. The experiment was to build a cheap-ass computer that will handle routine tasks such as e-mail, web surfing and file manipulation. Several times they used the phrase, "second or third computer." My parents who are in their late 60's run Ubuntu on both of their computers and have zero complaints. Some Linux distros are stupid easy to use. If my parents can do it anyone can. As a bonus they no longer constantly call me up when their computers get bogged down with malware (I suspected my father of going to questionable porn sites, but he always blamed my mother). For this reason I would say distros such as Ubuntu are more user friendly than Windows (which I also like and use). My father no longer works, but my mother does. So far she has not had any complaints using OpenOffice to work on files for work. I did warn her that converting to and from MS formats can cause issues, but either she fixed the errors or did not encounter them. I DO have her dual booting XP though because the corporation she works for has a website that is IE only. As far as I know the only time they use Windows is for my mother to check the site for her work assignment.
bulliumOct 17, 2010
Save your mum from having to dual boot. You CAN run IE in Ubuntu without virtualization. Ubuntu Geek explains here http://www.ubuntugeek.com/running-internet-explorer-in-ubuntu-linux.html
the4thaggieOct 17, 2010
There may be other dependencies that have to tie into IE for the website. Case and point, Java. Several (poorly designed but heavily used) packages use Java and IE. Unless you have a virtualized XP in Ubuntu, you aren't going to be able to use IE for some sites that require IE.
dklaOct 17, 2010
Of course, you could probably pick up a better used computer on Craigslist....
