The only reason I used IE was to download Firefox. You can't go wrong with either firefox or chrome.
yurmutha412Mar 26, 2011
IE is definitely getting better, at least they aren't holding everything back anymore as far as html5. I think they're still against webgl and they'll probably try to screw that up. The thing they didn't test here was security where they generally fail pretty badly. Chrome still uses the sandbox system which is a lot safer.

I used to use Opera. Blazing fast.
Then I switched to IE because my stupid school website required it.
That gave me rendering errors, so I had to switch to Firefox.
And I'm considering switching to Chrome, now that is has good support.
Finally, by looking at these benchmarks, it appears that the browsers are all getting good, and are now very similar. Even IE.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Firefox ftw!

buried no Opera!

"Opera and Safari were not tested because they have not been updated recently, and neither has yet implemented hardware acceleration close to the level that the other three browsers have."
taterguyMar 26, 2011
Chrome is the best!
bdbrMar 26, 2011
Chrome actually looks pretty bad by these benchmarks. Maybe they'll catch up later.
mcprogrammerMar 26, 2011
Chrome 11 (in beta right now) is already significantly faster. And in some benchmarks, 10 is already the fastest.
gsydiggerMar 26, 2011
try actually using it, it's faster in the real world, except the boot up time, that's pretty crap

I'd love to upgrade to Firefox 4, but I have bad memories of how many of my add-ons broke when I upgraded to 3.
capttuMar 26, 2011
The add-on part of the firefox 4 upgrade was painless. Firefox checked my add-ons for compatibility when I upgraded and then showed me 2 lists... The first list showed which add-ons from version 3 were not compatible with version4. It then showed a list of my add-ons which had versions that worked in version 4. It then let me select from that list to download those selected all at once.

Ditto here - no problems with anything except NoScript. I couldn't find the little script blocked indicator, then I realized it moved up next to the address bar. Even better!

Completely wrong tests (well, most of them - memory usage is the only good one they have stumbled on).
Browser performance of the type tested is nowadays mostly limited by ISPs and servers at the source. We are now in realm where bottleneck is not in the browser anymore. What matters and should be tested with browsers (though very hard) is convenience of use and adaptability. Latter is hands-down clearly won by Firefox because of innumerable add-ons and plug-ins. How to test ease of use and convenience in an objective way is quite a science...Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

People are writing photo editing software in Javascript/HTML5. As applications are moving to the cloud, browser performance is still pretty important.

I love Chrome - EDI

Wow, these tests are surprising. I've always found IE to be slow, at work IE is standard but I use Chrome for specific web apps for javascript performance. Might try IE9 to see if I can just use one browser.
Also surprised at the Firefox performance, I gave up on FF about a year ago because it was too bloated and slow. Now it appears to use less memory than Chrome. Time to give it another try.
TomHanks4Mar 26, 2011
personally I haven't found a browser to be "slow" in ages, though I tend to own a fairly quick PC. benchmarks are really not a consideration in picking what browser to use, features and to some degree familiarity are the deciding factors.

I'm currently using chrome, and I've never had any problems with it. unlike IE and firefox.
waleedoMar 26, 2011
chrome always blows the rest out the water.

Firefox 4 really is a huge step forward. Nice to see that showe in numbers and not just in the user experience.
akrasnoshchokovApr 29, 2011
definitely chrome has the best performance. my choice is chrome. vote at http://coolometer.org/chrome-vs-firefox
