Doesn't surprise me much. While I'm sure he has some pretty good advisers, from what I gather, he seems very interested and up on technology and modern medias. And also as mentioned, his name getting attached to any of these companies helps out a bit.
I think that there have been some solid investments, but big wins have only come with one, maybe two, of these investments. It is a strong portfolio, but we'll never know how much is good advisers and how much is actually Ashton Kutcher. Personally, I think he has smart advisers who recognize that as an investor he bring something else to the table in addition to money, which is a good thing and doesn't detract from him. I just doubt he's sitting around making the decisions in a vacuum.
I've kept up with the front page of digg for years now, and I can only recall ever hearing about 2 of those 15 companies. I don't watch tv and thus commercials anymore, so maybe they are on television at all? I get the feeling few of them are well known.

He's not all that bad of a angel investor and he definitely helps his startups with getting PR by attaching his name
