Meh...I still want tactile feedback.
The ultimate combination of these technologies is still something like this:
http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/
Make it so the keys can be re-arranged and you have the ultimate keyboard.
johnomazzJul 28, 2011
GOD YES. I've wanted an Optimus since two years before it was released. Too bad its so damn expensive.
darkmatter911Jul 28, 2011
Very cool but $2186 is a bit steep for a keyboard.
langfordJul 28, 2011
Cool, but considering the price, I think I'll hang on to my old model M.
jimv1983Jul 29, 2011
I hated the model M keyboard. It was so damn load and the keys were to stiff.
doomesticJul 28, 2011
Why the f**k is it so expensive? I could see it being in the range of 200~300, but no where near that price point...
jimv1983Jul 29, 2011
There is something wrong with anyone who buys the Optimus keyboard. It is awesome but not for that price. It's not just expensive it's ridiculous. Give my 90% off and I MIGHT think about getting one.
larkstewJul 28, 2011
Am I missing something or isn't this basically the same as touchscreen keyboards already used on smartphones and tablets?
palmgeoJul 29, 2011
Yes I think you are right...it's a touch screen Morpheus keyboard!!
langfordJul 28, 2011
I guess touch-typing isn't even a consideration to them, considering this concept and the calculator buttons they currently put on their keyboards.
deviantdragonJul 28, 2011
It takes the worst aspect of touchscreen devices, typing for prolonged periods of time and with speed, and brings it to the desktop. Way to go.
lalongecarabineJul 28, 2011
Huh? Kinda old idea not sure they can get a patten on it. A British company made a projection keyboard that worked on hard flat surfaces. It was OK but I missed the tactile feeling of the keys.
johnomazzJul 28, 2011
Sexy isn't the first thing I think of. Retarded fits the bill more.
niftymikeJul 28, 2011
I dont know... As long as there is a setting to adjust invisible keysize for my fat stubs fingers, I might just dig(g) it.
johnomazzJul 28, 2011
When you type, think of what you are actually doing/feeling. You aren't so much pressing the exact same spot every time, but feeling the area of the key you are pressing. After so long of typing, I know when I hit the wrong key because of how it feels after I press it, not because I see a misspelling on the screen. I can type with my eyes shut and know when I mistype something.
mu5qularJul 28, 2011
Could I work if the glass had key depressions.
mu5qularJul 28, 2011
Could I work if the glass had key depressions? I agree that I want tactile, but having one solid screen would drop cost.
johnomazzJul 29, 2011
glass costs more than plastic as it would also need to be capacitive touch glass. Whats the point of mkaing glass keys vs plastic keys. plus the drawing looked to be one flat piece.
1withTHEsharkJul 28, 2011
You know what's funny. Ballmer said the same thing about the iPhone, who's laughing now on that topic?
themantogotoJul 28, 2011
One more way to make things more unnecessarily expensive, probably going to be unresponsive half the time like a touch screen to.
mikepictorJul 28, 2011
so basically....the iPad keyboard?
We already have it...I use it all the time. It's pretty good...but not as good for fast typing without looking at the keyboard. For that, I just go to my normal keyboard.
jimv1983Jul 29, 2011
Also not good for touch typing.
mikepictorJul 29, 2011
Right...I think I said that.
daddio48Jul 28, 2011
the problem is it will be hard to type without looking at the keyboard. just like it's impossible to text without looking on an iphone.
starmanjonesJul 28, 2011
there have been variations on this for a long time. i remember trying a projected keyboard. i thought it was going to be great. it sucked. i've been accused of being an apple fanboy... but... i remember the hockey puck mouse. :D
huangismJul 28, 2011
f**k this stupid idea, i wanna rest my hand on my keyboard. use the time to work on something useful
mizzyJul 28, 2011
I hope it won't hurt my fingers typing on that glass. -__-
espressodudeJul 29, 2011
I love how Apple is the forefront of technology. They revolutionize the computing technology all the time.
1withTHEsharkJul 28, 2011
There is no way Apple will make a new standardized keyboard at over 2 grand a pop. The idea is sound. As long as you are a decent typist, you don't need to feel, your muscle memory does the work for you. Think about it.

I'm sure apple will pretend they invented this even though its been done before ie optimus , just like they did with FaceTime. None the less its pretty cool.
mogwuyJul 29, 2011
Yeah this seems like a silly idea, everybody who has ever taken a keyboarding class is going to have to throw out what they learned before.
bobd1eJul 29, 2011
REVOLUTIONARY!

Awesome, when I will get 1 for me .... :-)

jimv1983Jul 29, 2011
For small amounts of text non tactile keys are fine but not for more than just a few works. Touch keyboards suck for regular typing because you cannot just rest your fingers on the keys like a regular keyboard. I'm not really surprised that Apple is doing something like this. I prefer tactile keys but not sure how much worse a keyboard can get after typing on an Apple desktop keyboard. Worst I have ever used.
stockjonesJul 29, 2011
I'm waiting for the onion reference.
bignacho69Jul 29, 2011
Yeah I was thinking the same
tac50Jul 29, 2011
Wow! I love the look of it, definitely sexy. I absolutely love the... Oh wait, we only have a sketch on how the mechanism will work and know nothing of what it will look like.
What moron would describe something they haven't seen, let alone used as "sexy"?
harrisbradleyJul 28, 2011
They've streamlined the one-button form factor.
getlimedtodayJul 28, 2011
Don't know if it could work but would love to see a test version.
filmfundsJul 28, 2011
All those Mavis Beacon session for naught. Why???? Why Mavis??
mizuhochanJul 28, 2011
If it's like the onscreen keyboard I used on the windows 7 tablet I had, but sent back for a refund, I say enjoy your wasted development costs and I hope you go out of business for even trying it.
It's so god damned awful, I can't even describe it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
LordDiggerJul 28, 2011
looks great
niftymikeJul 28, 2011
This will definitely be in their road map, it gets people more comfortable with screen panel keys (insert sales pitch for ipad +iphone).
sweetbuzzyJul 28, 2011
That's like Star Trek or something. I LOVE APPLE!
mizzyJul 28, 2011
I hope it won't hurt my fingers typing on that glass. -__-
