Multi-touch patents sound multi-douche.
I can't see how they can have any real positive outcome on users, unless those users are also patent lawyers.

If you read the actual patent, it's not remotely broad. It has to do with scrolling behavior inside the browser, inside web sites.
Bloggers and media are making it out to be a patent on all things multi-touch, when it's not.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Still, it's a UX patent meaning that they didn't really invent something, they just specified a logical behavior combined with a gesture and got paperwork to say they own it.
Specific workarounds, maybe. But there's going to come a time when simple UI techniques are going to get patented away unless someone puts their foot down and tell these companies that human gestures, basic interface, and common UX are off limits.
Our current patent office seems woefully inadequate to the task.
Also interesting to note is that knockoff companies in certain countries aren't actually going to care about stuff like this and will simply continue to put out whatever makes money (thus creating commonly used UI/UX experiences), so the long and short of it is that we're tying our own hands behind our backs while the rest of the world goes on it's merry way.

Good points, I won't argue that the patent system is a joke

another broad pattent awarded to apple. they already have so many law suite out there this will just add fuel to that fire since thats the only way they can beat the competition. bunch of cowards. something seems fishey. i wonder how apple gets the broad over reaching pattents. makes me think they are paying off the right people and i wouldnt count that out.

Yet another patent that will slow down innovation.
