Despite all the problems, there are still a lot of advantages/features on the iPhone. People obviously think it's still worth the trouble.

It comes as no surprise. Although, Android is giving Apple competition. Apple pushed the entire industry to higher standards! Look at the sales of the iPad http://www.plusultratech.com/2010/10/is-ipad-ifad.html

Android is set to surpass the iPhone quite soon actually. And there as several Android tablets on the horizon. So at least there is a choice in the marketplace between Closed and Open.
plusultratechOct 9, 2010
Choice is always good.

I'll take the walled garden any day, the Android platform is just too flaky to be taken seriously.
plusultratechOct 9, 2010
I'd very interested to hear the flakiness you speak about. Can you give any experiences?
moogOct 9, 2010
Android already has passed Apple, and RIM for that matter. (in the US)
plusultratechOct 10, 2010
This is very true. But Apple seems to be leading the way. The question is how will sales of the iPhone go once it goes over to Verizon in January?

Android is fractured. Rather than reporting on it as a whole, the different branches should be reported. How many Samsung Android phones have been sold? HTC? How about Motorola? That would be a better reflection on the market. Sure Android is open, but the carriers and handset makers are modifying the systems so they are no longer the same across platforms. There's also the issue of OS updates. How many phones sold are running the lastest OS?? Previous OS? How about the one before that? All of a sudden this Android behemoth isn't as big as it appears anymore. Apple sales should also reflect this subdivision as well. How many iPhone 4s are out there? 3Gs's? 3G's Originals? How many people are running iOS 4.1? 3.1.2?? etc...

You are completely correct in all of this. It it often up to the carriers whether a person may upgrade their phone to the latest version of Android. Apple, since it controls things better can make sure anyone can upgrade if they wish to and if their hardware can handle it. But with Android it reminds me of the mess with Windows Mobile where everyone was scrambling to see how they could get the firmware to run the latest OS OR that someone had tried and you had to do XYZ to make it happen on your model. This was my experience with Dell and they were a main stream computer company. But I think that these OS's are a vital way of the new kind of searches that may being to happen on app stores both Android and Apple, which could start to erode google searches as time and the growth of those app stores happens.

People just don't realize what a sweeping advantage Apple has having not only the iPhone but ALSO the iPad AND the iPod touch, with a consistent application message between them all..
If you had any of those devices and needed something else in another form factor the draw would be huge to be able to share applications (and data) across them.
elitetekOct 9, 2010
By the looks apple just got screwed again..
