Not only Apple IPad vs. another Tablets, maybe Apple vs. PC?
warpfieldOct 29, 2010
I wonder if schools have chalkboards or whiteboards that are large versions of the iPad... hmm...

i was thinking that a good name for such a device might be surface?
warpfieldOct 31, 2010
"Surface"? Hmm... I don't know... it's not bad, kind of catchy even, but sounds like something Microsoft would come up with.

Last Year: "Tablets won't take off, no one will buy them, and Apple will suffer a backlash from an uninterested public"
This Year: "Every consumer electronics vendor will release a tablet this year during the holiday season as they try to catch up to Apple"

"Ultimate"? As if to imply there have been so many tablet battles, that this is the "Ultimate battle"? It will be interesting to see if pad's continue to succeed, and how the whole thing goes, but I don't see this thing having anymore reason to be a battle, than laptops, phones, or as someone mentioned, simply the apple vs pc. I know there had to be more news in the skies than to pull fake tech battles out of nothing.

There are always security issues with consumer devices on corporate networks; so far Blackberry is the only one that my company certifies to that might bode well for the PlayBook.
I was on a conference call where we were waiting for a few others and the subject of tablets came up. Someone said, "I want one of those RIM jobbies". The whole group broke out laughing.

Yeah, and I guarantee you, your company's IT director is getting hammered by upper management to support iPads on the network.
I work for a large telecom company and I was the second in the office with an iPad and it's now grown to 8 since July. IT buckled and allowed it when I showed off some productivity apps during a quarterly meeting.

Surely the name Playbook implies it's RIM aiming for the consumer not the business though? We need another mobile OS like Jobs needs turtlenecks, surely.

Typically a big fan of Apple, but assuming the interface on any of those devices is decent, they will surely be better... unless Apple steps it up and fixes the basic issues with the iPad: No Camera, lack of ports, and apparently the weight.. compared to new tablets.

BURY BURY BURY BURY BURY!

How about we limit eligibility for "Ultimate Tablet Battles" to models that are actually shipping? Hmm.....
aronnycOct 30, 2010
The article forgot to mention contracts, which would be a big selling point (or aversion) for many potential consumers.

It'll be interesting to wait until the tablet concept as a whole matures as a hardware platform and software has been written from the ground up with it in mind. These are still first gen products, and first gen is always flaky, but iPads with iOS 4 and a genuine tablet edition of Android/Chrome OS could be a world away from any of these products.
