Author of this article is a ****. Every company wants your money not your love, sony is the fking leader in this field now hahaha.
If you go to the site, the guy on the right in the top photo. The author, he looks like a ugly steve jobs, i think thats the reason he doesnt like apple. He mad.

That isn't the point of hte article. They never suggeste that this is only relevant to Apple. It is that Apple fanboys are the ones more likely to think that everything they do is to HELP them.
There are people who actually think that if they were dying of thirst that Steve Jobs would band over and give them a bottle of water. When in reality, all he would bend over for would be to check if you had a good kidney or liver.

Schweppesale2May 20, 2011
it's the function of business not to acknowledge a problem with it's product?
(malware)
killersquirelMay 20, 2011
@schweppesale2 - it depends on how they decide to deal with tghe problem. Johnnysoftware made some good points on why apple is taking the correct stance on the malware issue.
Second, as a mainly OSX user (I do have windows computers too) I know not to allow the computer to run and install a program that I didn't specifically download. That is common sense. I have been a user of Macs for more than 13 years and I've never had malware or viruses on any of my macs. On the flip side, I've had numerous viruses on my windows machines over the years. Why is this, because you can get a virus on windows machine just for going to a website. I'm not knocking windows machines, this is just the way it is.
robert5150May 21, 2011
Windows also has 5000X the install base of Apple and has for more than 20 years. It was Microsoft that brought PCs to desktops that people could afford ... not Apple.
killersquirelMay 21, 2011
And what is your point? Is the windows installed user base larger than os x? Of course it is. Nobody is arguing that point.

Most businesses. I know a few small businesses who really do care about their clientele, but that's not found in major tech corporations.

ALL businesses number 1 goal is to maximize profit. Caring about their clientele is only necessary to achieve the #1 goal.
ajh16May 21, 2011
Some companies do love you, but only in so far as it will keep you doing business with them. By this, I mean some companies will bend over backwards for customers to keep them happy as long as they stay good customers, but if you aren't a good customer (ie, you cost more than they can ever hope to make from you) they will stop caring. That's a little different from the ones that actively hate you and will try to do everything they can do to screw you to get ahead.
greedonvrfiredMay 20, 2011
I keep reading stuff like this but it simply does not jive with my real life experience. I know they are my own isolated incidents but my experience is as follows. (short and sweet.) 6 yr old G5 desktop computer starts acting up. I bring it into Apple store. They call me the next day and say it needs 1200 worth of parts, but NO CHARGE because the problem was a coolant leak. (6 yrs old!, 4 years expired warranty!)
Also, I brought an iPhone in. I said "the home button feels wonky, its subtle but it doesn't have as sharp a 'click' as my last one"... New Phone without the slightest argument. I have also accompanied friends on similar visits with similar outcomes.
I walk in the store and I am immediately helped (or I make an appt.) I get nothing but polite and pleasant treatment. Same goes for customer support on the phone and on line. You guys keep telling me they hate me but they treat me sooooo well.
(and yes, I know there are cheaper faster phones that are more expandable and customizable with USB ports and removable batteries. I tried one. Didn't like it.)
amaoicanMay 20, 2011
I always laugh when people think being able to plug devices into a phone or take parts out of the phone are features. Being able to replace the battery is not a feature - it's part of the maintenance. Nobody buys a phone thinking "sweet! I can't wait to swap out the battery!"
greedonvrfiredMay 20, 2011
Well when I got a phone on which I could swap out the battery my thinking was. I will buy an extra battery so I will always have a spare with me. I always forgot it, forgot to charge it, or misplaced it. Now I have an iPhone cover with a built in battery. A no name Mophie style one for 20 bucks. And how often do I need to plug in a usb? thanks to dropbox pretty much never.
Closed AccountMay 21, 2011
Most companies would do all or at least most of that without having to go to the nearest store. Especially all the warranty things. But Apple makes you head to the nearest store, even if hundreds of miles away and way your turn or else pay for hte priviledge of warranty returns by mail.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
ariastarMay 21, 2011
You ever had a Dell break a week out of warranty and been told tough luck? I have. I dropped my iPhone 4, and Apple replaced it.
In case you don't know, it's not common for companies to replace items out of warranty, especially years out of warranty. No consumers would blame a company for not replacing something that old. Yet Apple does it.
greedonvrfiredMay 21, 2011
and my store is 10 blocks away
bosskeyMay 21, 2011
That happened to my friend too. They fixed her G5 tower for free...and it was well out of warranty. They had no legal or other obligation to do that, since we all know when the warranty's up all bets are off.
Naturally Apple created a customer for life that day...
ariastarMay 21, 2011
I'm married to an Apple guy. He was a Genius, now he's a Genius Admin. Apple people are awesome and very much like a family and are very supportive. I'm friends with several of my husband's co-workers/friends, and I adore them. He's worked at two different stores, and it's the same each time. Apple pays pretty well and has great benefits and the employees have freedom to be themselves. Of course there are complaints about management as you'll have anywhere, but still. It's great, and they really do hire phenominal people.
greedonvrfiredMay 21, 2011

evildeadashMay 21, 2011
Yeah, i'll count on *no hands* how many companies actually love it's customers. They All just want your money you f**king retard. This guy just comes off as just another anti-Apple fanboy who wants to whine how horrible Apple is... all the time.
myztryMay 20, 2011
Oh, come on. They all want your money. The interest of the shareholder is a legal requirement under Corporate law. If they're not trying to screw you then they are breaking the law....
Okay now. I have a work supplied iPhone 4. My previous Apple product was an Apple ][e that I used way back in high school, so I'm not exactly highly motivated by Apple products. I've never used a Mac(intosh) of even description.
But get real. I'm more likely to use Apple products now that I'm older and have some money behind me. I don't show at the $2 store (or whatever variety is in your area). I like the little nuisance of my iPhone like the excellent viewing area. It's surprising ability to take REALLY GOOD macro photos.
Are Apple money whores with contempt? Sure. They'd screw me over as soon as the next American based company. I would share no tears if some newcomer came along and wiped their share value to nothing. A company is only a business structure after all. An instrument towards a purpose of financial gain.
But there is no denying they simply make better products. They don't place themselves in the lowest common denominator market with the dominate personal computer software parts supplier. You pay a hefty premium to get leading edge hardware and analised software.
The idea that those with money to "waste" on Apple products are not an attractive target is just a moronic idea. Windows is full of holes that come from it's long standing legacy and requirements of backwards compatibility. Apple FAILED. They got to start-a-new.
This has clear cut benefits. They don't need to get all pathetic and name their devices things like Windows Phone 7 when the device doesn't even use Windowing - in a desperate attempt to retain brand recognition.
Apple software is more secure because they aren't dragging along 3,000 tons of legacy stemming from the 16 bit mono-tasking world. They won't let you do every obscure thing you may get a drunken whim for. They're DESIGNED for a modern paradigm with an anal attention to doing relevant things well.
Who rarely cares if Apple, Google or Microsoft fail. All empires fail and another takes it's place. But let's not bulls**t about things. f**k the shareholders.
murxMay 20, 2011
'Windows is full of holes that come from it's long standing legacy and requirements of backwards compatibility.' (et al similar arguments thereof)
Maybe some people don't want to buy their software over and over again because Apple drops the old line and produces new hardware?
Maybe someone has BIG software running millions of accounts, datasheets, transactions or are highly specialized and custom programmed for them.
Imagine - 'Oh sorry we can't make your financial transfers right now because we changed to the new iApple! Will take a while till we will be back in business...'
They (Apple) don't make a better product - they are just better at selling people the same stuff again and again - and make them belief! that they need to.
triptasticMay 20, 2011
Drops a line in what way? As far as I know, Apple will support all of it's products (ie. Producing parts, offering repairs with/without warranty) for seven. They may "drop a line" as in not produce it anymore, but that's hardly the same thing, and what company doesn't do that.

Let met toss this on the fire:
I used to work for Apple, in the retail store, as a Genius. So I may have better insight into this kBase article than Scott Raymond or Ed Bott. With that said, what the procedure basically states is that if the software has not yet been installed, then suggest the simplest means to avoid installing it and ultimately remove the malware IN IT'S UNINSTALLED STATE.
Secondly if the malware has been installed, it's more complex. If you ask your phone support team to get that deep into the weeds, and start examining files by timestamps, content, name, etc you are opening yourself and your company up to all sorts of litigation. especially if something gets deleted or altered either by mistake of the customer or errant instruction of the AppleCare agent.
So, here are a couple of scenarios to help this make sense:
ammgyrpMay 20, 2011
Customer: I got this pop-up and it is telling me I need to install Mac Defender in order to remove some viruses.
AppleCare Agent: OK, is it asking for your password now, or did it at some point?
C: Yes, it’s asking me for the password, should I put type it in?
A: No, I’d suggest not typing it in, and clicking cancel instead. Also, if you would like, I can help you remove the program that created the popup—
C: OK
*walks customer through trojan installer file removal*
A:Thank you for your time, please remember to take care of yourself on the internet and be mindful of the things you download and install.
ammgyrpMay 20, 2011
Customer: I got this pop-up and it is telling me I need to install Mac Defender in order to remove some viruses.
AppleCare Agent: OK, is it asking for your password now, or did it at some point?
C: Yes, so I put it in and installed the program and now everything is acting strange.
A: I’m sorry to hear that, do you have any anti-virus or anti-spyware programs installed?
C: Nope:
A: Let me suggest you get one. I’m not sure if you have been infected with malware or not, and I can’t speculate on it; but a virus scan just to be on the safe side wouldn’t hurt.
C: Ok… I thought macs never got viruses
A: Macs are less susceptible to getting viruses because you have to put in your password to allow any program permission to make system wide changes. However if you put in your password for an unknown/untrusted program; it’s hard to say for sure what if anything has happened.
C: What if I am infected?
A: a virus scan can usually detect and eliminate malware/spyware threats in a way that is safe for your system and your files. We wouldn’t want to go mucking about in your snow leopard’s innards.
C: I see….
A:Thank you for your time, please remember to take care of yourself on the internet and be mindful of the things you download and install.
mstrdiggMay 21, 2011
Apple is one step away from having to perform OS reloads over the phone, and that will reduce profits. The first big virus that hits will do it.
They won't be able to just say "Get a AV program and run it" at that point. Customers will notice that they're issues aren't being resolved by support after the call otherwise. It will drive people away, and Apple can't have that.
ammgyrpMay 21, 2011
Apple already does OS reloads over the phone. Truth be told it is almost the "first line" of defense in the AppleCare "Software Repair" handbook. Apple sees Software Repair and Hardware Repair is two very different things, so much so that officially they offer 'no' support of the software beyond reinstalls (either Archive and Install (preserving Userdata) or Erase and Install (fresh install)... Hardware though... they'll bend over backwards to help you with that if it hasn't been damaged/broken by water/gravity/bullets/violence...

neondistractionMay 21, 2011
You're free to dismiss his opinions if you wish, but it is a fact that apple explicitly told it's tech support staff not to acknowledge the existence of the malware and/or to assist them in it's removal.

I have never been wronged by ANY companiy. I bought a Dell 10 years ago and after warranty had a part break...they sent me a new one, no questions asked. And they SENT me the new one. I didn't have to drive 200 miles to the nearest Dell store, wait online for 2 hours, and the drive back.
Then when I bought an HP, I had a minor problem with the multi-card reader. They told me that even though it could probably be fixed, since I knew how to replace it, it would be better just to send me a new one, but that I should keep the old one since it was likely still fine with a little bit of work. Again, free shipping, not pautting me out in the slightest.

Google doesn't love you, they just want your data ... which they can sell to make money.
skribbleMay 20, 2011
Article begins... "It should come as no surprise by now that I am not a huge fan of Apple..."
Sounds like the Troll is standing on the bridge instead of hiding under it.
Seems that the advice Apple is giving re: MacDefender is valid (though they are seemingly controlling the message): if you haven't installed it, don't. If you have, get some security software to remove it. Sound reasonable.
Microsoft provides support for security but the resulting conversation ends up in a similar fashion... download their security software and see how that works or use a third party...
BTW no anti-virus software will prevent a Trojan when a user clicks a button and enters their password. And no company will freely provide support once you screw up your computer. (Though I assume Apple is working on a solution for this... this is there MO, they never acknowledge a problem until they have a solution, but if there's a problem they are working on it.)
lemonfireMay 20, 2011
This is the second story on digg today about the same thing. The solution is simple, back up your files regularly and if your machine has been infected reinstall OS X (or your preferred OS).
Apple support engineers just can't spend a lot of time trying to fix other peoples computers if they've been infected by some unknown malware. If you suggest a change to a customer and it doesn't work, guess what, you just made sure that you now own the problem. I'd love for Apple to support problems like this but I understand that Apple is about making money just like any other business. I've tried to get extended help from e.g. Microsoft in the past, big surprise they behave exactly the same way as Apple.
No anti-virus software will necessarily always remove malware. Btw. I suggest the exact same process for Windows and Linux users. I'm not saying that anti-virus software is bad, or that software firewalls are no good. These are great tools to let you know that your machine has been affected by something nasty. I'm just making the argument that these solutions are not enough to keep your computer safe.

themantogotoMay 20, 2011
Every company is like that for the most part just some don't seem to apply that to Apple cause their special somehow like that. There was a article in wired a year or so ago on just that point, it is just as evil as everyone else.
mdmcgeeMay 21, 2011
How is it evil to refuse to take responsibility for the actions of the individual. This particular attack vector cannot be avoided without dramatically limiting the functionality (aka ipad, iphone, ipod). It's not an OS issue.
Here have some unix "malware", use it to wipe out your homedir then pass it along to friends.
#!/bin/ksh
echo removing all files as $(sudo id|awk '{print $1}'|sed -e 's/^.*(//' -e 's/).*$//')
sudo rm -rvf ~/
Now, if you are stupid enough to run this why should apple waste their time telling you how to fix it? That isn't evil on their part it's stupid on the users part. Now, if I could remotely run this on your box without an account or through your web browser without your knowledge, then you would have a point. There is plenty of that on windows platforms but none that I am currently aware of on the mac/unix side.

Apple needs to help remove the malware, MACdefender, issue to keep its shiny "we dont have virus issues like PC users." OR they stand to loss that illusion that MAC users have clung to for years. What do you think guys/gals??
buddhistmonkeyMay 21, 2011
((( "we dont have virus issues like PC users." )))
MacDefender isn't a virus, it's a Trojan horse that requires a manual installation and an admin password to run. I'm pretty sure that most Mac users aren't clinging to the illusion that Apple is going to protect them from software that they themselves download, install, and authorize. And of course, the irony is that the more a Mac user does believe that they're immune from malware, the less likely they are to download and install software like MacDefender, which purports to be an anti-virus program.
jimmyemunozMay 21, 2011
I am completely aware that MacDefender is not a virus. I wrote previous to my quoting of what you hear so many misinformed Mac users say regarding viruses, that MacDefender was malware. Malware and trojan horse are synonymous, correct sir? I did enjoy reading your viewpoint on the possibility of Mac users feeling their systems software is so bulletproof that essentially they have no need for Anti-Virus software which of course is a facade. Apparently and hopefully, some of the Mac users, although tricked, did install the MacDefender software (Trojan Horse), because they understood, and this is the sad part, a need for Anti-Virus software in the moment. In other words they should never needed to install MacDefender because their favorite Anti-Virus suite would have been installed from the moment the Mac entered the internet. There is quite a bit more I could say but I got a little of my viewpoint out there. Thanks for commenting buddhistmonkey =D
metalliheadMay 20, 2011
I think the only thing about this blog that hits me is the part where Apple is intentionally ignoring a problem and not helping its customers, but then again, this isn't a new concept, even if it is crap.
I hope Apple keeps it up. They'll lose enough customers that the Mac community will go back to being too small to notice by the cyber criminal community, and then the Mac OS will be "malware foolproof" once again.
