It hasn't even been released and it's already breaking? Apple's QA must have dropped dramatically since Steve left.
cme884Feb 16, 2012
The thing I'm most excited about after looking at this stuff is airplay mirroring. I usually hook up my Mac to my TV via HDMI cable, but it's a pain in the ass. If I could do it wirelessly, it would be so much better. However, I'd still like to be able to use my Mac while watching a video, so I hope they can make it act like a second monitor rather than just mirroring the screen.
smokezzFeb 16, 2012
Man, that HDMI cable is so damn hard to hook up... so complicated. What will you ever do in real life?
kingfootFeb 17, 2012
considering most hdmi cables are 6ft, that's not a lot of distance especially if the screen is 40+".
smokezzFeb 17, 2012
Quit buying your s**t at Radio Shack... HDMI cables are available in pretty much any length you can think of.
kingfootFeb 18, 2012
wow calm the f**k down.
No s**t they come in all sorts of lengths, and colors, and even VERSIONS.
But look at it this way; Most people don't even know WHAT HDMI is. They just know they need the cable, and if it didn't come with the device, (which is on average 6ft) then they go to the store and ask the 19 y/o part time sales kid what to buy and they show them the basic get it done cable which is around 6ft.
wilhoitmFeb 17, 2012
Most normal people do not even know what a HDMI cable is, you guys have no clue why Apple succeeds!
moocow2024Feb 17, 2012
When Apple fixes the bullsh*t dual monitor full screen bug, I'll get excited about this. But not until then.
rudegarFeb 17, 2012
you mean the thing where the 2ed monitor show that cloth stuff when the other is displaying fullscreen ?
if so then it looks like it's by design
moocow2024Feb 17, 2012
I'm certain that it is by design. It needs to be changed. It makes utilizing a dual monitor setup impossible. You can no longer watch a video on fullscreen on one while doing something else on the other. It is absolutely idiotic.
rudegarFeb 17, 2012
my workaround is never using the fullscreen mode
smokezzFeb 17, 2012
ROFL. My father in law knows what an HDMI cable is, he's 65. This isn't 2003 anymore. Get out of your parents basement.
rotfoxFeb 17, 2012
Agreed with you, I've been looking at how to do it wirelessly for a while. Would be great to have a few less wires running around the place.
mtownFeb 17, 2012
But why is this supposedly revolutionary? I've already been wirelessly streaming HD output to my TV for almost 6 months now on my windows machine.
ryarFeb 17, 2012
Nobody claimed that it to be 'revolutionary'.
mtownFeb 17, 2012
Ok, maybe "revolutionary" was not the best way of putting it, but the article claims "AirPlay is one of the best features of iOS, and Apple’s bringing some of it to OS X", yet this same feature has already been available for Windows computers for multiple years. While I agree it is an important feature, you should not claim it is "one of the best features" when it has already been available on its competitor's machines for years, PLUS it will cost an extra $100 to even use, which it shouldn't.
cactusjack901Feb 17, 2012
Technically speaking; it's already available on OS X, it just isn't branded AirPlay. Perhaps that's the revolutionary part? The name.
cme884Feb 17, 2012
I agree, it's something that Apple should have had a while ago. But it's not like it's a feature that will make or break my choice of purchase. I bought an Apple over a PC for other reasons, but it's nice that they're doing something about it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
theskinsfactoryFeb 16, 2012
Title should read: Apple Announces OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, since Apple just dropped the "Mac" name from OS X.
HarvarajFeb 16, 2012
when and why these happened?
theskinsfactoryFeb 16, 2012
From what I've read it was today and the why is because they're taking a similar naming convention to iOS where the hardware isn't involved in the name. It's not iPhone iOS.
rudegarFeb 17, 2012
wonder what they will call the next computers then
iMac = iX
1badarsemutherFeb 16, 2012
It's got lots of great new features I'll probably never use. Call me when my iMac can play Blu-Ray.
silentspyderFeb 16, 2012
Haven't you heard? Bluray is just a bag of hurt.
johnnyg00Feb 16, 2012
Haven't you heard? Bluray is the chosen method for watching high-definition movies in full bandwidth.
silentspyderFeb 16, 2012
I guess I have to "/s"
1withTHEsharkFeb 16, 2012
I'm a Mac user, I don't have Bluray, I am still alive.
wilhoitmFeb 17, 2012
Blu-Ray is obsolete! The iPad 3 is going to have 4 times the resolution of Blu-Ray!
wmelnickFeb 17, 2012
Your iMac can play bluray. PLug in an external drive and go to macblurayplayer.com
wilhoitmFeb 17, 2012
What is Blu-Ray? Physical media is dead, the cloud killed it!
sab0tageFeb 17, 2012
Perhaps in South Korea where they can get fibre to their homes. If you're on copper you likely don't have the bandwidth to do 1080p streaming at the same quality as Blu-ray, and you might even have a download cap. Streaming the LoTR trilogy could quite easily consume 70% of a 100GB/month allowance.
cactusjack901Feb 17, 2012
I'm in the USA and I've got fibre to my home.
rkstarFeb 17, 2012
Your iMac can play Blu-ray with an external Blu-Ray drive. It's obviously not ideal, but it works.
rudegarFeb 17, 2012
1 or 2 generations of macs and I think they will
have removed the optical drive altogether
chennyFeb 16, 2012
"[Breaking]" keeps Apple stories relevant /s
novenatorFeb 17, 2012
I'm still on Snow Leopard, but it seems to be running great. Anyone know if I can just leapfrog Lion and go straight to Mt. Lion?
superkendallFeb 17, 2012
You should be able just just wait for ML. That's my plan for upgrading a few family members, I never moved them to Lion but I feel like ML will be a good time to move them forward.
novenatorFeb 17, 2012
Cool. I just didn't want to have to pay for a double upgrade, but wasn't sure how it worked. My last machine I kept the same OS for 8.5 years, lol.
worthwildFeb 16, 2012
Mountain Lion [breaking] elicits this in my brain:

APPLE IS ON FIRE !!!)
martov2010Feb 16, 2012
ah f**k off, you guys!
southsideirishFeb 16, 2012
They aren't? What would you call it when a company could absorb both Google and Microsoft? I understand the hate, but be real. Whether you like them or not, they are on fire.
nasmatic23Feb 16, 2012
Looks good. Glad to have iMessages on my computer so I can message/text people from my iMac or macbook rather than having to use my phone.
Notifications are practical especially when on a 27 iMac or any of the new super high res displays that will be coming out...you have so much screen real estate anyway I find myself with plenty of space.
I don't know why people complain, most of these are all optional and the real core of OS X is still fantastic and I could never go to another OS at this point. I can't wait to run this on faster hardware too.
rudegarFeb 17, 2012
also strange that facetime and ichat are both there merge them too
abhishekjain12Feb 17, 2012
I love to see this new version of lion...will this version is having SIRI..???
TomHanks4Feb 16, 2012
meh
esc27Feb 16, 2012
Meh, doesn't seem that special. I miss when OS updates actually brought something worthwhile to the picture and not just a few extra features...
awaketruthFeb 16, 2012
for apple addict , see that http://bonplandumoment.blogspot.com/
it's possible to translate it in your language
lizingkrFeb 18, 2012
The best reason why I am waiting for this update as a Korean is that now Apple supports very nice default Korean font, which was added on iOS 5.1 beta as well.
hiltonexeterFeb 17, 2012
This has some great additions to Lion, that I would love to have. They would be real useful to share between my iOS devises, Macs and Apple TV. The iPad already does all these things and it will be great to have it in the Macs too. I am glad that they are making it more secure by requiring apps though the App store. I hope that it will still run those bought prior to the App store.
sch15mFeb 17, 2012
the question is, why 'Mountain Lion' and not something sexier like 'Cougar' or 'Puma'?
BullHawkFeb 17, 2012
I don't really see any 'must have' improvement here. These incremental upgrades are just filler IMO.
generalbulldogFeb 17, 2012
Well ain't this about a bitch, I just got 10.7 bloody late last year and now they're releasing a new one?
superkendallFeb 17, 2012
Sometime in the late summer or fall so it's not like you're not going to spend a lot of time with Lion until then.
pacocrowleyFeb 17, 2012
Oh my gosh, bestest news evah! I can't believe it!
bcm79Feb 16, 2012
I've been using MacOS since System 6. OS X hasn't had any major improvement since 10.5, excepting Grand Central for 10.6 but that's really of interest to power users and developers only.
The thing driving the upgrades since 10.5 is the whole Dot.Mac/MobilMe/iCloud integration part, and it's annoying. I like having my mail and music sync, but does it take a MacOS upgrade?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
cactusjack901Feb 17, 2012
Not just that, but with "features" like Gatekeeper, it seems like the desktop is headed to a more walled-in future.
I'm a mac user, and I run Snow Leopard on an old Dell that I use as my main desktop, just to illustrate how much of a macfag I am; but I dunno, I'm a bit worried about the future of this OS.
kamtsaFeb 16, 2012
Breaking? I don't need an OS that will break my computer.
clbwFeb 16, 2012
Then you should get a Mac.

10.8's "One more thing" is going to be Siri!
ayahyawebFeb 17, 2012
amazing design~
ophelloFeb 16, 2012
Is this really worth a whole digit upgrade? The leaps used to be much wider. I'm waiting to see what other improvements they made under the hood.
silentspyderFeb 16, 2012
I was on thinking of upgrading to lion but I think I'll just wait for this instead. Although I still fear for my adobe cs3 (the reason I haven't updated yet)Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
southsideirishFeb 16, 2012
You may not be able to wait as I don't think Apple will let you skip the upgrade. And skip Lion? Means you are on Snow Leopard. <shakes head>
Can't see Apple letting you do that. Too big of a jump and it is only $33, dude! Apple isn't Microsoft!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
pauls101Feb 16, 2012
This looks even less compelling that Lion, nothing but marketing-driven lobotomization to make iOS idiots feel more at home. Lion at least added resizing of windows from any edge, which was worth the price all by itself, and most of the really obnoxious junk can be disabled; 10.8 appears to add no value at all in terms of useful features.
Apple may not completely drop Mac's for a while yet, but they're certainly paying a lot less attention to them. At least they recognize that $129 is too much to charge for what they're delivering nowadays.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
southsideirishFeb 16, 2012
Ah, for what? When did Apple charge $129.00 for an OS upgrade? Never? So, $129.00 for what, again? Most I have ever paid for an OS upgrade was $99.00 for a family pack OS upgrade. So, WTF is the $129.00!
amaoicanFeb 16, 2012
I think Tiger was $100+. Not sure about Leopard.
southsideirishFeb 16, 2012
10.6! WTF! Who the f**k cares! Ancient history. LoL! hahahaha!
Yeah, maybe, but Apple is a hardware company now, and Steve realized that there was more profit in hardware, then in software, so OS upgrades have been around $30 for the last three or four years.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
pauls101Feb 16, 2012
They pretty much all cost $129 ($189 for the family pack IIRC) up until Lion; I paid for a couple when I wasn't working anywhere that had a developer membership (which cost $500+ for the one that included software in those days.) Might have been a student version for $99, but I doubt it was a family pack.
10.2 was well worth it, the first version where we didn't have to do the actual development on OS9. That was before Cocoa worked well enough or made any sort of business sense for a commercial operation (or came with usable dev tools, which really didn't happen until 10.5 or 10.6.)
Disclaimer: if I could find a reason to develop for OS9 again, I'd happily discard OS X and especially XCode except for internet use.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Dude...your wrong! Your talking out of your butthole and don't have a clue what you are talking about.
Snow Leopard $29.00
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
Lion is on the App Store fo $29.99. Want a screencap.
Dude, you are clueless if you still believe this, because the Apple web site, the AppStore and every effing Genius in the world will tell you that you are wrong.
Check google before you speak out of you butthole again

Dude...Lion is $29.99 on the Mac App Store. Do your hw next time.
