thenextweb.com— Apple is accused of witholding payments to French copyright association Copie France, which are thought to total $6.3 million in 2011.

Did you even read the story? Or know what this tax is before commenting? Can you imagine going into a movie theater with an iPad for the express purpose of using it's camera for recording the movie?
Don't bother to reply, the answer is no for all three questions
While I agree the "copy tax" is a bizarre law and nobody would use an iPad to record a movie, the law blankets every device that can record video and has over 64gb in storage. Not much Apple can do about that unless the law somehow gets changed or exceptions get added.
Don't get your panties in a twist. The French aren't going to change their law for Apple no much how their toys get you all hot and sweaty.
We all know how much your beloved company like to screw everyone from customers to the children who make their stuff to boost their profits. That doesn't mean it's anything less that nauseating to everyone except the most devoted herds of Apple sheeple
It's SO adorable how stupid you are! The writer claims Apple raised its prices but didn't say if it was to collect this tax or to compensate for fluxuations in the Euro or because they just wanted more money.
No matter, the funny part is that you're defending a bad tax law simply because it may (or may not) come down on the wrong side of Apple. If this was against some other companies products, maybe even one you use, would you still be defending it?
Here's a quote from the article just in case even you as the person who submitted it didn't bother to read past where an obscure RIAA French clone wanted to grab some cash from Apple (who can afford to easily without breaking a sweat while I suppose you sweat quite often).
"Apple has been joined by Nokia, Motorola, Sony-Ericsson, RIM and several unions in protesting the tax on devices, which appears to have had the desired effect when France rejected the tax on tablets on January 1, with no tariffs set for 2012."
With 100 billion in the back they have enough money to stand up for what is right. Why is it right they should pay a tax that assumes users steal? Why is it right anyone pay that tax?
Canada has a similar law. A certain percentage of sales of CDs are supposed to go to the recording industry to compensate musicians for the "piracy" of their music. The way it is implemented means only the top grossing acts get paid anything. According to the story the French have extended this to other devices.
The nub of the story is Apple is accused (but not proven) of withholding these funds from an association set up to redistribute them. The author doesn't say why. I would presume it could be from reasons ranging from they bypassed the organisation and redistributed the funds directly, to they don't want to give the money to the organisation. It could even be that the figure mentioned could be a bad guess and that Apple had better numbers and actually did pay up. We don't know.
Looking at the big picture, this isn't a tech story. Although Apple is a tech company they can do non-tech things. This is an example. Although they are accused of withholding funds, that is not a tech activity. Neither would be hiring a janitor to work in one of their offices. In terms of tech, this story is as relevant as a story about what a receptionist had for lunch on Tuesday. In terms of taxes (politics/business) and other company activities, this story is important.
Planar surface dimensions of an iPad are 8x that of a miniDV camcorder. This is no "spy cam". If the tax is some kind of user fee paid on behalf of infringing customer uses then the agency better have a concrete scenario and stats to back it up. Otherwise it is just a tariff. And not even a protectionist one at that.
France moved its electronics manufacturing to Asia a couple decades ago. Yeah, it is a memory tax alright; memories of bygone days, that is. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Johnny Johnny Johnny, you're missing the big picture! It's OBVIOUS that the iPad is the PERFECT device for capturing video at the movies.
1. You snap a picture of your face and use it as wallpaper
2. Then you secure the device against your face with a bungie cord and put on a beret.to disguise it
3. Then you use the crappy front-facing camera and built-in microphone on the iPad to capture the movie while holding your head perfectly still for 2 hours.
4. PROFIT!

Maybe France should seize the apple.com domain, all the company assets and shut down their sales. Worked for MegaUpload.

Because with 100 billion in the bank they can't afford to pay the taxes they owe

NO one thinks this is a good law, but hey, as long as you can get some diggs at Apple that's all that matters right?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

It's basically a law that incriminates everyone, who has no chance to prove innocence.

This is silly, they should just buy France.
