I think it's very possible Android could be #1 before 2014.
kellySep 16, 2010
This prediction assumes that Apple won't expand beyond AT&T in the US. Assuming that happens, people don't have to settle for android.
TomHanks4Sep 16, 2010
Android is still outselling Apple in the rest of the world, where the iPhone is not limited to a single carrier.
demdudeSep 17, 2010
The iPhone is locked down to a single carrier almost everywhere else in the world. There are just one or two european countries where Apple is forced to sell the phone without a contract.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
nickedynickSep 17, 2010
I didn't settle for Android, I chose it over the iPhone.
schrutefanSep 16, 2010
Not going to happen unless they start putting Android in low-end handsets.
dagr8timSep 17, 2010
Already happening. You can get "texting" phones that are locked into 1.5 or 1.6 of Android. These phones are free or under $20 with a contract.
Also, VZW is putting the Droid, Droid 2, & Droid X out on their prepaid program.
tketchSep 16, 2010
People need to realize that what is good for Google is not a parallel goal as to what is good for Apple or the consumer. Google wants market share regardless of actual consumer experience through applications etc., because Google profits from SEARCH marketshare.
Apple on the other hand has been focusing on what makes the best experience for the consumer, but has been gimped by only being on a single carrier in the United States. I commonly argue that what is good for the consumer is a truly seamless and polished UX and not just powerful search (which Apple arguably delivers well through Google and Bing as it is).Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
searching4socksSep 17, 2010
No one is interested in Android for the sake of Google's market share. It is about the consumer experience still.
hardeep1singhSep 17, 2010
Not going to happen unless Symbian sits behind with their hands tied. The screenshots of Symbian^4 tell me that's not happening.
ultrasparcSep 17, 2010
It's also very possible that Android will fragment ten fold too. I can see it now. The Streak III with 1.6 in 2014. I can't wait!
thoughtsonthisSep 16, 2010
I really have to get me one!
xclusive1Sep 16, 2010
I will always remain an Android Geek. Looking forward desperately to the upcoming releases.
mabakerbrakerSep 17, 2010
Looking forward to new spy engines implementations as well, I suppose? Oh, the blindness of a geek. Give him a semi-open mobile OS and he will be thinking it's a pussy.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

More likely if they dont deal with antenna issues like apple!
ssquared22Sep 16, 2010
I hope Apple fixes those issues, they drive me nuts.
kellySep 16, 2010
All cell phones have this issue. This isn't anything specific to Apple
cawpinSep 17, 2010
Bulls**t. Yes, all cell phones have attenuation but not nearly the level of the iPhone 4. I tried it myself in the Apple store just to see and the signal dropped from full signal to 1 bar in 15 seconds and I was holding it like I do my own phone, a Droid.
digitalmotoSep 16, 2010
I'm not too surprised. Android is hitting it big. I've got an Android and I'm loving it!
kellySep 16, 2010
Android is the best option available if you're not on AT&T
badqatSep 17, 2010
Actually, I returned my iPhone 4 and now rock a Samsung Captivate on AT&T. And I think the Galaxy S phone proves that Android can be the best option available on AT&T, too!
thtswutshesaidSep 16, 2010
Theres also like 4 different versions of the android which could explain why they are so high in sales.
luv2luvSep 16, 2010
The way Android is building their platform, I won't be surprised if they become #1 by 2012. However, even if they reach #1 that doesn't mean they are the best. They just have a model that lets their product reach more people because they aren't tied down to a single carrier and they can put their software on all differnet types of phones.
onlyscSep 16, 2010
won't take that long
matt_rameauSep 16, 2010
Google should start to invest in additions to the platform which are currently unique to blackberry, like device management, lockdown and privacy constraints. Blackberry is the real competitor, not Apple.
skatopherSep 17, 2010
ROFL!
sungod228Sep 17, 2010
That's like saying VHS is the real competitor to Blue ray.
RIM is not updating their platform at a pace that can keep up with the competition and they have already fallen way behind. Can't say I'm surprised, after all they stole/circumvented patents and copyrights to create their product. No kidding they don't know what to do to move forward
zc456Sep 16, 2010
I have a feeling were gonna see the same thing happen to iOS as was with the Mac.
TomHanks4Sep 16, 2010
i think you're right. the iPhone won't disappear, it will just become a niche market like the Mac.
the problem with this is that, like the mac, software on the iPhone will suffer. the top programmers will support Android first, like they support Windows first now. being second class citizens when it comes to apps may hurt the iPhone more than it hurts the Mac due to importance of apps on a mobile device.
Closed AccountSep 16, 2010
No biggie. Mac apps hold their own ground. Some have really unique interfaces and provide really unique experiences. Nothing wrong with keeping it different. There will always be people who will want something a little different. Let's keep the competition alive because that leads to better products and prices.
TomHanks4Sep 17, 2010
Once you get away from the most popular types of software, and into more special interest stuff, Macs really suffer.
For instance I am in to amateur radio and have a macbook I'd like to use for mobile operations. The amount and quality of amateur radio software available for the mac is pathetic. While there are dozens of options for things like PSK, APRS, SSTV, etc on Windows and a decent number on linux, there is almost nothing available on the mac, and what there is seems to have been abandoned years ago. The best software you can get on mac is just open source stuff like fldigi, which runs on several platforms including the mac, but doesn't use the mac interface at all.
dagr8timSep 17, 2010
When I'm working on a project that has a deadline. I don't want "unique" or "experience" to be involved. I just want it to work.
gypsieSep 17, 2010
No, they wont. There are more money for developers in iOS than in Android. btw Android will end up just like Linux Desktop.
TomHanks4Sep 17, 2010
lol uninformed much?
kellySep 16, 2010
Pay careful attention to all of these "Android is beating Apple iPhone" reports and you'll find that the "studies" on which they are based have chosen their dates and what they cover very carefully in order to favor Android. Yes, Android is growing rapidly. In the initial quarters after launch, that's what happens. The same thing happened with iPhone, too.
Measuring Apple iPhone sales at their low point (everybody knows a new one is coming around June), with a massive new model leak saturating even the non-tech media, limiting to one country (in which Apple has an long-running and hopefully soon-to-end single carrier exclusive), and even excluding entire market segments in which Apple's iPhone has a rapidly-growing presence in order to make Android phones look more successful than iPhone would be laughable if so many saps didn't swallow it hook, line, and sinker.
Why is this happening? The answer, as usual, likely has much to do with who stands to benefit most from the disinformation.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
TomHanks4Sep 16, 2010
how exactly does Gartner, a research firm, stand to benefit from making predictions which are inaccurate?
step out of the RDF for a minute, you're starting to lose the plot
kashemSep 17, 2010
Stock market manipulation, regardless of final outcome. People make money off these "predictions" all the time.

I don't think this story is weird or unexpected. A mobile operating system runs on over 10 different manufacturers sets. It's a very high and expected result. unlike the iOS, which is only on iPhone, iPad and iPod. 1 manufacturer vs. over 10. Horaay!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I hope Google becomes Number 1 much sooner than that. That way, we won't have to read news about their progress EVERY DAY.

No one here sees a big mistake? WebOS could have some success as one pointed out. The next release of WebOS has some serious innovation.
The mistake though is to count MS out! This is MS! Remember Internet Explorer. They came from behind and then threw so much money at it it jumped to dominate the entire market. Microsoft has serious marketing capital. They've thrown so much money into this the experience will be new and it'll hold it's own and challenge Android, BB OS, iOS and Symbian.
Symbian marketshare will drop but it'll drop because future N devices will stop using Symbian. Nokia itself is moving away from the OS. So you have to put these figures into perspective.
mymainmanSep 17, 2010
There's a great difference between a web browser and a mobile phone operating system.
Yes, IE did win over Netscape but that was mainly because it became the default web browser that was integrated into windows and most people didn't care to switch to Netscape since IE just worked out of the box.
Now we have two very established app stores for Android and IOs with a great momentum for apps. I can't see how MS could get anything near the market share they have, no matter what.
cawpinSep 17, 2010
Windows Phone 7 is going to be amazing.
gundammySep 17, 2010
expecting it to use mobile platform to erase Win OS from monopoly, I see future in Android, but Apple? You can have a bite :).
gmanskySep 17, 2010
With Google's large pocket, I don't see why it won't be. As soon as more apps are developed, more adoption of the consumers on Android.
mabakerbrakerSep 17, 2010
Funny to see the fanboiis rampaging here on digg spewing ish about their favorite spy OS. In other threads they're screaming to question authority and jizz and whenever Google and Android is mentioned they are turning into small minded sheep.
Oh and they still have the guts ton throw their own anti apple agenda. As if they didn't have to jailbrake their own plastic toys for them to be usable.
thejokkerSep 17, 2010
So will Android have better looking apps then iOS by then?
readmeSep 17, 2010
Which fork of Android are we talking about, because let's be honest, the Verizon fork is about 9 months away from happening.
rudaSep 17, 2010
Android will certainly grow faster than the other OS's in the next few years. That said, I think Gartner's estimates are usually worse than any Digg user's best guess. Where's Bada or MeeGo in these forecasts?
danbarkerSep 17, 2010
THE SHOCK!
tfm123Sep 23, 2010
if anything that can kill Android is going to be device fragmentation
