Digg market share on a steady decline
dm33Sep 7, 2010
Why is it declining? Whats the alternative? Reddit?
thejokkerSep 7, 2010
but it's really not.
bailjaitSep 6, 2010
glad to see the protest's still going on.
dvsbastardSep 6, 2010
It's not even a protest any more... Most people (except the really regular and attached users) don't give a crap about what a website does - if the content declines (i.e. crap front page stories and next to no relevant comments or discussion), people just disappear - and this is exactly what you a witnessing.

Several years ago I was sitting on a train on the outskirts of Tokyo. I was accompanied by an interpreter who was contracted by the corporate office. He was a nice enough guy who moved to Japan to teach school children to speak English. We were quietly sitting in this train for about an hour when he said "the threshold of suspended disbelief".
me: "What?"
him: "Suspension of disbelief is what we do when we watch a movie or listen to a fictional story. When we suspend disbelief, we are neither believing nor disbelieving the story. We simply choose not to make a judgment so that we can enjoy the entertainment.
We Americans have something we call a 'tall tale'. The story starts out with some believable details such as location and ordinary people. As the story progresses, the details become more and more outrageous. The story teller sees how far he can take his audience, slowly testing for that threshold. The smarter members of the audience are amused by other members who catch on later. And there are those who actually get upset after the punchline because they felt like they were cruelly deceived."
me: "So what's your point?"
him: "Sometimes it's best to not give your audience a reason to question what they actual believe; because once you've crossed that threshold you can never draw them back to the state of suspended disbelief."
me: "And you're telling me this because...?"
him: "Think about it. You're not really on a train near Tokyo. You're typing this on a site that pretends to promote 'popular' stories to the front page. What do you think will happen when the users discovers that the voting algorithm is fake?"
me: "They will leave."

Traffic has remained virtually unchanged. Has even seen a spike from the last few weeks of v3.
I hate v4. Haven't been back here nearly as much now. But after reading your comments I went and checked the numbers (Alexa, Quantcast, Compete)....and they just don't add up to what you're saying.
Sure....maybe subjectively the front page stories aren't as good....but it's not effecting visitor count.
orsoscrootSep 7, 2010
sooooo you're just speaking out of your anus, right?
seriously though, traffic hasn't dropped. all that has happened is that most people were mildly annoyed by the hardcore diggers that suddenly went all reddit all over everyone.
also: reddit is diggs retarded nerdy cousin.

If Apple wants to combat Google, they need to open their phone to many more carriers ASAP.

Android is such a powerful tool.

That's what she said...
thelostviking22Sep 6, 2010
There was a post very similar to this a little while back and I saw a comment that made a very good point. I don't remember who said it, but, with the Android OS being on more than ONE phone and on more than ONE carrier, it makes perfect sense why it's taking a steady share of the market.
If you're not on one carrier, you have the option of at least 2 other carriers for an Android phone. If you can't get the exact Android phone you want, there are several options for other phones.
If you're not on AT&T, and not on the waiting list for the iphone, you won't be getting it. So, to say the Android OS, that's on more phones and carriers, is on a steady rise is like taking a gun, wooden bat, hammer, machete, and brass knuckles to a knife fight.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

"So, to say the Android OS, that's on more phones and carriers, is on a steady rise is like taking a gun, wooden bat, hammer, machete, and brass knuckles to a knife fight."
And in that same fight, the opposition chose by his (or her) own will to only bring a knife and forgo the rest.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

diggv4 is DEAD
bigtime2Sep 6, 2010
I hope it is. I just wish Kevin, and others working for Digg, would realize this and switch it back to v3.

Have you got anything without spam?

The Android OS is gaining market share, but expensive for app developers to contend with. Upwards compatibility was thrown out the window, so every app is tied to a specific OS, which for Android comes out every 6 months. While this offers the benefit of being able to sell apps to the same customer multiple times, development time and resources such as capital are cut in half.
One bad cell phone design won't bring the android OS to a halt. A business cycle of decreased sales will however impair the app developer’s ability to recoup their investment.
Bottom Line:
Just because the Android market share is increasing, doesn't mean your app's market is increasing. Just because you own a phone with an Android OS, doesn't mean it is the same OS as the apps you want.
Will lack of OS compatibility negatively affect phone sales? Or will functionally win out over all? It will likely different demographic to demographic. Wagering that only one major demographic upgrades their phone every time there is a new phone out.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

In the North America maybe, but as surprising as this maybe to the American technology press, other parts of the world exist too. And there, Android is totally irrelevant.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
kroge86Sep 6, 2010
Lol irrelevant?
Android is the fastest growing mobile platform in the world. It went from 1% to 10% of the global market share in the space of a year. It's highly relevant.
I hear Eurotrash like you whining about Symbian phones not getting attention in US tech media. Understandable until you realize that they ignore all phones that suck. Symbian is a crappy OS. Dumbphones do not get much attention in the US media either. So although Symbian phones like the Nokia N8 are loved in Europe, Americans don't have interest in them because phones like that are pieces of crap compared to iPhone and Android.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Listen geekboy, before you go mouthing off about things you clearly no nothing of, I suggest you get a passport and see a bit of the world. Frankly, I couldn't give a flying f**k what you and your Mickey Mouse magazines think. While you're jerking off over Apple and Sarah Palin, the rest of the world's looking East to where the future lies.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
kroge86Sep 7, 2010
You're one of those idiotic limeys whose base all of your views through your predetermined desire to belittle the US at every turn. You really don't know s**t about this topic, you're only arguing from the side of the line in the sand that you've already planted yourself.
Let me clue you in to something, because you're proceeding through life like a mindless drone completely oblivious to facts, as is the case with most Brits. Android OS is the fastest growing mobile platform in the world, not just the US. This is the case in your country as well. You say the east is where the future lies, funny... because Android is dominating in sales growth in Asia, including China.
The rate that both iPhone and Android are taking business away from other smartphone platforms will result in the market being polar between the two in just a few years.
Seriously... Android is Google. GOOGLE. Google is American. You're so wacked out of your mind with your anti-Americanism that you're trying to pretend that it's irrelevant? Really?
Seriously, you're glib. Get a grip on reality, Nigel.

well, i like Android mobile operating system, although i got a nokia mobile phone, but, next mobile phone, google is first

I honestly have no interest in the Android/iPhone pissing match, but I'm curious to see how all this shakes out by next year. I've seen consumer surveys that show roughly 24% of Android owners wanting to switch to another platform with their next phone and roughly 6% of iPhone owners wanting to switch to something else. And there's also supposedly a significant number of Verizon customers waiting to buy an iPhone if it becomes available on that network (what the @#$%& is Apple waiting for anyway?)
How that plays out will be interesting and show if Android has hit a plateau or if it's a steady trajectory.
karebuSep 7, 2010
its not climbing because people like it. pretty much everything that's non-iphone is turning android. so it's not like people like it.
joculatorSep 7, 2010
Anyone know if there's an online casino available on Android yet...I want to play Hold 'Em for money on my phone.
thejokkerSep 7, 2010
I'm planning on replacing our two iphones with Spring android phones for 2 reasons. Reliable service and 4g (we are in a 4g city).
I hate that I'm giving up the itunes store and some of the "just works," but until apple gives customers more carrier options they will loose people over service. I hope the evo/epic aren't a let down, but I'm done with ATT.
