Who is the virus? The one who tries new things, or the ones who add nothing and who's only business model is to copy and run on margins too low to innovate?
evilmooseSep 9, 2010
MP3 players existed prior to the iPod, Tablets existed prior to the iPad, Smart phones existed before the iPhone. The only innovation I see is the marketing to stupid trendy sheep that wear black rimmed glasses.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
dynamojoeSep 9, 2010
if that's all you see, you need to change your prescription.
stanski1Sep 9, 2010
Ummm Who actually used an MP3 player before an iPod, or a tablet before the iPad? Next to nobody. They also reshaped the smartphone market with their UI and touch screens. Apple's innovation comes from user interfaces. They know what people want and make the experience a pleasant one. There is a big difference between invention and innovation look it up dumbass!
SeiLuciusSep 9, 2010
Apple primarily innovates marketing solutions. What have they actually invented or developed? They just take existing technology and put it together in a pretty package.
Contrast HP, which uses the funds from it's price gouging ink and quarterly refresh of products to do genuine research on hardware and software. Or Microsoft, which takes its cash cow office software and funds highly academic research on algorithms and programming. Or RIM, which sets the standard for enterprise level interactivity with its smartphones. Apple hasn't actually developed any new technology, they're pretty much solid profit margins with no contribution to society.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

> What have they actually invented or developed?
Apple does develop quite a bit of new technology (look at their patent portfolio) but their key strength is integrating and deploying new technologies in an easy to use fashion.
Look at the effect they have on products - Apple releases a wheel-controlled MP3 player, in a year everyone else has a wheel-controlled MP3 player. Apple releases an all-in-one monitor based PC, now Dell and HP make them as well. Apple eliminates ADB and serial ports from their low end Macs, and basically creates the market for USB gadgets. Apple releases a touch-screen phone, a year later everyone and their brother has a touchscreen phone that even has a similar interface.
Inventing some new technology is a tenth of the battle. The real job is making a product that takes good advantage of it.
SeiLuciusSep 9, 2010
Engineering might be ten times more important, but invention is the bottom brick in the citadel of technological progress.
I suppose "no contribution to society" is overstating it though, they do force the adaptation of technology to the available market, which counts for something. I wouldn't agree with those examples though,: "wheel controlled mp3 player" was a fad followed by businesses that wanted to remind their customers of a better product; USB gadgets were pushed by IBM, apple adopted firewire, and were widely adopted long before apple removed serial ports from its machines; and the touch screen adoption might have been early, but companies were developing it already, before the iphone was released.
I also admit it wasn't fair to say that marketing solutions don't contribute to society; upon further reflection they really have. Apple's iTunes store was IMO the biggest contribution of the iPod, an excellent delivery method that didn't really exist in business before.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

The technology is useless if nobody can use it. Apple uses the technology in a manner that everybody can use. When the original iMac came out it was the first computer with only USB ports. I remember that there was a scramble to get a printer to market with a usb port because there were none. Some PCs had USB ports, but nobody was using them.
schneidz101Sep 10, 2010
jbmcb: Apple eliminates ADB (do you mean db-9 ?) and serial ports from their low end Macs, and basically creates the market for USB gadgets.
huh ?, i dont think that usb is really an apple idea.
jbmcb: Apple releases a touch-screen phone, a year later everyone and their brother has a touchscreen phone that even has a similar interface.
i heard the same complaint about how ifone stole the interface from palm dashboard.

Wow. I never saw it that way....
On the otherhand... for a company that supposedly has yet to develop or invent or develop anything- it's AMAZING how many people try and copy their stuff.
wilhoitmSep 10, 2010
SeiLucius, I would say that Microsoft is better at marketing than Apple, case and point is that it is more difficult to sell horrible products successfully!

Shih is just scared, because Apple has grabbed the spotlight and invalidated Acer's business model. He wishes for a return to the good old days, when he didn't have to think.

Acer is one to talk.
kingpSep 9, 2010
That's actually kind of funny considering, for years, Acer's products were riddled with junkware and pseudo-malware. They're not so bad now, but a few years ago...phew!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

well, i have not heard of virus in Apple's products much.

You know...I had actually gained some respect for Acer before this..now it went back down to 0.

The iPod has succeeded and will continue to succeed because of the iTunes ecosystem. It's what makes the iPod and iPhone successful. People like things that are easy to use and require no thinking to make work.
I love my Samsung Galaxy S, but one thing I miss about the iPhone is the ease of syncing music and apps. While there are certainly solutions for the Android devices (currently, I'm using iTunes Agent), it is too frustrating for the average user to search and find a solution that is as easy as Apple's solution. Someone really needs to develop a trully open and available solution for Android devices (and don't mention DoubleTwist because their software is way too slow at this point). Until Google, not a device manufacturer, steps up and releases something (and endorses it as "the" solution for syncing), I don't know if the iDevices will lose dominance.
Or, Microsoft could try opening the Zune player to manage any device connected to the computer.
I'm a geek and I love toying with my gadgets so I don't mind the choices and the work of finding a good solution. I'm not the average use though.
schneidz101Sep 10, 2010
i guess the solution would be not to use itunes (but instead rite-clik-copy/ rite-clik-paste to copy files to your fone).
palm pre tried itunes integration but apple changed something and made it useless so palm made a patch then apple made it not work again then palm gave up.
uncoverorSep 9, 2010
Acer products are manufactured garbage. Their one goal is to win the race to the bottom and get their crap sold at Wal-Mart. People who Aspire to own a computer one day, but can't afford one settle for acer.
jtmedinaSep 10, 2010
which part of the manufacturing process is garbage for you?
astradSep 9, 2010
That's what Shih said...
pablomacSep 9, 2010
I Shih what you did thereā¦
randomguysteveSep 9, 2010
Acer really doesn't have much room to talk about other companies' products. I've had to ship every netbook I've bought from them back for repairs (2 of them), not to mention 2 of my friends have to ship theirs back for warranty repairs.
I don't trust Acer farther than I could chuck their netbooks.

I cant stand apple. Everyone gets taken in by the adversting and are so blined to see the issues. I have a MAC and it casues me more trouble than my windows machines.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

LOL blined - creative spelling
gamepr0Sep 9, 2010
It's a Mac, not a MAC.
Most of the issues people will have with Macs is that they use it like it's Windows.
Apple makes opinionated software, try reading up on workflows on Mac OS X.
If you're talking about hardware issues, sadly it happens, go back to the store.
Last resort: Install Windows using Boot Camp and buy a Windows machine next time, some people just prefer Windows, so be it.

When people wants to pay more for a logo, their defense will always be full of vitriol to defend throwing away money.
So far Apple has not made a single product I need, not one!
commodusSep 9, 2010
The same ones who think an Apple buyer is just "paying more for a logo" are the ones who are simple-minded enough to only think "bigger numbers! Better!"
Long battery life, solid build quality, no crapware, phone support from people you can actually understand... those cost money.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Acer makes shihty products.
jtmedinaSep 10, 2010
Why? Which part of their hardware components is poor?
wilhoitmSep 10, 2010
The Plastic part! Which makes up about 99.9% of an Acer product!
jtmedinaSep 10, 2010
99.9% plastic?. I think you have to learn more maths.
50% of the price goes for the screen, 40% is the motherboard which in many many cases comes embedded along with the graphics card, ethernet, wireless then you have the ram and the plastic case represents less than 10% of the product and does not represent the real quality of the product. The case is just decorative in most of the cases.
I worked for nearly a year repairing all kind of laptops and I can tell you that from the hardware perspective there is no difference between a mac or any other laptop.
