Its reported that 70% of Blackberry phones sales in Latin America are made in Venezuela. Being able to access Twitter from smartphones has been recognized as one of the main reasons for Twitters growth over the past two years. Another factor to which has been attributed to the Twitter phenomenon in Venezuela is its use as a political tool. The Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez joined the social network in April, and he currently has around 800,000 followers. This resource, as well as the Blackberry, has served as political tools for the Venezuelan population due to the control of the media and information by the Venezuelan government, and for this reason it has had a great impact in the South American country.
