Despite only one third of 30 million Venezuelans being active internet users, the country has ranked 3rd in the list of the top Tweeting countries in the world, a Comscore report has announced (August 2010). Following Indonesia and Brazil, Twitter has a 19.0% reach in Venezuela. Latin America experienced the biggest growth in Twitter usage, growing 305% since 2009.
There have been a number of factors attributed to the success of Twitter in Venezuela, one of which being the popularity of the Blackberry phone. Its reported that 70% of Blackberry phones sales in Latin America are made in Venezuela. Being able to access Twitter from smartphones has been recognized as one of the main reasons for Twitters growth over the past two years.
Another factor to which has been attributed to the Twitter phenomenon in Venezuela is its use as a political tool. The Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez joined the social network in April, and he currently has around 800,000 followers. This resource, as well as the Blackberry, has served as political tools for the Venezuelan population due to the control of the media and information by the Venezuelan government, and for this reason it has had a great impact in the South American country.
