Also, the Yes Men are absolutely awesome!

Was thinking the same thing. . .granted there is a good amount of stuff that I doubt people would care about. Automotive manuals etc.

I know one of them (was one of my college professors) and have met the other. They are good guys if a bit odd. Unfortunate to hear they are being sued. I wish them luck.

If the chamber of commerce are suing them....they must be doing something correct.
Republicans destroyed america.....the basic premise of american capitalism = profit is more important than you....all of you.

It must be sad to live in constant fear of the big bad right-wing boogeyman.
do you honestly believe you can neatly blame one group of people for the fall of a society?
diggerlaterJul 23, 2010
The politics of capitalism is based on the ethics of egoism, not blind greed.

ovironJul 23, 2010
How clever of you to pick up on that. Don't you know that "all generalizations are false".
honoredmuleJul 23, 2010
Most generalizations are /true/, except for the part where people refuse to understand that counterexample proves nothing nor even calls a /generalization/ into question.
vitriolandangstJul 23, 2010
If you can't actually refute something, it's best to make it sound ridiculous and then call it a "generalization."
You can't really say that ALL BEES are going to sting you --- just the ones you sit on. And not EVERY Nazis wanted to help Hitler take over the world.
NOT ALL Republicans supported Corporatism -- MOST were just ignorant and thought saying; "supply and demand, let the rich people have money so they can create jobs, we don't need to hinder free trade, social programs never work, we don't need regulators on banks, on the environment, we don't need unemployment insurance, we don't need Universal health care, we need to drop the bomb on Iraq before they attack us with remote controlled drones... deterrence,... blah blah blah" made them sound smart.
greevarJul 23, 2010
"If the chamber of commerce are suing them....they must be doing something correct. "
I agree, nobody can effect change by doing what's comfortable.
"Republicans destroyed America"
No, I think you need to throw a much wider net than that.
"the basic premise of American capitalism = profit is more important than you....all of you. "
This statement, has more truth than it implies.
The corporate mandate is to put profit above all other priorities, even the public good. If they can dump arsenic into the local water supply, make triple profits, and get away with it, you're darn tootin' they'll do it. The right thing and the wrong thing is a matter of which costs them less. They don't make ethical decisions, only business decisions.
honoredmuleJul 23, 2010
It's up to policy makers to ensure that business decisions are forced to align with ethical decisions. That's probably the foundational basis for viewpoints like "Republicans destroyed America." Ultimate responsibility always falls upon humanity as a whole, but then there are cases where responsibility has been explicitly delegated, and then there is justification for narrowing one's focus.
greevarJul 23, 2010
Policy "used" to regulate the highest motive of corporations, which was to promote the "public good". Nothing was to take priority over this. Somehow, after corporations fraudulently claimed human rights, they overturned the mandate that the corporation was to operate in the public good. Unfortunately, policy makers don't think about what's best for their voters, but what will get voters to re-elect them to office. This, paired with a overly abundant amount of lobbying money, is what ensures that we will have a hard time getting policy makers that will do what's right into office.
denizen42Jul 25, 2010
Which is why, lobbying is probably the unwisest social decision in history.
suricouJul 24, 2010
Actually that's the basic premise of all capitalism. The idea is to use people's natural greed as a benefit. Where there is a demand, someone will meet it. Where two suppliers exist, the superior one will succeed.
For the most part it actually works extremally well - and that's quite an achievement, getting billions of independant agents each acting in their own interest to, through some emergent process, also benefit themselves collectively.
For the most part. There are plenty of times when it hasn't gone as it should - or worse, has gone exactly as it should, and lead to stable monopolies or success for those willing to resort to sabotaging the competition or 'cheating.' Microsoft is an example of both - the first in the way it remains on top because of the inherent advantage of a popular operating system recieving widespread support, the second in the way it effectively destroyed some competition (Netscape, Winamp, various email clients) by bundling competing products with it's operating systems.

okay I"m curious. So they were able to post a view critical of the government on the internet, and get their message out... We need net neutrality why? It seems pretty neutral to me.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
lllsecretchimpJul 23, 2010
You and your damn facts. We can imagine the problem, so we need to regulate NOW!
mikephoenix22Jul 23, 2010
its more about protecting from corporate interests. The Comcast P2P filtering incident proved that the big telcos are able and willing to slow down or block specific protocols based on their interests and not the interests of the consumer. Unfortunately here in the US we do NOT have the ability to say to the company "we don't like what your doing so cancel my service" because most cities have only one or MAYBE two ISPs to choose from and internet service has become so critical in our daily lives. The CEOs of more than one telco has stated how they hate being considered dumb pipes and would like the ability to prioritize all web traffic, so they could charge you different rates for things like VOIP calls, HTTP, and streaming. Imagine the impact of this type of control on any sort of new protocol. A new protocol would not be prioritized very high and would end up being slow and sluggish. This would make any adoption of new tech take longer, regardless if it is better or not.
THAT is why we need net neutrality.
honoredmuleJul 23, 2010
Net Neutrality has nothing to do with this.

Liberal 'ends justifies the means' tactics, beautiful. Forget an honest discussion of issues, instead lie, pretend to be someone else, do whatever you have to to reach your goals, because your goals, you beliefs are more important than everyone elses. No censorship here, just no one wants to give such a scummy stunt airtime.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

It's parody, lighten up. Just because you don't agree with their viewpoint, doesn't mean it's not humorous.
And maybe we should ask ACORN or Shirley Sherrod about how conservatives try to get people to agree with their viewpoint. Now those are some "scummy stunts."
asimpledadJul 23, 2010
So we lift up the discussion by allowing things to sink to the lowest level? It wasn't a parody, they were pretending to be someone they weren't, not to highlight lameness on the other parties part, but to confuse the issue and misrepresent them. Clean coal is bulls**t, and they could have made a humorous point, but all they did was pretend they were someone else and pretended to speak in their name. That's just a dick thing to do.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

altorJul 24, 2010
I watched the whole thing and felt embarrassed on their behalf. It would've been impressive if they hadn't been caught and the story got picked up by some news networks or something.
Instead, they get shut down half-way through a press conference in which they say, "We, *fingerquotes* the government */fingerquotes* have decided to reverse decades of policy decisions because... uh... (mumble mumble...)". Only maybe 20 reporters were actually gullible enough to attend apparently, and I didn't recognize any of the names of the news organizations they were supposedly representing.
Then, finally, at the end a single reporter tries to sort out the clusterfail and the guy's like, "uh... well... uh... gosh I was hoping I wouldn't have to justify my position on any of this... uh... can I get back to you? I need to take my social anxiety pills, this is too much pressure coming from one young female reporter not even making eye contact."
Weak, just weak.

http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2007/07/research-optimal-copyright-term-is-14-years.ars
As far as copyright goes, I'd like to see a "Copyright Plan B", one where the artist would
not be tied down to the regular copyright, which is continually being extended by corporations
like Disney.
So, if someone applied for "Plan B", and said that they wanted it to last 15 years, after
that amount of time, no matter what happened to the traditional copyright law,
the copyright piece would enter the public domain.
phpadamAug 4, 2010
I watched it, its confusing and has no plot.
Now for Toy Story..
