The would not work. The 25 pin to 9 pin adapter would not work with the parallel port and the USB device could not talk to the parallel port. Also there would be no driver to interpret the signal from the parallel port even if there was a signal.
Although once I did see a user with an original IBM XT keyboard connected to an XT to PS/2 adapter, connected to a PS/2 to USB adapter.
nepidaeAug 12, 2010
How do you know know there would be no driver?
jantikAug 12, 2010

"Although once I did see a user with an original IBM XT keyboard connected to an XT to PS/2 adapter, connected to a PS/2 to USB adapter."
I have an old AMD K5 sitting in the corner, setup exactly like that.
And just an FYI: Finding an XT to PS/2 adapter is almost impossible these days.
suricouAug 12, 2010
Finding the pinouts is not. I have a soldering iron.

@CaptOblivious
AT & XT keyboards are not compatible, despite having the same connector.
captobliviousAug 13, 2010
Picky picky, Ok you got me, it's "AT"at to "ps2".
HOWEVER, his amd K5 is motherboard most assuredly NOT using the XT protocol and has the standard plug which is the same connector as the xt, and those adapters WILL work just fine.
jbmcbAug 12, 2010
It's possible:
DB25 -> DB25 (Parallel to serial converter)
DB25 -> Serial DB9 (Serial connector adapter)
DB9 -> Mini-DIN 8 (Serial to PS/2 converter, used in old computers with no PS/2 ports)
Mini-DIN 8 -> USB (PS/2 to USB adapter, bundled with most mice)
bonestampAug 12, 2010
For one thing, the USB -> 8 pin is an adapter, not a converter, so it only works with devices designed to run as PS/2 devices. A USB drive would not work.
jbmcbAug 12, 2010
Oh, right. Good point :)
So it would theoretically work with a mouse that comes with an adapter...

You can probably swing *anything* with Linux.
patman21Aug 12, 2010
where's the power coming from though?
skektekAug 12, 2010
@patman21
Bingo, you win a cookie.
There is no power output power.
jbmcbAug 12, 2010
@skektek:
An old hack is to keep a data (or DTR) line high on a parallel/serial port to provide power. The parallel to serial adapter would have to do this, which it may not, but the serial to PS/2 adapter absolutely does this, as it's required for the mouse to work.
calcprogrammer1Aug 15, 2010
The DB25-DB25 is most likely a null modem, not a parallel/serial converter. A null modem just reverses cable ends (for DB25 serial, not parallel, there were serial ports that used the DB25 connector but only used 9 pins on it).

lucutusAug 13, 2010
This may be fake but is theoretically possible. It comes down to pin outs, wire count and a driver.
Each one of the adapter types has enough pins to handle a USB device. (Only four conductors required)
BD25 to USB converters work fine for USB 1.1 spec.
There is no obvious reason this daisy chain couldn't work.
And for that USB PS/2 adapter there is a mouse, KB, etc... driver available.
xkorbinAug 13, 2010
Anything can be done on the parallel port with the exception of the power.
This is ABSOLUTELY possible in Windows or Linux provided you write the correct driver for USB, and have a DTR or other external source of power (a hub actually would work, if it were powered) on the line
harrypowersAug 13, 2010

Butt hurt apple fanboys since Giz bought a lost iphone 4, made an attempt to return it but were ignored then leaked the iphone 4.
spacemanspiff22Aug 12, 2010
No, the real pathetic part of that story was how they tracked down and leaked the details about the guy who lost it making his life hell for no reason whatsoever. And don't forget the time they went to that electronics expo and turned off all kinds of devices with a universal remote cause they thought it was funny.
Most of the junk there can be traced back to Jesus Diaz, who attacks people who comment anything even remotely negative about his drivel or just deletes the comments. My personal favorite was the post he made with Jobs in a stupid position with the text "full bars" on it, which someone immediately pointed out in the comments as being suggested by another user. Yet he gigantically watermarked his stupid name in the corner like a jackass.
This of course was when I used to read the site. I can honestly say I haven't opened the page once in at least a month and don't plan to, either. Engadget is far better in every way. Basically Gizmodo is the kind of stereotypically immature, pointless blog that is holding back the format being considered legitimate news sources.

skurtAug 12, 2010
I hear you, my HP 5mp chugs right along just fine thankyouverymuch.
areallygoodnameAug 12, 2010
Just follow the chain of impossibility.
Stage 1. In the back of that computer it has a DB25 parallel port. It is not a DB25 serial port. A parallel port is wired completely differently to an RS232 port and uses almost all the pins a DB25 can provide.
Stage 2. Plugged into that DB25 parallel port is either a null modem or a gender changer (both can look identical externally). A null modem is designed to wire serial ports in a certain way, it could never work with a parallel port. A DB25 gender changer would allow the parallel port signals through.
Stage 3. Plugged into that null modem or gender changer is a DB25 to DB9 adapter. Here is where it absolutely fails. A parallel port needs all the signals. For a start you're going to lose ground here (pin 18 on a parallel port). There is no way for a signal to even get past this point if it hasn't been stopped already.
Stage 4. Serial to PS2 adapter - not a converter. These serial to PS2 adapters do no conversion. They are designed for old mice that have both serial and PS2 functionality internally with a PS2 connector standard on the mouse. The mouse itself would detect if it was plugged into a PS2 port straight up or a serial port (via the adapter) and would do the conversion internally. That adapter doesn't actually convert, it relies on the peripheral it is connected to for that. So even if signals got to this point they'd be blocked here.
Stage 5. A PS2 to USB adapter. Again these are not converters. You can't plug any USB device into this and have it work via your PS2 port. It is designed for mice that internally auto-detect and support either a PS2 or USB connection. Again even if the signals got to this point they'd be blocked.

xboxsosmartAug 12, 2010

homercles337Aug 12, 2010
Stage 6. A USB device. The parallel port doesn't supply power in the first place. Again it fails.
That was all you needed. No power to the USB device, no work.
grimwardAug 12, 2010

snakedal337Aug 12, 2010
Stage 7. We'll initiate a kick.. at that point were pretty deep in. A power surge would probably be our best bet.
catalysisAug 12, 2010
Well, technically it could provide +5V power if one of the signal pins' bit state was set to 1.
somehyjinxAug 12, 2010
On top of the absurdity of the physical connection itself, I like the doctored screen shot of the device manager. CSC0101A would only connect to a USB port, not parallel or serial.
The CSC0101A device allows a PS/2 device to use Usb, but not the other way around. And it's only USB 1.1 compliant for HIDs and the picture shows a USB 2.0 storage device.
invaderprotosAug 13, 2010
Stage 7: I sleep with your wife.
Check the corners, bro.
xkorbinAug 13, 2010
Power could easily be supplied by chaining in a powered hub.
The real problem is that DB25 connector and the port itself; writing an adapter to complement the pinouts really isn't that difficult for someone with technical experience to pull off.
sniper117Aug 13, 2010
You sir, have won the gold medal nerd award.
meccaydnaAug 17, 2010
I was hoping there'd be a faux wire (or pair) leading from the case to some point in the adapter chain. Then at the very least he could have said "well I attached new signals" and lied about it.
Of course it kindof defeats the purpose in taking two of the four conductors and wiring them directly to the mobo. But still...

Those old Dell Poweredge servers, I had 2 that I jacked from my dad, not sure where he got them. But I decided it would be a good idea to load ubuntu server on both and serve media from them to my comp/ps3/xbox360, so i stacked them in the closet (still stupid loud with those damn fans) so I ripped out two of the fans on each, figured theres only 2 and if I left a little bit of the casing of there'd be enough airflow. Anyways as you can guess, that didn't quite work out so well when I smelt something burning and went in to the closet and they'd been burning into the shelf they were sitting on. Then went to see if they were still working or if they were fried, surprisingly enough they were apparently they exhaust a lot of heat to the frame.

1) Parallel to Serial doesn't work, unless he's got some hardware in that thing and/or some weird driver. More likely it's just a 25-pin serial to 9-pin serial with a gender changer (the grey box closest to the machine)
2) PS2-to-USB only works for keyboards, and only with some machine/keyboard combinations built to handle it.

THEY CAN TRAVEL IN TIME IN HARRY POTTER -- WHY NOT GO BACK AND KILL VOLDEMORT?!!!!!

"AReallyGoodName" above provides a fully comprehensive list of why this wouldn't work, but I could just think of two simple reasons:
1: Parallel ports don't provide power - USBs provide 5 volts or so which USB gadgets need to run. Parallel stuff usually has it's own power source.
2: Those green converters are for mice only. I know from experience that the purple ones are for keyboards only and the green for mice only. They only work with those exact peripherals, and only if the peripherals themselves support the adapters. You can't plug a random USB thing in it and expect it to work.

There are 2 free USB ports on the left side of that impossible and ridiculous contraption. why not use them?

As soon as I saw the USB I thought "How the f**k is it getting power?!"
But yeah, i'm not THAT old school. I can only figure out about 3 links down the chain. The two closest are before me.

USB ports are precious. You can never have too many of them.

It wouldn't work, and the drive lights up orange. Do I get my automatic thumbs-up for my insightful redundant comment?
I think I have one of all those gender-benders at home, and I definitely have a Cruzer. LOL
