sgerwel1985Jul 29, 2010
Times change and the things people want and need are different now than they were 5 years ago, forget even looking back 20 years ago. Before phones were made for calling, that's it. Now you have email, social networking, texting... you can go on and on.
smokeydabearJul 29, 2010
I don't think people really care about the size changes, they are just enthralled with mobile phones.
tarantulusJul 29, 2010
as they f**king well should be... people are too complacent about the awesome power of tech nowadays.
gurukidJul 29, 2010
I never understood why so much of today's technology is based around "the pocket". Pockets haven't really changed in decades (if not centuries).
Before the cell phone, pockets were meant to carry wallets and keys. Front pockets (on shirts) were for fountain pens and handkerchiefs.
Isn't it time we fit some of our clothing to match our tech rather than the other way around?
Example: keyboard pants: http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/23/keyboard-infused-pants-make-it-okay-to-grab-your-crotch/
sageerrantJul 29, 2010
I was with you right up to the keyboard pants.

And the ladies have purses for a reason. Not that they actually want a Droid X, Evo, or Streak.
pabstyloudmouthJul 29, 2010
The is one reason for this, a 2" screen is really hard to fap to.
CallMeDjmJul 29, 2010
Or maybe not really hard at all.
I'll show myself out.

strangehumorJul 30, 2010
Don't you f**king make my contacts more expensive then they already are.
jdmulloyJul 29, 2010
That's why I love my Palm Pre, it's tiny and fits nicely in my pocket. I'm actually hoping they increase the screen size just a little bit on the next phone they produce. The iPhone is about the right size, any bigger and it's just too bulky. When I got my Nokia N800 I had the idea that I would always carry it around in my pocket, but it was just too darn big. The EVO isn't quite that large and not as thick, but it's pretty close. The N900 is probably a little bit better than the N800 but still way too big, plus it has a resistive screen.
dsmith5237Jul 29, 2010
Most of today's phones aren't meant to be carried in pockets. The pressure and stress of being in a pocket wrecks phones as well as any gadget with a screen, especially a touch screen, or moving parts.
grizzleytJul 29, 2010
Don't be silly. Any designer or engineer worth his salt knows that many people carry phones in their pockets, and to design the phone for that environment. I've never heard of someone's pocket wrecking a phone.
nicko68Jul 29, 2010
But then what's the fun of setting your phone on vibrate, putting it in your front pocket, and calling yourself over, and over, and over... :)
thisismissJul 29, 2010
ive had an iphone for about 2 years and i almost always have it in my pocket, and it's still in fine shape...well apart from where i dropped it and cracked the case. but no pocket related damages
gr00verJul 29, 2010
Is that a phone in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
vspe0000Jul 29, 2010
It's true, all of my pockets have been blown out by my iPhone.

tehrabJul 29, 2010
I won't be happy until my phone is as large as a 55" LED TV and as heavy as a full desktop tower with quad SLI, dual hexacore CPUs, 64GB of RAM, 4x2TB drives, redundant 1200W PSUs and a massive liquid cooling reservoir.
Ideally, I should need to enlist the services of a Sherpa to use my phone.

"The other potential issue with large phones is that it can be difficult to hold them up to your face, depending how big your hands are and if your arms are strong."
If your arms are strong? I think if your arms are too weak to hold a phone to your ear, then you shouldn't really be using one at all.
v3rtex7740Jul 30, 2010
Or using it everyday?
explodingzebrasJul 31, 2010
Just make sure you use your fapping hand.
sugarazorJul 29, 2010
When people realize it's f**king stupid to try to watch movies on a cell phone, this trend will fix itself.
reaper527Jul 29, 2010
but the fact the phones are able to play more and more graphically intensive games will keep the trend alive. so will web browsing.
i wouldn't be surprised to see the trend split, resulting in a choice between big phones and ultra small phones, with nothing in the middle, but the large phone trend isn't going anywhere. especially since the iphone and droidx have both managed to sell so well.
rikfJul 29, 2010
Mr Lynch? Is that really you?
sugarazorJul 29, 2010
David Lynch was spot on. IT'S A f**kING PHONE! That new Samsung that advertises the "complete cinema experience" is f**king insulting.
luke1h7Jul 29, 2010
Why is it a stupid trend? Because you say so? Who are you and why does your opinion matter?
Thank you and goodnight.
catchpenJul 29, 2010
I miss my StarTAC.
coxonJul 29, 2010
In Japan the last two years the trend has been bigger and bigger phones. Makes sense because they are used more for data than voice.
explodingzebrasJul 31, 2010
and they get live TV on their phones
jeffdabeatJul 29, 2010
I've used the EVO and as amazing as that phone is, it's just too big. I like that we are exploring the limits of how big we want our screens and it will be consolidated folks decide whether a phone is too big or not big enough.
I used to think a 4.3 inch screen would be amazing, until I held it in my hand. Just too big for my liking. But, everyone has different tasts in phones.
adrnshw6Jul 29, 2010
I was kind of worried when I bought an EVO that it would be too big, but after using it for about a month, I can tell you that size is not a problem, at least with male jeans and shorts. It may be tall and wide, but it's fairly skinny, and that is what makes a big difference.
ascosisJul 30, 2010
Odd, the size has never bothered me with my Evo. I've never had trouble putting it in my pocket and honestly wouldn't be able to go back to a smaller screen now.
grizzleytJul 29, 2010
Phone sizes aren't going to get out of control. Any phone that is too big to carry or use won't sell, and most companies are aware enough of ergonomic issues to avoid such a plight to begin with.
It is funny, though; I remember reading a review of the RazrV3 that said it was too wide. All of these smart phones are much wider. Perhaps our tolerances for phone dimensions are increasing as we start to prefer rich content.
freeridstyleeJul 29, 2010
In a year or 2 phones will come with murses.
zsaviorJul 29, 2010
Stop wearing tiny to tight Hipster jeans and you would be able to carry your cell phone with you. I see dudes my age, in children's pants and jeans they can barely fit their own finger in their pocket. It's not the phone that are the problem it is the pants.
Second if you don't want a large phone stop buying phones to watch movies and take 720 video on. Doing that kind of thing will not be size friendly to your needs, with out warping the laws of physics.
geekvolcanoJul 29, 2010
I just hide my phone in my mullet.
serif69Jul 30, 2010
Do you keep your BlackBerry in the front and your enV in the rear?
ouijacatJul 29, 2010
Why is it taking so damned long to develop a wearable wrist-phone (like the one Dick Tracy had in the 1960s)???
jspegeleJul 29, 2010
It's not.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua7nK91d3SM
carlososJul 30, 2010
Just search on youtube for "watch phone" and you will find many videos of people showing the different watch phones that exist. For most of them you have to buy them from some Chinese import website.
explodingzebrasJul 31, 2010
who the hell wants a watch phone? What if you accidently answer a call while you are fapping/wiping?
ethana2Jul 29, 2010
I wanted a computer when I got my Droid, not a phone. Now that 10" Android tablets are starting to come out, like the Notion Ink Adam, I'll be able to get what I really wanted in the first place. I find I drop my Incredible a TON less than I ever dropped my Droid, so I think there's really a weight limit on phones before they get awkward and you end up dropping them a lot.
luke1h7Jul 29, 2010
You don't have to get a smart phone.
antdudeJul 30, 2010
Or a cellphone. I don't own either. :)
jabbrwockeyJul 30, 2010
Or a computer. Abacuses work perfectly well you know.
aminy23Jul 29, 2010
I like big phones, I have huge hands and pockets, and I hate tiny touchscreen keyboards. I tried out some bigger phones like the HD2, and the touchscreen is quite usable for me. Since I was 12, my friends and I could comfortable fit our Sony PSPs in our pockets when we went to school, so it is just the thickness of phones that bothers me. Thick phones bulge like crazy, but big thin phones don't really show in my pockets. As long as a phone is not much bigger than a PSP, I am happy.
thatnerdygirlJul 29, 2010
Women's pants pockets suck for carrying ANYTHING. I have to take the case off my Droid to even get it to slide into my pocket. Even then it kind of bulges out awkwardly.
Unfortunately "I'm just happy to see you" wouldn't make sense coming from me.
carlososJul 30, 2010
Get some women cargo pants. I'm sure they have bigger pockets and most women look good in them (at least in my opinion).
sweetchinmusicJul 29, 2010
No, that's not a phone in my pocket.
rezzedoutJul 30, 2010
In other news, dildos are still getting longer and thicker...
nygenxerJul 30, 2010
