Not a fan of the tablet form-factor. I'm as unlikely to buy this as an iPad or any other tablet. Still... They're starting to look downright usable.
I will give oodles of money to the first company that comes up with a single device I can use as a phone (of the hold-to-my-ear variety) and a writing machine (of the comfortable-to-type-on variety). I'm not holding my breath.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
ell0boJun 30, 2010
oxymoron?
gooddamonJun 30, 2010
Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting something like that to actually happen (hence the "not holding my breath" comment). But wouldn't it be awesome if someone came up with something that did a good job of both tasks?
And while I'm making fanciful wishes, how about a rocket launcher that shoots unicorns?
ell0boJun 30, 2010
now that's a pipe dream I can get behind!
honoredmuleJun 30, 2010
How about a rocket launcher that shoots unicorns?
If you supply the unicorns, I'm pretty sure any standard-issue rocket launcher can shoot them.

Nokia N900.
areallygoodnameJun 30, 2010
Hell yes! The n900 is the first phone I've ever had that has nothing to piss me off.
It doesn't require a software suite installed on my computer to sync to my computer - It's got options for standard active sync and Google calendar exchange sync. In fact it doesn't even need to be plugged in via USB for syncing, as soon as it logs into the network via wireless it does the sync. It can support file transfers as a USB drive or it can provide an SMB share to the network, so it's easy to copy media and play it (f**k requiring itunes or any other special app just to copy media across).
It supports Skype and SIP VOIP out of the box and treats them as part of the phone/messaging stack so when i get into work it logs onto the wireless and picks up the Skype calls/messages as if they were a phone call/message (f**k all of those s**tty dedicated Skype phones).
It's graphics and CPU are awesome for a phone
(before complaining that its CPU is only 600Mhz look here and see its Cortex-A8 CPU has twice as many MIPs per Mhz as an xScale or similar) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_architecture
There's downloadable codec packs for it so it can play anything (it does struggle with 1080p but hey i can go without HD on a 4" screen).
It's screen and keyboard were rated the best on a phone over at Anandtech recently. I agree. The screen is usable outdoors and the keyboard is better than you'd expect on that form factor.
Lastly the official forums provide support on how to get root and install all your favorite emulators (no re-flash is required, it's an option provided straight up, Nokia are happy for people to use the phone how they want).
/I honestly don't work for Nokia i just really like the phone.

And of course, the emulators are available from the official Market:

Sounds like you need the HTC Evo 4G (4.3 inch display) or Droid X (4.3 inch well) or even the Dell Streak, but if you really need a keyboard then there's the Motorola Droid 2.
gooddamonJun 30, 2010
I'm a writer. Thumb keyboards aren't any good for that.
Let's be honest... What I want doesn't exist, and probably can't exist. A usable writing keyboard just won't fit in a phone-sized device.
But the more I think about it, the more I want that unicorn rocket launcher. I'm pretty sure those splatters would be rainbow-colored, and taste like happiness.
russ3Jun 30, 2010
3g netbook + bluetooth headphones + voip, if you feel like using your 5gigs of data all on voice
nullcodesJun 30, 2010
how about carrying around one of those bluetooth wireless foldable or pocket keyboards? keep the evo 4G or droid 2 or even the 5 inch dell streak in one pocket and the keyboard in the other? some of the nokia smartphones even have a kickstand in back.
ryanschmidtJun 29, 2010
Am I the only one that doesn't really appreciate this type of marketing ploy?
tehpunkprodigyJun 30, 2010
what "ploy" are you speaking of exactly?
theaceoffireJul 1, 2010
Making things and offering them for sale.
bdbrJun 30, 2010
Are you suggesting that the poster joined Digg 2 years ago and submitted 598 other posts on various topics just for the "ploy" of posting this one marketing anouncement?
Closed AccountJun 29, 2010
man this should be on the cover of WIRED
eshinnJun 30, 2010
For biggest yawn-factor?
psychoaceJun 30, 2010
Weird because Cisco sold Apple the Iphone name after Apple announced the Iphone?
Closed AccountJun 30, 2010
Not to mention they licensed them the iOS name for the ipad
doshindudeJun 30, 2010
They gotta come up with better names if they ever want to compete with Apple. Cius? Seriously?
Also, they also kinda gotta actually release these things too. I always see articles like this about them, actually put the damn thing on the market!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
jhochbergJun 30, 2010
Really? Because iPad required so much thought....
eshinnJun 30, 2010
I still wish they'd called it the iSlate. iPad just makes me sound like some Jerk in Jersey talking about his iPod.
xmascarol7Jun 30, 2010
They don't want to compete with Apple. They're Cisco. They go after the market that actually matters that nobody ever hears about: big businesses.
Case in point: how often have you considered buying a telepresence setup at your local best-buy? Yet, how much does Cisco make off of telepresence?
Closed AccountJun 30, 2010
You said it, my thoughts exactly. I work in a pretty large enterprise, we have some very intriguing ideas for tablet use in our facilities. To date I can't find a tablet that is light enough, easy enough to use, and is centrally manageable. The iPad is really a nice device, but no centralized management and no way to lock it down. The Win7 based tablets suck ass. Something tells me a Cisco tablet will at some point be something that can be centrally managed - it IS Cisco after all - the enterprise *is* their market.
jhochbergJun 30, 2010
Right on target. The medical industry loves the idea of the iPad, but without any options for strong authentication it is useless.
At least the Cisco tablet has a camera built-in and could potentially be used for facial recognition as strong auth.
Tablets will be everywhere once someone solves the security issues surrounding them.
According to big Stevie there's nothing wrong with the iPad and it's very secure. Yeah...right.

True, their hardware is spectacular, but the software built for it is a pain in the ass. Their CallManager/Unified Communications software is a bitch to configure, especially if you want to have unified communications (Presence).
User setup: Login to the CM server, go to user management, import/add the user, save, add user to proper groups via groups pop-up, save, go to the phone management, add the phone, save, go to the specific phone, configure the phone, save, go to the extension management for the phone, configure the extension, save, associate the user to the extension, save, go to the licensing menu, allocate the licenses to allow Unified Communications, save, login to the Presence server, search for new user, enable UC for that user, save, login to the Unity Messaging server, import/add user to database, associate extension, and save.
They should have some kind of management wizard to add and remove users: Add/Remove?, name, extension, department, manager, (or all of that could be pointed to in Active Directory), any secondary lines?, which UC options, click "Create."
usahnaimJun 30, 2010
upgrade to 8.0. it's simplified...
eshinnJun 30, 2010
That chick's dimple is the largest I'd ever seen.
nullcodesJun 30, 2010
I don't understand what's weird about this. But I am guessing the specs are going to be crap, as in it will have a junk CPU and be overpriced.. still not bad.

eshinnJun 30, 2010
That's a great marketing angle. "The best crap in tablet-form around!"
bdbrJun 30, 2010
Cisco sells to the enterprise business market. Its not going to be crap, but it will definitely be overpriced.
nullcodesJun 30, 2010
have u seen what kind of pc's get sold to the enterprise business market? Netbook level power in a laptop for the price of a desktop.
psychoaceJun 30, 2010
It's said to have a 1.6ghz atom cpu (Ipad is 1ghz) and since it's a business tablet I agree it probably will be expensive but you got to remember your getting two camea's on this device and not 0 like the Ipad.
footbag01Jun 30, 2010
Apple had a light-show to introduce the iPad. Cisco has a webinar with slideshow.

Would you buy one if we had big titty women dancing around? I would! LOL
thecoffeeJun 30, 2010
Can those women flash?
bizchrisJun 30, 2010
These comments suck, but the tablet seems awesome. The first Android tablet I've seriously considered purchasing.
zbeastJun 30, 2010
This is a great idea and being that cisco owns webex they can use that as a total business integration system.
rocketsJun 30, 2010
Are the Apple fanboys sleeping? What a lack of flames !!!
Oh, that's right, they are struggling with the [non-existing] iPhone4 antenna problem and having an existential dilema.
d_udeJun 30, 2010
Next series of 24 will have Jack yelling into one of these. I bet even the terrorists will be using TelePresence by then.
balancedJun 30, 2010
I think they've canceled 24.
hotcoffee15Jul 1, 2010
yea, 24 is over man. I think they might be making a movie sometime in the future though. <3jackiebow
pocketjacksJun 30, 2010
The video looked like she nearly started cracking up and blew another take about ten times.
There were some serious tongue twisters...and they're harder to say when they're mindless buzz words.
nonamesleftJun 30, 2010
Well, the lack of any decent photos shows this is not a product aimed at the general consumer, this is an enterprise device. I'm glad to see that Android is their choice of OS, rather than Win 7, which although a decent OS is not an OS for tablets (despite what MS might say). This comes from an Apple owner, but one who has avoided the iPhone/iPad/iCrap and gone for Android instead (hey, I like OS X for its UNIX underpinnings and use the command line often, did not buy it for stupid iLife crap).
viperx77Jun 30, 2010
It looked like a dent!
chrispix99Jun 30, 2010
Not to mention that the Enterprise can then roll out custom android applications on the tablets, bypassing apple.
harleyquinnJun 30, 2010
Nothing weird about it. Like Microsoft's entrenchment in the business world, so shall Cisco follow. Since Steve is not calling the shots as to what YOU or your Sysadmin's can do with it, the potential is huge. When the iPad came out there was talk of its business potential, hospitals, etc. However, this Cisco device will most certainly be the better fit in those environments. Built on an OPEN platform.
With Cisco selling routers, switches, VoIP, and firewalls/VPNs to hospitals, business, the 'integration' potential is huge, as is the sales potential.
The iPad will continue to simply be a "Toy".
doublebaconsodaJun 30, 2010
That stupid x-box 360 ad prevents me from moving the page until the black animation completely runs its course. Stupid ad

"Help your employees stay connected to their work, increase productivity, and reduce costs."
As if Blackberries weren't enough, now employers are going to expect people to be available to video-conference 24 hours a day.

I think one of the reasons they bought Flip is to simplify the GUI's for business end users and consumers.
oldoaktreeJun 30, 2010
Why the product or video show is f**kin small???? Too embarass to show???? then don't show, at all!!!!!
This is one big reason why no one can compete with Apple in enticing customer.

Gah, screw all the ads for the Cisco Cius.. It is an ugly useless waste of money. Cisco needs to stop making crap and focus on what made them Cisco to begin with.
