Most of these are common sense but it is amazing how people still make these mistakes.
legalskepticAug 17, 2010
"Avoid torrent sites at all costs" should read "Avoid public torrent sites at all costs." Private torrent sites aren't perfect, and a couple of the bigger XXX ones have gotten virusy lately, but they're much safer than public torrents.
stuntaneousAug 18, 2010
can't maintain decent ratios with s**thouse australian capped net. stuck on public.

The single password one has been proven wrong through various studies, it's a waste of time
imabananaAug 18, 2010
uuhm.. link to "various studies"?
Because this is what is happening to many, many people:
1; You sign up to some site with your email, and your emails password,
2; The site you signed up to does not encrypt its database (properly),
3; The site admin is malicious / the website gets hacked / its a phishing site,
4; All email addresses and passwords are attempted at the email providers,
5; They hack in your email, because your email password was the same as the one you on that site,
6; They search your email for banks, and money services such as Paypal,
7; They login to that the bank site, and steal all your money

Please bury this advertisement for Cyberdefender. Not to mention it has a lot of stupid suggestions. There are plenty of ways of torrenting safely regardless of whether the material you're downloading is pirated or not. Number one being using private torrent sites instead of public ones, and also only downloading torrents with good ratings and positive comments.
The only one I really agreed with completely is not using one password for all of your accounts. Very easy way for someone to ruin your entire life if they manage to snag your email account pw or something.
tacodog76Aug 18, 2010
Just as I was reading this I was thinking, "Haha, what suckers don't already know all this?" I then went on my Facebook account and found that my account had recently been accessed from Indonesia. s**t.
monodedeAug 18, 2010
How'd you find out where it was accessed from?
s0nicfreakAug 18, 2010
Facebook tells you.
tacodog76Aug 18, 2010
And then after Facebook tells you, you have to do a quiz where you have to match one of your friends names to a person in a particular picture about 5 times. One wrong answer and Facebook blocks you from the site.
sfventurerAug 18, 2010
The one the is the most sensible as the most dangerous is the using the same password for all the sites you visit. Because eventually some Admin of a website will look into your user password and try using it for e-mail accounts and from their they have access to everything of yours.
quantumcipherAug 18, 2010
This is true.
Solution: Use a unique (strong) password for your e-mail or any sensitive accounts. Use the same (easy to remember) password for everything else.
4ndr01dAug 18, 2010
dont use windows or IE to browse
antdudeAug 18, 2010
What if employer requires them and can't install and no USB connections? :P
leftamiAug 18, 2010
Employers problem? Therefore the previous advice of public computers is sound, is it not?
schneidz101Aug 18, 2010
my employer makes us use ie6.

Most dangerous: using Windows.
elranzerAug 18, 2010
More Dangerous: Think simply by using Mac OS X you're safe.

"Avoid bittorrent. Piracy is bad. Pay for porn."
Someone has a guilty conscience. Now excuse me while I go torrent some free porn.... maybe a celebrity sex tape.
tomgfromcanadaAug 18, 2010
torrents are not dangerous if you know what you are doing.

diggbotnessAug 18, 2010
There are plenty of free porn sites similar to youtube with no malware. Paying for porn is ridiculous.
kazbotAug 18, 2010
So yeah... how about that CyberDefender? Gizmodo only left out that it cures leprosy and is made from 100% organic unicorn balls.
zombiesocietyAug 18, 2010
When I go to the library and people leave their accounts logged in on the catalog computers, I reserve embarrassing books in their name. That way, when they go to check something out, the lady also hands them A Two-Way Survival Guide for Lesbians and Gay Men and Their Parents, for no apparent reason. Like "here, I know you need this."

beesknees21Aug 18, 2010
I always use noscript in firefox and only allow scripts on pages I am sure are safe. If I have to visit a site I'm unsure about then I check it on the mcafee site advisor. Other than that, the rest is pretty common sense.
sfventurerAug 18, 2010
I dunno why you got dugg down, but I do the same thing as you with no-script. Only allowing script I trust really helps prevent malware and adware.
halsfieldAug 21, 2010
Maybe dugg down for mcafee?
antdudeAug 18, 2010
Don't Digg. :P

Dugg! I was about to comment "Don't comment on Digg".

knobbysideupAug 18, 2010
For christina ricci, just download after.life. She's nude for pretty much the entire movie.

One of the best guides I've ever read for keeping safe online is Steal This Computer Book - teaches you a hell of a lot about the various threats online, including not just basic safety, but also about things like censorship and privacy, and is a really interesting read too.

Keeping single password for all online accounts helps in a great deal for remembering your password.
