It's funny how quickly the XKCD map has become obsolete. The giant Myspace Kingdom just looks jarring now.
sipsyrupAug 7, 2010
It was raped and pillaged by the Facebook Empire.
titaniumwarriorAug 6, 2010
Not shown, the massive, throbbing, super-continent of Porn sites.
maxtheman36Aug 6, 2010
It's just north of the Sea of Master Debaters, south of the sea of Desperation.... where porn belongs
socks777Aug 6, 2010
nice use of "throbbing"
dlan4327Aug 7, 2010
It's a whole other planet.
sil369Aug 7, 2010

jaaamesAug 7, 2010
Porn is the star around which the Internet revolves. One day, it will go supernova and turn into a supermassive black hole. A supermassive black hole needs filling... with a supermassive black c**k.
This map shows neither, and thus is a shoddy representation at best.

Fail for lack of 4chan. Love it or hate it, it's the small but trend-defining spot that plays a major role in shaping the internet.
Come to think of it, it's the Japan of the interwebs.
lukas1051Aug 7, 2010
And full of some of the weirdest most horrifying s**t and strangest cultures you'll find anywhere.
Just like Japan actually.

nihilistfornotAug 7, 2010
rules 1 and 2
nard3456Aug 7, 2010
everyone knows about 4chan. 1&2 only apply to /b/ and raids
jaaamesAug 7, 2010
This is the first time I've heard of these 'raids' and gave a f**k to retort. You, sir, have broken your two most sacred commandments as a lowly innanet-dweller.

fieldhockey44Aug 6, 2010
It's the island just northeast of the map title (in the south Pacific ocean)
emepantsAug 7, 2010
Digg is on there. Find Twitter on the map and then look down.

Based on traffic surveys, the ocean pretty much IS bittorrent. The *entire* ocean.

They should have hand lettered it. That gave the xkcd map a lot of charm.
The XKCD map was also not just a map of "social networks" but rather of "online communities" which is a much different thing.

They have officially grown to 48 sites to this day. So I guess they have completed the continental sites, now all they need to do is buy out 2 more image macro sites and it will finally be complete?

feverhostAug 6, 2010
That is awesome... great post.
appleofdischordAug 7, 2010
So funny, sea of desperation because only desperate people go to online dating sites instead of sleazy bars. It's so much less desperate to go home with a person you barely know than to find someone with common interests and beliefs and then strike up a conversation with them.
Not to mention they left out OkCupid.
thescientist213Aug 7, 2010
Strike a chord?
appleofdischordAug 7, 2010
It's an overplayed stereotype. I met my girlfriend through online dating. I'm much happier than I've been with anyone I've met through "normal" channels.

How come there are so many comments here about the lack of Digg on the map? It's pretty visible, it's just North-East of the label "The 2010 Social Networking Map".
brothercheAug 7, 2010
Subtle, yet brilliant
craznarAug 7, 2010
But soon, will attach itself to the continent south of Facebook, when it changes to the State of Digg v4.

I must be going blind, all I see is "Digsby", which is a chat client...
Digsby /= Digg
Closed AccountAug 18, 2010
OK WTF, it's gone. I swear to god it was there - it was definitely a separate island to Digsby, because I noticed that the two were there as separate islands. I bet they included Digg just while this article was on the front page to keep us Diggers happy...
Digg was a small island all by itself just north-east of the map caption when I saw the map. I'll have a look in my browser cache to see if I can find the version with Digg on it.
I swear I'm not going mad...!
Closed AccountAug 18, 2010
I've had some success - I found a version of the map that someone rearranged to make into more of a world-map shape. The person who did it obviously took the map when Digg was still on there - see here:

melikbilgeAug 7, 2010
The Pirate Bay should have been on there, a ship with skull and bones in the oceans between these continents.
