Dugg for bonsai kitty.
haikufuAug 12, 2010
I ordered mine years ago and never received it. So I made my own. They are in clear flower pots on the steps in front of my house and I just water them a little every day.
It's nice to come home to the purring sound.

misterfawkesAug 12, 2010
Actually I kind of did, too :(

Recycling is only good when it's done to tangible things like aluminum cans, not s**tty lists about internet hoaxes...

Oh, come on- what about that dying kid who needed emails/postcards/etc to break some world record?
That thing circulated for *years* in the early days of the internet

I would say #1 is that guy from Nigeria who has money for me.
4rp4n3tAug 12, 2010
That's an email scam rather than a internet hoax.
rypic7Aug 12, 2010
Um... He's a prince... He obviously has the money...?
naasukAug 12, 2010
I never understood how people could believe Bonzai Kitty.
riverstyxAug 12, 2010
Back when the site was up, it used to play a soundbyte of a cat meowing as soon as it finished loading..we were still on dialup though, so it took forever. Rotten.com took on the hosting responsibility for it since no one else wanted to. I'd say this was the best hoax ever, since it was on CNN and everywhere else, and there was thousands upon thousands of hatemails posted, also bear in mind that they even fooled the FBI. Very well played ;-)
particleman420Aug 12, 2010
i thought it was rotten's hoax
4rp4n3tAug 12, 2010
I think that says more about the intelligence of those particular FBI agents than the voracity of the hoax. So obviously shooped - I can see the pixels etc.
jdinkelAug 12, 2010
I don't know how, but they did believe it and it was huge for a long time. To me Bonzai Kitty should be the top of the list. In fact, I think some on the list could be replaced by much better hoaxes.
I was just disappointed that I couldn't actually get a Bonzai Kitty.

8.) HOPA Girl
riverstyxAug 12, 2010
Dont expect much of a career for Hopa Girl in Hollywood, now that the smoke has cleared. Lonelygirl15 was also just an aspiring actress, and when's the last time we heard from her?
smemilyAug 12, 2010
And LisaNova... they even let her on MadTV a few times and she was HORRIBLE.

No John titor, not a big myth, but neater anyway
particleman420Aug 12, 2010
that was a regular hoax, not an internet hoax

From the wired.com article about Bonsai Kittens:
"A gun-toting investigator from the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals reportedly stopped by campus and quizzed MIT network administrators about the intent of the site. Under state law, MSPCA investigators are deputized as "special state police officers" with investigation and arrest abilities. "
f**k my state.

I don't think the Jenny hoax was anything special. I don't understand why it's received so much attention. It wasn't particularly funny or creative.
4rp4n3tAug 12, 2010
She's hot though.

I think The Grifter should be #1. I believe anyone who knows what this is will agree with me.
http://x.datchan.org/index.php?title=The_Grifter
Basically supposed to be a youtube video that caused the view to either go insane or commit suicide, or both.
doshindudeAug 12, 2010
Buried for not including eon8. That s**t was scary.
painkilla05Aug 12, 2010

I expected to see John Titor on there.
pocketsaltAug 12, 2010
What about the one with the guy who said he was going to release really secret/mysterious information on a certain date? The name of the web site was said date, but I can't remember much else about it. It had something to do with aliens and ended up being a marketing stunt for a novel. I don't know how many people it fooled, but it was really entertaining nonetheless.
nraphaelAug 12, 2010
Best hoax I ever heard of was the HOPA girl.
First I was all "man, she resigned and I've got a boner just looking at her"
Then I was all "man, it was a hoax and I've got a boner just looking at her"

I don't read group mailings (read and resend!! important!!) So I honestly missed every one of those. That article is the first I'd heard of any of those. They are also new, there are older hoaxes than those mentioned that were much better.
The penny a cola tab for a urinalysis machine, and many better than those listed.
Check out Scopes for Hoaxes, they have the old ones listed
The World Trade Center picture I saw first on www.Fark.com but I thought someone there had made it; and MS paint I'm sure was http://www.getpaint.net/ - when I saw that picture the first time paint.net wasn't as grown up as it is now.
Never mentioned - a hoax thats been around for as long as I've been on online: BBS's and then the internet (early 80's) every February there is a mass scare of a modem tax, then it was an internet tax. That was already law or going to become law in a few months.
Every year a whole new batch of new people were ripe for the for the "online tax" and to contact your Senator's" or call so and so, some had list of officials and phone numbers.
It came in your email, it was the subject of thousands of threads. Some people knew for sure it was the truth and argue, then flame, then it dies down; only to start all over again the next year.
It still happens, but now it's more of a reality, than a yearly scare to the new users,
(net neutrality).

FTA: "For their part in the rumor, Kramer and Twitch were given their walking papers."
"You know, A guy gets fired. They say 'Jeez, poor guy... well, they gave him his walking papers today'. Did you ever get any walking papers? Seriously? Believe me, in my life I got fired a lot of times. You can tell. Never got any walking papers. Never got a pink slip either. Do you know what I would get? A guy would come to my desk and say 'GET THE f**k OUT OF HERE!' You don't need paper for that." -George Carlin, RIP

I love the tourist of death. I included him in a photo collage to a friend. Apparently he can also surf a massive tidal wave too.
