The G2 looks like a sweet kit. I'd like to know more about the internals, though. Is it a match for the Samsung Galaxy S phones?
pw378Aug 21, 2010
The G2 looks like a Nexus One with a slide out keyboard (and replaced touch-ball with a touch-pad).
The phone is almost identical in appearance to the Nexus One. I guess Google's purpose of the Nexus One is a success (show the vendors how to make a phone right).

Are more people waiting until post-launch before deciding, ever since the iPhone fiasco?
spacem00seAug 20, 2010
Well they got rid of the trackball, thats a good start. I have the G1 and I hate the trackball.
parlo33Aug 20, 2010
i love the trackball, but also this is my first smartphone so i might not know any better
nascenttAug 21, 2010
I have a g1 and like the trackball.
ryebryeAug 21, 2010
I have the nexus one and had a g1 and love the trackball. How do you easily move the text insertion point or select small links without using one?
dankersAug 21, 2010
Sometimes the scroll is nice for selecting between text to fix grammer errors, other than that now that I think about it the trackball doesn't serve much purpose
spacem00seAug 21, 2010
My G1's trackball is very sensitive, so much that typing out a text message, it doesnt take much force to bump it out of the text window and onto the send button. Common for the phone to send text messages prematurely.
I prefer a D-Pad over a trackball, for secondary control. Used it with Opera Mini on my old HTC Dash (WinMo6x) phone, worked fine, even tho it didnt have a touch screen. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I found the trackball useful - faster than swiping between windows and has more precision when navigating text or form controls etc.

WP7 phones are obsolete on launch day. Why? Because their resolution is only 800x480 in comparison to the iPhone 4 which is 960 x 640 and the next generation Android phones will probable have 1280 x 768 resolution which is better than 720p.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
twinklyjesusAug 20, 2010
But you can call people with the Android...
geogeerAug 20, 2010
What would the point be of a 1280x768 phone resolution? If the eye cannot discern greater resolution then it is a waste of memory and processing power. Otherwise you have to make the screen big enough that it no longer becomes convent to use as a phone.
aminy23Aug 21, 2010
Well, let's do some math; it is know that Apple's retina display has 326 pixels per inch. If a phone has a screen resolution or 1280x768, and the same screen resolution as the iPhone4, then the screen would be Long side = 1280/326 ≈ 3.926; short side = 768/326 ≈ 2.356; according to Pythagorean theorem, the diagonal size would be will be 4.578" ≈ 4 9/16". In words an Apple fan boy might be able to understand, a "retina display" with a screen resolution of 1280x768 would be a 4 9/16" screen, not much larger than the HD2/DroidX/EVO screen which is about 4 5/16".Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

The eye can discern greater resolution. Why is it that laser printers print at 1200 dpi and higher? A low end laser printer is 1200 dpi. Another thing that people don't realize is that having more pixels that discernible individually can actually increase the dynamic range (shades and depth of colors so the image can have improved fidelity).
aminy23Aug 21, 2010
@ nullcodes 800x480 is the minimum screen resolution for Windows Phone 7, in other words, to make sure the phones are not obsolete at launch, the screen cannot size cannot be less than 800x480 which is the current screen resolution of the best android phones, so the worst Windows Phone 7 phones will be as good as the best Android phones.

Ugh I just want to know the release date on that G2. I'm sitting here with a screwed up Blackberry Curve and need to upgrade, but I don't know how long I can wait. I don't want to get an HD2 if the G2 is coming out in a month though... Argh.
twinklyjesusAug 20, 2010
Wait for the G2.
webgeek2point0Aug 21, 2010
Or get the Vibrant. The G2 does look pretty nice though, and if you have HSPA+ in your area, then you're golden.
rowebenjAug 21, 2010
I thought the vibrant supported HSPA+
nonmagicalAug 21, 2010
From what I heard, the G2 is the first HSPA+ available phone. I could be wrong though.
I'm not overly concerned if I have HSPA+ available in my area yet, since even if I don't it should be rolling out within the year.
joshszman09Aug 22, 2010
Well, look at it this way. The HD2 can literally run 4 different operating systems. Windows Mobile 6.5, Android 2.2, Blackberry OS, and Windows Phone 7. That gives you TONS of flexibility.
kgtheway2bAug 20, 2010
All I see here are a bunch of numbers I don't know what mean.
Grammar not my best point is.
nascenttAug 21, 2010
Absolutely love my G1 and hoped the droid would surpass it, but the keyboard is nowhere near as nice.
This g2 keyboard looks just as good as the g1's and could very well be my next phone.

same boat, got a g1 in feb of 09.. looks like feb of 11 the g2 will be out and all the kinks will be fixed. im pretty excited
nascenttAug 21, 2010
I got my G1 the moment it came out, so had to renew my contract, so I'm not sure I'll be as lucky with the timing.
I wish they announced the G2 a bit earlier to coincide with the first wave of customers.
danmedAug 21, 2010
umm.. i have a t-mobile G2.. in the uk.. it's old .. isn't it??? if this is new why are they calling it a G2?!

running cronos froyo 0.2.0.0 by the way.. why does it take the community to make a good phone great!?
jedikvAug 21, 2010
Haha me too - running a G2 Touch or whtever T mobile branded the HTC Hero. So this is an odd name for the new G2.
I am running SenseHero 5B5.1 - super fast, super stable and super sexy. Cronos was ok too - but currently there's some weird conflict going on between the XDA devs and the developer to do with GNU/GPL disagreements.
This new G2 might just be my very next phone....that or the Desire HD. Wait till the specs come out
dulcettoneAug 21, 2010
What's next? A G3?
Perhaps a G3 G4 with more megapixels?
aminy23Aug 21, 2010
No, it has more geebees.
zeitgeist6149Aug 21, 2010
f**k those hard keyboards!! they just add more bulk to the phone.
joshszman09Aug 22, 2010
I have the HTC Touch Pro 2(best keyboard I have ever used) and the "bulk" isn't that bad. It would be nice if it were thinner, but the trade off is well worth it. An on screen keyboard(even with swype) is no substitute for typing with a (good) physical keyboard. Plus you get tons of extra buttons and shortcuts, which come in handy.
