Who's job is it to research facebook? Why do I have a feeling they just went and found two dudes in a college dorm and said "Hey, do more of your friends use privacy settings now than they used to?"
andyroo316Jul 31, 2010
Or maybe they're just sociology/technology researchers doing a single study on Facebook?
Think. Then type.
Closed AccountJul 31, 2010
That's exactly what they are. I've actually been reading Danah Boyd's research for the last 3 years or so. The first study if her's I noticed was one that showed class differences between kids on Myspace and Facebook. She definitely knows her stuff and is a big name in the information science field.

High school dropouts discovered Digg while I was gone. Oh joy.
crea8iveartJul 30, 2010
didn't they found it too early?
nextparadigmsJul 30, 2010
They've finally realized they can't put ALL their college parties pictures in the public stream.
zeeakzJul 30, 2010
Facebook was never secure regarding the privacy, its just that we people have noticed it lately.
ckhhrryissJul 30, 2010
Privacy settings just became cool over night or what?
eikon89Jul 31, 2010
I used privacy settings BEFORE they were cool.
voginJul 30, 2010
It's in fashion to discuss Facebook issues these days. Another question is how many of those engaging in discussion still write on their wall "I had a great breakfast today" and how many doesn't use FB at all (me).
kahnzaJul 31, 2010
Anyone who's not my friend can only see my pic and hometown. Friends of friends can't see anything either.
skinny01Jul 31, 2010
Until they randomly change their policy or add new "features" the way they do and the new default becomes "everyone" or "friends of friends". Your stuff will be exposed until you realize they did it which probably won't be until it hits the headlines unless you make it a habit of completely checking all of your settings every single day.
bjornskiJul 31, 2010
If you "like" a Facebook Security page or New Features page, you'll typically be told of them the day they roll out.
kahnzaJul 31, 2010
Well its a good thing I don't do stupid stuff and put it on facebook then.
dissonanceJul 31, 2010
Except that there's always some idiot at a party where he knows everyone is intending to get smashed drunk and he insists on taking pictures that invariably on end up on his facebook. Then he goes ahead and tags everyone. Cheap digital camera technology sucks.
kahnzaJul 31, 2010
So I guess its a good thing I don't go to parties with drunk people.
skinny01Jul 31, 2010
You have to watch out though. I have a friend that I know isn't on facebook to try to stay private but she gets wild at parties sometimes and everyone else in there is on facebook. So I see all kinds of pictures of her letting loose online and she probably doesn't even know they're out there.
You can try to be private all you want, as long as there are people taking pictures anywhere, you just may end up on it. You may not be tagged in the pic since the person that took it doesn't know you, but someone they know might know you.
sicsempertyrannJul 31, 2010
This has got to be the irony that ends all irony. People post what they're doing/ going to do thinking/ feeling/ state of mind for people to read and know about. It's very private if you ask me.
fxspec06Jul 31, 2010
Who needs privacy anyway, totally overrated

consig1iereJul 31, 2010
What about the twitter account? I know you have one don't lie !
archangelzltJul 31, 2010
Closed... or deleted? There is a difference.
@consig1iere: Twitter isn't that bad unless you are one of those people who broadcast your every movement on it. Facebook... well, let's just say that it's utterly useless if you don't reveal your privacy to SOMEONE, and I don't trust Facebook for keeping that information solely to the ones I want.
stickyheadJul 31, 2010
Just don't put information you don't want to be public onto FB. Why is that such a hard concept to grasp? There's nothing on my profile that would bother me if the info became public.
w1cked1Jul 31, 2010
Can't control what your peers post of you and if you were aware of the kind of s**t they pulled you'd know they actively f**ked privacy by marketing you and your activities, browsing habbits, buying habbits, etc. If you don't care about that kind of rape you're a moron, but then you are for being on facebook in the first place.
andyroo316Jul 31, 2010
Here's a great example: http://www.metro.co.uk/news/836327-10-000-bill-for-friend-to-pay-over-facebook-paedophile-joke

princeamorJul 31, 2010
They didn't say which settings they switched them from or to.
socialstacyJul 31, 2010
Hmm who woulda thunk it, people actually do care about their privacy...
williepepperJul 31, 2010
Sounds like facebook just jumped the shark. It was good while it lasted...like AIM, MySpace, Digg and Twitter.
Romm1eJul 31, 2010
Google Me is next.
akula89Jul 31, 2010
DIGG YOU SAY? but alas, you are still here.
doshindudeJul 31, 2010
I see what you did there.
mrkev150Jul 31, 2010
Aim is still okay... I'd rather talk to my friends live rather than post messages for others to see.
zb757Jul 31, 2010
Twitter is dead?
braininaboxJul 31, 2010
surveying writing students at a single university = accurate statistic?

Diaperspora.
Seriously, they need to come up with a better name.

I think they're expecting a massive movement from Facebook to their site.
azwethinkweizmJul 31, 2010
Buried for being inaccurate.
All facebook users had to change their settings twice due to Facebook changing policies so it's no wonder why more users are accessing their privacy settings.

f**k Zuckerburg!
...and the RIAA!
thegreatone2009Jul 31, 2010
Simple, don't put up s**t that you don't want up. It truly blows my mind how people put their cell phone numbers and even house addresses up. All you have to do is put up what you feel isn't going invade you privacy.
bosskeyJul 31, 2010
You can also do this survey by tracking the decrease in the number of hotties who have public photo albums.
magic6435Jul 31, 2010
If they are worrying about "privacy issues" then it shows a fundamental lack of understanding when it comes to anything you do online. IF YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT SOMEONE KNOWING IT THEN DO NOT PUT IT ONLINE.
gehringerJul 31, 2010
what about stuff your friends put on facebook? you know at least one of your friends probably has a picture of you doing something embarrassing that t you wouldn't want put on the net.
blizzardwaveJul 31, 2010
people still take pictures of you and upload them. even if you untag yourself, a person still has some sort of power over you with those pictures. that's what I hate about facebook.
