Digg! We must pay to keep Reddit alive or we will have to endure an influx of Reddit users after it dies.
krekkoJul 11, 2010
But I don' wanna hear "OLD NEWS WAS ON REDDIT LAST WEEK" anymore =[
brad3378Jul 11, 2010
As a 5 year veteran of Digg, I'll be buried (if not banned) for this comment, but here's a few reasons why I switched to Reddit. I hope Kevin Rose is listening.
Reddit pages load MUCH faster than Digg pages. Digg is too bloated. It's no wonder why threads only go 3 levels deep on Digg. Your computer (and Digg's servers) would never handle it.
Reddit makes it much easier to quickly collapse and expand comments. It also keeps a comment thread expanded so you can upvote the children after burying the parent.
Reddit doesn't give me "token appears to be invalid" error messages when I attempt to post a message.
Reddit allows you to make comment edits past the 5 minute time limit.
Comments edited after 60 seconds are tagged with an asterisk mark. This cuts down on bulls**t-perpetuating comments and encourages users to correct their mistakes.
Reddit allows you to privately message a specific user without sharing your email address in front of potentially 1000's of people.
Digg will ban you for having a 2nd account.
Reddit encourages multiple throwaway accounts so you can preserve your anonymity while posting controversial comments or to controversial topics. Slashdot allows a checkbox to post as an "Anonymous Coward" but unfortunately there's no way to identify one AC from another AC.
Reddit has an Orange Colored Envelope link to *easily* view replies so you don't have to rely on the external servers to view Replies. As a digg user I use http://bleu.west.spy.net/diggwatch/comments/ - assuming that that these servers are even working. They often don't work at all.
Digg is easily manipulated by power users. Not so much on Reddit.
Reddit allows comment formatting - including hyperlinked text.
The users and comments are more intellectual on Reddit. If you like funny pictures of cats stay on Digg. If you enjoy learning go to Reddit or Slashdot.
Digg encourages a "Hive mindset" by showing which of your friends dugg a comment.
It also causes page load times to rise exponentially.
I enjoy the /r/iama and /r/askReddit sections - Digg offers nothing like this.
If you hate the page formatting on Reddit, you can use browser add-ons to make pages more readable.
I use Greasemonkey scripts to place boxes around comments and show up/down votes. I also bumped up the font size with my control key and mouse roller.
Reddit has Porn Section. Digg will ban you for posting a link containing objectionable material. Digg is a police state by comparison.
Reddit offers NSFW tags - I especially like the new feature that keeps the mild stuff on the NSFW1 section separate from the NSFW4 section that will scar you for life. And yes there is material like that.

I moved to reddit for many of the same reasons you mentioned (especially the load times of pages). I just got an invite to the new digg beta and I can tell you that the speed increase is amazing. The site feels much cleaner and lightweight while still remaining aesthetically pleasing. I would recommend you join the beta, I have been visiting the site much more often since I got it.

About the bloated problem, I'm using Digg 4 as I type and let me reassure you that it's incredibly fast and snappy, in some cases faster than Reddit.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I gave up on digg about a year ago. Content was just crap, except the content stolen from reddit. Most of the users are assh**es too. You can have a conversation on reddit - on digg, you're a kook, a crazy, an assh**e, etc...
cyrixMar 19, 2011
Oh god, you are 100% right and anyone burying you hasn't the slightest clue what they're doing.
johnnysoftwareAug 19, 2011
Well, a small but disruptive set of Digg users have shown themselves willing to "game" the system as much as it allows.
Allowing everyone to have multiple accounts could allow the to engage in positive-spin, self-effacing "conversations".
FEMA proved during Bush's administration how bad these "posing as the other party in a conversation can be" with its infamous "faux press conference" Faux News were there, naturally, filming it and not disclosing it as a sham -- naturally.
But real news channels and real-life news reporters were not there. They got invited 15 minutes beforehand unlike Faux, which was absurd because DC traffic is heavy and stations/bureaus are not in the same building as FEMA.
FEMA PR department staffers, misrepresenting themselves as real news media reporters, lobbed softball and even complimentary "questions" to the guy running the show & agency.
It was a sham worthy of bad-old-days in Russia. Someone pointed out that back in the day, communist leaders used to use this very trick for propaganda purposes. No wonder the Russians and Soviet Union citizens were dispirited, and business picked up after some house cleaning was done.
So anyway, the last thing Digg needs is self-appointed apparatchiks like the really bent crowds of folks that have done this in hardline "conservative" parties in Russia and more experienced democratic nations like the US.
If you want to play games like that, check if Faux News allows that on their comment board. They seem to have no problem with it in their own broadcasts.
brad3378Jul 11, 2010
6 minutes too late to edit my comment and mention Digg's Dragon Age advertisement fiasco.
khivaJul 11, 2010
How does it make sense for redditors to at the same time claim that digg's content sucks AND that digg gets all its content from reddit?
I check out both sites. The overlap is quite small, and that goes to the system's architecture. Digg is primarily articles, with a few pictures floating around. Reddit is mostly pictures, self posts, and in-jokes, with the few actual articles making their way to the front page tending to be far-let blogspam.
Pluses and minuses to both systems. There's nothing sadder than people getting into a pissing contest over a goddamned website (who also, interestingly, tend to be the same people who think that getting attached to a sports team is dumb).
enkognedoNov 30, 2010
I totally agree... and find it completely hilarious, but expected, that your comment would be down-voted... This is, like so many other things, is a popularity contest of the least witted ones. If you say something sensational, albeit stupid, you'll likely get a positive vote. Otherwise, you're just the guy standing on the sideline bickering about the obvious short-falling sites such as this and/or reddit inherently present. It is what it is...

cakewranglerJul 11, 2010
Stop digging him down, this is the way Digg works, deal with it.
And yes I use both Reddit and Digg, I like them for separate reasons.
dhughesJul 11, 2010
Exactly Cakewrangler I've used Digg since 2005 and Reddit since 2007, two of the biggest sites there are many others, people have to get over themselves both are different but the annoying thing is to see people crow at how superior one is over the other.
This is the World Wide Web you can view more than one page or website it's allowed and yes similar websites exist.
Anyone who only views one site is just foolish, the Web is huge and it's nice to have websites that collect and condenses articles but seeing the same articles hours later obviously the person just sits and watches Digg or Reddit for new popular posts and then reposts them, that's annoying to everyone.
By the way did you consider why Reddit is needing more money? They are growing, fast. Laughing at your competitor for growing isn't very wise.

"According to Schiraldi, the site's traffic numbers around 280 million monthly pageviews. However, there's no indication that a wide swath of users are participating in the site's more revenue-generating elements: clicking on ads, sponsored links, et cetera."
Gotta love Adblock.
byakkunJul 11, 2010
Gotta love brains. You need no adblock, you don't click porn ads if you use it for thinking, you may find some ads that are useful or entertaining and you don't kill businesses.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
dhughesJul 11, 2010
I don't usually use it but yesterday when I saw a Scientology ad on digg that was it for me.
kerrigoreJul 11, 2010
This is exactly why I don't use adblock. You're consuming a site's resources without giving back anything, you are the quintessential leech. It's no different than when charity events price things "by donation" and state no minimum donation, and there's always at least one assh**e who decides they aren't going to donate, or only donate a penny or something. Unfortunately with the anonymity of the internet this type of behaviour runs rampant. If you like a website and you want it to remain free to use, then whitelist it on your adblocker. Otherwise, don't be surprised if it goes under or starts other money-making practices like subscriptions. Not to mention, part of the reason websites sometimes use more annoying/intrusive ads is because they have to make up for the fact that so many people block them- not saying this is right, but it happens: "Hey, not enough people are viewing our ads for us to pay for our costs of operation... I guess we'll have to make more intrusive ads to get more views".Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
javaroastJul 11, 2010
@Kerrigore. Bulls**t plain and simple. Ad Block is a response to the ever more annoying ads, not the other way around. Sites initially started with ever more intrusive and obnoxious ads before there was an adblock because the click through on banners wasn't to their liking. Annoying flash ads that covered the content, pop overs, pop unders, ads with obnoxious sounds all came BEFORE adblock. Adblock came into existence only to answer the issue.
bosskeyJul 11, 2010
My problem isn't actually with the ads. I don't care if sites show ads. What I care about is cross-site tracking of my page visits.
isifunded911Jul 11, 2010
Flash ads slow down computers and consume a lot of electricity.
Without FlashBlock and AdBlock I could not browse the web anymore. It would be like going back to 56kb/s internet with a celeron@466mHz.
The problem is not AdBlock. Capitalism is the problem. A very popular and useful site shuts down because of money, while many useless sites backed by very rich people/corporations are still online.
darkness123Jul 11, 2010
@Kerrigore It says you're 23 years old. Do you not remember using the internet before Adblock at all? One thing javaroast didn't mention was ads that changed colour, they annoyed me so much.
Closed AccountJul 11, 2010
Adblock is the same thing as recording tv shows and skipping commercials.
johnnysoftwareSep 6, 2010
Commercials do not hack your TV set. Ads can and have hacked computers by exploiting programming flaws in web browsers and operating systems. This has been going on for half a decade or more. Long enough for people to take it into account when formulating their opinions and choosing their analogies.
kerrigoreJul 12, 2010
@javaroast, Darkness123
I didn't mean to imply that the causal relation went only one way. My point is, annoying ads lead to adblock, but adblock also leads to more annoying ads for those who aren't using adblock. It goes both ways.
steveisthedudeJul 11, 2010

andrewtheartJul 11, 2010
@nascentt -- I usually find the Reddit comments on a particular subject to be more serious, insightful, and in-depth. Digg has more jokers and trolls. Also, I prefer the Reddit comment system over the Digg one. It allows for more than two levels of child comments on a parent comment, and it feels more readable to me. So overall I'd say I prefer Reddit.
I do like the articles I find on Digg on a daily basis a bit more than the articles I find on Reddit.
andrewtheartJul 11, 2010

Reddit is a cluttered unorganized mess. No wonder they have no money. Hard to attract new users to crap like that. A little UI effort can go a LONG way.
Also, I don't know how they expect to run a business off ad revenue when they only had 1 ad on the page. Not saying litter the site with ads, but come on. They have their ads so well hidden I actually had to look for it. How the hell do they expect someone to click on it.

I actually went from Digg, TO Reddit. I still use Digg but typically the stories on digg are rehashes of what's already been on reddit (I don't think I've ever seen anything migrate from digg -> reddit)
They aren't going bankrupt either. They're asking what the users think would be a fair price for a "premium" service in order to actually facilitate new features on the website instead of just upkeep with no time for development.
bigtime2Jul 11, 2010
A lot of people went from Digg to Reddit.
I don't know why you're being buried. One of the reasons I am starting to hate about Digg is that if people disagree with your comment they bury it to hell. So even if you leave a relevant comment but you just disagree with the OP (or the author from the article) you no one will read your comment because not many people will see it since negative comments are hidden.
I've been on Reddit for three or four years (for as long as I've been on Digg) and that has never happened, while here on Digg, I bet you that this comment will be buried.

honestly,i would stop using digg if reddit had a better layout, but you get used to it after a while. i only have a problem with the comments starting out uncollapsed.
also, these are some of the first pro-reddit comments not being buried.

Reddit is Digg on over drive though, theres SO many articles on Reddit and allot are SO very anal/geeky, its not a casual site its a very tightly ran news site (by its user base).

I preferred Digg for years but I've recently switched to Reddit. Ya it's not as pretty as Digg, but there are no power users, there is SOO much more content, and pretty much everything you see on Digg was on Reddit 2 days ago. It's like living in the future over there!!! I love /r/IAMA and /r/askreddit. Digg just can't compare.
cb810Jul 11, 2010
You're wrong about power users. The power users there are the moderators that have more power than any user on digg. They block submissions and sites. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I wish new Digg would just change its algorithm so power users don't will have it harder to hit the front page.
smacksawJul 11, 2010
I guess you're not in the Digg alpha, because it's surprisingly...reddit-ish. And, I even subscribe to reddit via the Digg alpha, the reddit account, that is.
There's a lot of content on the new Digg and it's much less oriented towards the front page and towards just...anything and everything.
nightmare1228Jul 11, 2010
What I really love about reddit are the discussions. Sure, it doesn't look pretty but the askreddit sub category is one of the best places to get advice or just chat about certain topics. Reddit is all about the discussions, not the look.

Usability is a big issue for some people. I spend most of my workday managing reports in Excel format from an Oracle product which aren't the cleanest. The last thing I want to do when I get home to see the latest happenings in the world is deal with a clunky website. It's not shallow, it's called Darwin.
As far as content is concerned, Digg obviously the be all end all. Google news, Bing and any other search engine is easy to utilize as well. Any good researcher or armchair newsophile doesn't rely on one website, source, etc.
mikekmJul 11, 2010
Damn typos, I meant to say Digg obviously isn't the be all end all.
protocoldroidJul 11, 2010
I used Digg for years, now I just use both. Reddit definitely isn't as easy on the eyes as Digg, but I tend to enjoy the content there more nowadays. Also, most of the people at Reddit are pretty cool and sometimes have interesting comments, and on Digg it can feel like everyone's just waiting to start a flame war.
degainerJul 11, 2010
I used Digg for over a year before I thought to give Reddit a try. Initially, I thought the interface was god-awful too but I made myself give Reddit a few days. After awhile, I grew accustomed to the interface and began liking Reddit just as much as Digg.
Digg and Reddit both have their own perks. I don't understand the rivalry between the two sites.

gygaJul 11, 2010
You changed link colors and rounded the section tabs at the top?
lundejaJul 11, 2010
I'll definitely work on making it a userstyle on stylish, though I'm not sure how I would inform anyone of its presence.
@Gyga - I changed the colors of a few sections to make the palette more uniform, changed the styling on the register and login areas to make them more noticeable, increased the spacing between stories slightly to provide better readability, lightened the colors of visited links to make the unvisited ones stand out more, removed border colors which tend to cheapen design by giving the appearance of table structure, changed the "play" button on links with embedded video, and improved the submenu at the top by slightly increasing the size and using contrast to make it stand out a little more. Like I said, a few simple CSS design changes. Obviously the time-cost of CSS changes pale in comparison to a major UI overhaul, which is why I proposed it.
stillhateyouJul 11, 2010
Yes, but Reddit doesn't limit the comment nesting to 3 levels, which is easily one of the more annoying things about digg. The new digg doesn't have this problem, but then the site design is pretty crappy, too.

I lolled at the guy bitching about how bad Digg's comment system is because he didn't think to change the order from 'most dugg' (default when not logged in) to 'oldest first' (default when logged in) and the half dozen people that agreed with him.
Second favorite thing, reddit users who come to digg specifically to defend reddit and say stories were "stolen from reddit." *see above my comment*Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

The only way to hide someone's comment on digg is to bury them. Also, if you are replying to someone and you bury them your comment goes away if you haven't saved it yet.
Also, the sorting is broken when you sort by BEST, because the replies are out of context. The fact that their broken sorting is default for those not logged in... is funny.

Amen, brother. I've been on reddit for about a month now and I love it. Not only do I enjoy all the subreddits, but people won't downvote you just because they disagree. Here at digg, "this is the best xkcd ever" gets 1,000 diggs and otherwise intelligent comments get buried. Reddit is -- as a community -- soooooo much more wise and mature. It's like Digg's older brother who's carrying the correct number of chromosomes.

sneezyxJul 11, 2010

digitalpencilJul 11, 2010
the difference is that Reddit is proud of this..
digg looks at Reddit and pulls the "my eyes are bleeding" card but to Reddit, it's a rickety old shack, without any polish or chrome but it's theirs, through and through.. the site devs actually listen to the community, they'll change the layout and functions for a joke. no-one cares. the search feature's a f**king disaster but it's become a joke in and of itself.
that's the difference. i use both sites and have been lurking on here since digg started but this community's died. power-users came to exert too much power over the front-page (hence why digg's FP is a mirror for yesterday's /r/top). YouTube leaked into the comment threads, everything's tired ascii, forced memes and flamewars and honestly, that's a shame cause this site used to be more.
eikon89Jul 11, 2010
It's kind of like a 4Chan meets Digg, only with s**tty UI.

Reddit's layout=simplistic=easy on the eyes. I prefer it to Digg's cluttered look. To each his own =)
As for your Edit, Reddit - just like digg- is pretty useless until you set it up to match your interests. You justs got shoved a story that is in the wrong subject for you.
renegadeafkJul 11, 2010
Reddit's layout = cluttered mess of text thats hard on the eyes. Digg is sensibly laid out and has nice colors.
lacanxJul 11, 2010
Again to each his own. I find digg harder to read because the colors on the stuff other than the headline - the bury button the digg button, share, made popular <randomredboldtext>30 min ago</randomredboldtext> etc. In reddit the story line pops out, and you don't really see anything else. It makes it much easier to look through. Oh and every submission doesn't need an unrelated thumbnail.
^_^ but i'm just explaining why I personally like Reddit's layout. If you don't mind the random colors like I do than digg MAY look better to you. *shrug*

I agree, Reddit is just where Digg was a few years ago in terms of popularity.
Overall, it's most likely due to the large amount of new users both sites are bringing in, which (unfortunately) attract a younger audience. I do remember the days when both Reddit and Digg had intelligent discussions about articles, but now it's just a contest to see who can get the most diggs/upvotes.

One thing I don't get about all these "intelligent, PhD, IQ of 120+, I go to MIT, etc.," members of Reddit is how they don't understand that this is what we do on the internet. We share information. One person writes a story, another person reads it and shows it to his/her friends. One of those friends submits it to Reddit so more people can read it. One of the members from Reddit submits it to Digg so more people can read it.
Isn't that what we are trying to do here, share information so we can all have access to it? If you don't want people to share a submission that first appeared on Reddit then you didn't deserve to read it in the first place. It's not like you own it. Many reddit users, myself included, have accounts on both websites because we started at digg. Its not some big hurdle to leap to come back here. I'll also come back over here for discussions (hard to believe, but true) and also when I want some chan-level humor.
And not all of us buy into any sort of adversarial relationships, with the amount of people who got their social bookmarking start here, it holds a particular nostalgic quality that even when we're somewhere else, or here ribbing on you for being 'behind the times' as it were. Its not as common anymore, but on reddit every now and then you'll even see a submission that is one particularly though provoking slashdot comment that we'll discuss.
Also, your speculation on your reason for being burred is a bit off target. It probably has more to do with your attitude than anything else. I originally dugg your comment, but I will be burying it for complaining about burrys. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

If the comments are utterly retarded, reddit users will downvote them. If a reddit user doesn't agree with a comment but it's still insightful, they will not. This is yet another reason why I am happy for making the switch. You guys can carry on here, where Captain Picard facepalm ASCII's will have the most diggs and xkcd hits the FP 3x a week. Reddit's not bankrupt. I promise you.
That site has way too many visitors each day to not generate any money. It's impossible, unless the owner is completely inept to the concept of online marketing.
There are tons of avenues these sites can take to generate massive income. It's not like some dude is just hosting it in his basement FFS...

Glad you're passionate about it.

"That site has way too many visitors each day to not generate any money."
No one said otherwise...
But when the cost to run the site is greater than the revenue made from the site, then well... money's gotta come from somewhere.
You really do make a lot of idiotic, un-thought out posts.

"A high ranking traffic site like digg or reddit will never, ever, have trouble becoming profitable."
Except when, as I said, the cost to operate the site exceeds the revenue brought into the site by things like advertisements.
The "nuh uh!" defense stops working in second grade, and just because you want to make the same baseless statement over and over doesn't make it right.
No one ever said Kevin Rose lived in a box or was struggling with Digg. Also, as far as I know, digg has always been an 'actual company' (as opposed to being owned by someone else is my guess at your meaning).

"There are tons of avenues these sites can take to generate massive income. It's not like some dude is just hosting it in his basement FFS..."
Out of your own, extensive experience would you care to enlighten us? Digg has been having a great deal of trouble becoming profitable, and it may end up going the way of Reddit.

"Out of your own, extensive experience would you care to enlighten us?"
Sure, it's called basic knowledge and education as to how typical online business models work that revolve around user-content driven sites.
What, do you want me to lay out every facet of their business model and point out exactly how they can and should be making money with it?
Where's my contract and how much are you going to pay me to do this? :)Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Reddit isn't going bankrupt. Reddit consists of only four engineers and they have too much too do (fixing bugs, working on the site, web design etc). The problem is that Conde Nast (who owns Reddit) isn't taking them seriously enough and aren't giving them enough money to hire new developers.
Burried as inaccurate.

Whenever this topic comes up on the site, someone always posts a comment about how reddit is owned by Conde Nast, a billion-dollar corporation like Time Warner or Cobra, and how if they wanted to they could hire a thousand engineers and purchase a million dollars worth of heavy iron. But here's the thing: corporations aren't run like charities. They keep separate budgets for each business line, and usually allocate resources proportionate to revenue. And reddit's revenue isn't great.

However, a site having alexa traffic rank of 287 is striving for money, sounds pretty ridiculous. Simply using adsense should solve their problems.
In last few months, some users was abusing the site for self promotion, bringing it to that end.

Somebody will buy it to keep it viable. It's a well established site with a lot of users. If the site is having those kind of problems, it's due to management, not content. Successful marketing skills is what makes for a successful buisness. A quick glance at Reddit's front page shows ads for their proprietary products, not nationally advertised products. 101melodyJul 11, 2010
How is material formed?
socokoolaidJul 12, 2010
Reddit is the maker of material
ziriuxJul 11, 2010
Ahh yes, couple of things here. To start out with I hate reddit, while I have a great account on there, the whole system to me is flawed, because of certain sites not being able to submit anything on there. Secondly if reddit goes out, than we'll get all the imgur crap over to digg, which will spam up all the topics with pointless imgur images, such as the once that infest reddit right now. Sure I'll get possibly down voted for hating imgur but that's ok.
Digg has a lot better system I think, plus with the new digg it's giving us something fresh that fixes many things wrong with digg now.
Now onto reddit suffering when it comes to costs, well, the same people that bought them, can actually help them out, budget or not, get a loan out if you have to.
I hope reddit sticks around as competition is necessary and good for both. Even though it's not really competition, when digg is easily beating reddit in Alexa rankings. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

This is the first time I've signed into Digg in forever. But I had to. That a comment as inane as yours, and so lacking in wit or merit, should meet with the approval of 16 people completely illustrates why I could never return to Digg. Up until now it has been difficult to convey to those not conversant with Digg and Reddit just why Reddit is so superior. Thank you my friend; a screenshot of your comment will do the job very well.

Dude I am here from reddit too, but I get the joke. Once you allow for the idea that reddit design is junk ( as many here do), its a witty comment, isn't it? Just don't take it seriously!
For the record, right now I prefer reddit design, but having gone there from Digg, I remember my first reaction was that its not a good design. Actually it took me 3 months before I switched properly , all because of the different design, which many think of in inferior/superior paradigm, but which is actually just different.

Personally... I used Digg exclusively for nearly three years. I never would have considered myself a "Digg" only guy, but recently I've found myself on Reddit far more often and usually only hit up Digg now when there's nothing left for me to read on Reddit.
I've tried to identify what it is about the site that converted me, and I gotta say... it's the personal touch to it. The personal stories, stuff that you find in /IAmA and /AskReddit. I couldn't believe my eyes the first time I stumbled on /gonewild. How incredible is that? The community there seems a little more homegrown, a little more personal, a little less internet troll and a little more about "Sure I'll listen to what you have to say and give you my honest opinion." I guess that's what did it for me. Not everyone is going to have that same kind of experience, so I can only speak for myself.
People here on Digg often bash Reddit's site layout... and yeah most people who are accustomed to Digg's format may be immediately turned off by Reddit's because it's not the same. I personally didn't find it the least bit difficult to comprehend, it just took a little bit of time to get accustomed to it. Like going from one first person shooter to another, they're not all identical.
kernel16Jul 11, 2010

spectreJul 11, 2010
Glad I wasn't the only one from Reddit who felt this way. I spent years on Digg until I got into a deep highly technical conversation about propulsion engineering in a thread on Reddit. I was hooked on the community after that. Digg is nice, but Reddit is family. I think that's the big difference.
geoff1210Jul 12, 2010
Been here on Digg since 2006, and i can honestly say the content has been going downhill. My story is pretty much the same as yours.
I know everything on the internet is a repost of a repost but my god i feel like over the past 4 years digg has been becoming increasingly more "lolcat" and cute funny animals, and less tech and legitimately funny original content. I actually made the switch a week ago, used the reddit dark greasemonkey script, and immediately found the content to be refreshingly new (er) and the comments to not be as mind numbingly retarded. I come to digg after i'm done reading through reddit.
I swear, I really did love digg, but it just isn't how it used to be.
bigtime2Jul 11, 2010
You have some valid points there. Digg should have done the same thing. I know copying is not the best way to succeed, but if Digg realized that a ton of its users were leaving for Reddit, Digg could have changed some things and been better. Adding self posts (iama, askdigg, etc.), removing power users, etc.
dhughesJul 11, 2010
I get a kick out of people who say Reddit looks horrible, Digg didn't always look this way in fact there was outrage when it changed it's style a couple of times to what it looks like now, who knows what Reddit will look like in two years or what Digg will look like in two years.
Closed AccountJul 11, 2010
Reddit will look about the same in a few years. Whenever they add new features they hardly ever sacrifice the design. The biggest change was adding thumbnails, but I turned thumbnails off and its looks rather similar to the way it did when I found reddit in 2006, beautiful in its simplicity.
negativenancyJul 11, 2010
I think the funniest thing about all this is how most redditors have digg accounts that are years older than many of the most loyal digg fans. Many redditors who prefer reddit usually made the decision after directly comparing both sites, as opposed to many digg users who prefer digg because it is the only site they know.

Following it from the reddit side, every now and then there will either be a wave of new digg users coming over (like when the HD-DVD key thing happened here) or the more frequent "who else came here from digg" post.
I'm not going to hop on the reddit v digg issue because I use both and think any adversarial relationship, even just implied in comments is stupid, but at the same time I only see migration in one direction.

2006 here, and i went to reddit, hated the design, came back to digg, but this past year the content has gone to s**t.
I switched back to an account i made in early 2009 just this week and can confirm with a straight face that the content and comments over there are WAY better. If you are an OLD digg user who thinks the same about digg i highly suggest you try reddit again.
this helped me come to like the layout more:
http://userstyles.org/styles/19617
michaelzhaoJul 12, 2010
My experience almost mirrors geoff1210's. Lurked digg for several months and registered in early 2006.
I tried leaving for reddit in 2007, but the site design was very different from digg and I couldn't make the jump. However, I made the switch and haven't looked back about 2 years ago, after realizing the commenting at reddit is much more thoughtful than at digg. It's much easier having an in depth conversation on reddit, whether its over a controversial foreign policy stance or regarding the potential feasibility of a biomed device in r/ECE.
I feel like this is true especially regarding politics, what would be voted up just for at reddit for a dissenting, yet well-thought up post, would either be ignored here or buried to oblivion. I feel that diggers overall aren't as open-minded as most redditors and fail to see the "deeper" intricacies of most global affairs situations.
There was a time when digg was excellent, when it stuck to the technology/gaming only stories. I believe digg started going downhill when the friend system/power users was implemented. The variety and specificity of the subreddits really allow for a highly personalized experience and allows for interaction with people that *really care* about the topic at hand.

Reddit & Digg are identical. How do you guys manage to compete so much when your purpose, functions & methods are precisely the same?
Closed AccountJul 11, 2010
I don't want to sound like a controversial douche but there are a lot of minor and major differences. The way Digg monitors its submissions are more strict in a way. The only Reddit takes off are those that are against the US Law, yes the US Law. On Digg, both members and admins have a lot of power. Digg is also visually more "web 2.0" but they both function almost the same. And Digg has more ways to monetize than Reddit does.

I don't want to speak too soon but I'm pretty sure there are people who ONLY like to be on Digg or Reddit and despise the other.

The only stories that get exported from Reddit are the 4chan wannabes, maybe because a larger portion of reddit users are /b/tards as well. Otherwise, Digg is good to go on everything else.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

The same as Reddit users, apparently! /rimshot
