I'm confused. What's this about publishers inviting readers? That isn't how digg works...
deathfiredAug 25, 2010
The new Digg works like twitter/facebook now. You follow people you find interesting and your front page is populated with stuff they submit, digg, comment on. If you don't plan on using Digg that way, they still have the global "top news" tab where you can see what's popular on the site. It will still display stories from people like MrBabyMan and other people with crazy high follower counts due to blind digging.
fxu1989Aug 25, 2010
Yeah, but the top news isn't the main page when you login, therefore it is not the main purpose of digg anymore.
deathfiredAug 25, 2010
No one said it was. It only takes 1 click to view it though. Just like how you click on a story to post a comment ;).
runner108Aug 25, 2010
Yeah, was being a bit facetious as I'm a v4 alpha member. I just always think "wha?" whenever I go to it. Then go back to this version.
deathfiredAug 25, 2010
I tend to bounce back and forth throughout the day too. While the new Digg is great, it's still lacking real users so the majority of the content is from publishers and top blogs. It should be interesting when everyone makes the switch.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I think facebook and twitter teamed up and deleted digg, replacing it with a crappy clone hybrid that's less than the sum of it's parts. Perhaps an old.digg.com for people who actually used the site, instead of this new piece of crap that has absolutely nothing to do with what made digg so great. Word on the interwebs says there's this 'reddit' site that might be better. Never been there before, but it might be worth a look...

Hey runner! You don't have to worry about it anymore, because the New Digg doesn't work at all!

Well it's been fun Digg, I'm sad to say we'll be parting ways when the new Digg is launched. Thanks for the many hours of relief from work boredom.

Dugg because I think current users should see it. This sounds like a terrible idea.
Closed AccountAug 25, 2010
Most active users already know about this (perhaps not this specific instance, but certainly the overall direction in which Digg is being pushed). People have been bitching about this for a couple of months to no avail, so I very much doubt that this will make a difference. Face it: the powers that be have decided that they can make more money by letting random blogs, newspapers, and corporations spam the site with their content, so that's what we'll be seeing from now on, user desires notwithstanding.
wildAug 25, 2010
^^^ They can make more omoney for the next few mnonths, but when the users abandon the site theyll be screwed.
I;m actually about to sign up for reddit, god help me.
ducktomguyAug 25, 2010
that's always been ambiguous.
It would be cool if digg had a two-stage voting system:
1. bury or digg a story just so it's seen by everyone, and
2. like or dislike the content to show your endorsement or disapproval of the content

Bury it if you hate new digg, go.
wildAug 25, 2010
The most telling thing on these stories is how many of the comments bashing new digg have 0 down votes. They really don't even get the random ones, and there is always someone who diggs a comment down.
wildAug 25, 2010
Ok, whose the smartass? (o:

Remember New Coke? Well, I don't because I'm too young, but I heard it was bad, and that's what New Digg is gonna be like. You know, bad.

Oh please. I'm looking forward to the new Digg. Maybe then I won't have to read the same drivel posted by the same people...you know the type: Cheap people who think they have the God-given right to steal music/movies on torrents, who think that all police officers are tazer-happy pigs, and who think that date rape is a figment of the imagination of a scorned woman. The sad, sad thing is that I'm not making this s**t up. The vast majority of Digg users believe these things.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
koddoAug 25, 2010
I don't see what the fuss is about. Just follow MrBabyMan, that Panda guy, and maybe 1 or 2 other power users and you have the same exact thing.
factorof13Aug 25, 2010
I get your joke, but it's not the same thing at all, because there is no longer an "upcoming" section. The closest thing to it is going to be your subscriptions. That doesn't do it for me because I never paid any attention to the recommendation engine anyway.
renorkAug 25, 2010
This is really my only gripe from what I have gathered in the first coupe min of browsing new digg.
I spent the majority of my time in upcoming. If that does not get included I will be rather disgruntled.
factorof13Aug 25, 2010
New Digg is awful. The whole point of Digg has always been user driven content. The new thing is basically just an RSS feed with corporate media having most of the control.
The only people who wanted it are Digg themselves and big media.
I will not be staying after the transition.
antdudeAug 25, 2010
So what's the next Digg clone to hang out with? I don't like Reddit.
factorof13Aug 25, 2010
Most people will probably go to Reddit, I guess. I don't like it either, but I like it a hell of a lot more than the new Digg.
antdudeAug 25, 2010
Hmm, I will try again after Digg v4 goes up.
Closed AccountAug 25, 2010
FactorOf13, that's certainly *my* gameplan, likelihood of retinal bleeding notwithstanding.
punkfenixjtAug 25, 2010
Or you can just click the "Top News" tab at the top and have classic digg w/ a new skin on it.....
factorof13Aug 25, 2010
I replied to your other comment about this, but that's only true if you only care about the front page. The upcoming section is gone in the new digg. In order to get it back, you'd have to subscribe to every single user.
punkfenixjtAug 25, 2010
I've never been one to go that deep into the "Upcoming" section before, so I can't really speak about it.
Maybe it will come back, maybe it won't. But I doubt it'll stay gone forever if that many people want it back.
factorof13Aug 25, 2010
Upcoming is the heart of digg at the moment. Nothing gets to the front page without being voted on in upcoming first. I doubt they'll bring it back, because removing seems to be the primary reason for the change. It's really the only thing that sets it apart. I can only speculate about the reason, but the result is going to be that the publishers with the most subscribers will get their stories front paged. As another person said, it will be as if the entire front page were filled with "sponsored links."
This is a corporate takeover. There's no other way to describe it.
unfriendlyfireAug 25, 2010
Corporate take-over of digg complete.
r1y23Aug 25, 2010
My head has been in the sand for the past 2 years...what are they doing with my digg? And who are the publishers? Cant anyone publish stuff?
deathfiredAug 25, 2010
Publishers, I presume, are major brands like TIME, LIFE, Mens Health...etc. Yes, anyone can still submit stuff. You can even submit your rss feed from your blog to have your stories auto submitted.
ransomholdiayAug 25, 2010
dont forget tps!!!
r1y23Aug 25, 2010
Well I forsee some possible problems that could come from this. Guess we are just gonna have to wait and see. Hopefully publishers dont become the new power user.
culytAug 29, 2010
Anyone can submit stuff, but it's unlikely that anything decent will ever hit the 'top news' (ie old frontpage) again. If everyone is presented with the same corporate streams, that's the stuff that's going to get there since everyone has equal access to it, but the other, non-corporate stuff will only ever be seen by a select group that specifically go after it. It's very effective at making it appear community driven while really being totally corporate driven.
Also I'm fairly sure the top news page is rigged, they blocked all the anti-newdigg posts for starters, I strongly suspect there is a fairly elaborate system in place for faking Diggs, you used to be able to see a huge list of who Dugg what and see if they are legitimate Diggers based on their history, but not that's gone so they can enter any number they like. Not to mention they can push things to the front page that would full under the algorithm and we wouldn't know. There is also no bury option for stories any more.
Your now totally reliant on the 'friends' system which I'm guessing most people don't bother with (other than the power Diggers that friend everyone and cross Digg each other up).
Digg wasn't the same since the introduction of 'friends' anyway, that 'friend' hive Digging already destroyed %70 of the frontpage content.
zannaduAug 25, 2010
I'll just keep watching the beach bubbles video and try to forget this is here.
wildAug 25, 2010
How many more days until digg becomes a dupe of my RSS reader and facebook feed?
(And has anyone found a good, non eye-bleeding alternative yet?)

ransomholdiayAug 25, 2010
maybe everyone that hates the new digg can chip in a nickle and pay a web designer to go in and burn reddit down and then rebuild it to look like a website from after the turn of the millennium.
efreak15Aug 25, 2010
Because of the horrible layout, Reddit is not for me.
rotzooiAug 25, 2010
I've been testing the waters there since I got a New Digg(tm) invite and saw the awfulness of that monstrosity.
It sucks less than New Digg(tm).
thedudediggsAug 25, 2010
The new digg is going to kill digg.
CinnamonOrbitAug 25, 2010
Kevin Rose you sold your soul for more profits. Can I blame you? I guess not really. Everyone wants to make more money. How about the fact you allowed Digg to become an aggregate for the corporate media? We can never forgive you. Digg was one of the few chances of survival for independent sites and small publishers.
Want a real life analogy? It's almost like when Wal-mart comes to your town and puts the small shops out of business. In capitalism, as time goes on, the little guys always get stomped out. Mr. Rose - you have become a butt boy for the corporate media. Congratulations. The little guys used to look up to you.

I absolutely hate the new digg but I don't really have anywhere else to go. I'll probably end up just having to deal with v4 when the switch is made for good. I refuse to go on reddit. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
j_carcinogenAug 25, 2010
If there is a demand, and I hope there is, someone will make one. Digg basically uses open source products to run the site anyway.

busterbrosAug 25, 2010
Wow, three o's
rsm33Aug 25, 2010
I bet something like old Digg will pop up in a matter of weeks after the switch is permanent, and new Digg will become a place where there are 1 million corporate "publishers" publishing stories read by the few actual active humans still left on here.
I didn't join Digg to wade through "sponsored links." The entire internet is "sponsored links" now. Digg was fun because you couldn't buy exposure. That will all change with New Digg.
antdudeAug 25, 2010
Why not now? Come on, where? ;)
cesclaveriaAug 25, 2010
if reddit only hired a good designer to overhaul the site's interface it could steal a lot of users once the new version comes around.
doctorrabbitAug 25, 2010
Let's keep diggin' til this thing is buried.
punkfenixjtAug 25, 2010
So wait, first apple was the thing every digg user loved, then loved to hate...now its digg?
You people realize that you can use the new digg in a "Classic" way too right? All it takes is clicking the "Top News" tab at the top instead of "My News". Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
factorof13Aug 25, 2010
If you only pay attention to the front page, then that is true. The upcoming section is totally gone, though. That means that you'd have to friend every single user in order to get the functionality of "classic" digg.

I've never gotten the new digg to work my rss feeds properly. It feeds straight to the article, when i prefer it to go to comments. Then i decide if the article is worth reading.
I still have 5 invites can't even give them away.
