neotechniAug 12, 2010
Implying? No, flat out telling you.
masterspeeksAug 12, 2010
I don't care about the Android/IOS dick jockeying, but the PSP easily had a better library than the DS, as welll as the better hardware. The Nintendo DS quality library consisted of the yearly pokemon game and maybe 2 other titles that weren't s**tty nintendo 64 ports (Scribblenauts and maybe advance wars). The PSP brought portable gaming past the level of simply sprites in a pokemon game. Titles like FF: Dissidia, God of War, Persona, Grand Theft Auto, that were on par with PS2 graphics. Then you have games like patapon or lumines that tried to innovate without using touch screen gimmicks. I can go on even more about how good the homebrew community was for the PSP. There were homebrew apps for ebook and comic book readers; emulation for every console from NES to PSX. You simply can't compare the two in terms of quality.

Sony's library failed to make the PSP successful, what makes you think that same library will become a successful app? People don't buy an iphone to game, they game on the iphone two different things. Also the games people buy on their phones are quick/casual/puzzle games not God of War.

morpheousmartyAug 12, 2010
Ok, that is way overstating the case. Even on Digg gaming is not that popular a topic. Right now the top gaming news article has 555 digs, and is about Duke Nukem. Unless you mean the iPhone is dead to you, then I must say that this sealed the deal, Android is the true gaming phone, but I doubt iPhone will need any sort of saving.
wildAug 12, 2010
Yea, but things are relative. Games drive a lot of smart phone sales. Especially among tech savvy youths most likely to be first adopters.
mxm111Aug 12, 2010
I think iPhone users are older than droid users. It is different category. And I do not think that an average iPhone user cares about gaming much on iPhone.

Everyone I know that owns an iPhone plays some games, though mostly puzzle types or very simple, arcade style games. The majority of them owned a DS lite and/or PSP but they rarely carry them anymore and have instead opted to just play on the iPhone. Is this reflective of the market as a whole? No, but I'm sure some of them would be interested in being able to play some mobile versions of PSP games, and younger gamers that are getting their first mobile phones will likely be attracted to this option.
bigsteveAug 12, 2010
Oh come on, Android is pretty awesome and all, but iPhone will be just fine. Lets not s**t ourselves. Tens of diggers don't a market make.
protodonAug 12, 2010
Yeah the iPhone is really going to tank. I can already see it happening. FYI, some people don't play games and aren't geeks. Geeks are the only ones that go for Android on purpose, everyone else just goes for the phone and sometimes the phone happens to have Android on it
aronwyrthAug 12, 2010
The world does not live to play games, buddy.
randomerratumAug 12, 2010
It's going to take a lot more then merely the gaming crowd to take down the iPhone... spending all your time on Digg makes it easy to assume that the world is comprised of geeks and gamers, but that's just not the case. It's not technology and gaming that *put* the iphone on the top, it's the feature/accessibility compromise that made it popular with non-geek crowds (ie the *rest* of the world)
That being said.... even as a happy iPhone owner, I'll be very interested to see how this comes out!

REALITY CHECK:
Android phones now selling 200,000/day. Big huh? Except Nokia/Symbian phones are now selling 300,000/day and sales are up over 40% in the last year. AND that's with their "crap" "old" S60 5th ed. touch UI (otherwise known as Symbian^1). Just think what sales will be like with Symbian^3 out in the next few weeks.
"But...they don't have carrier support!" - yes they will have! Announced soon, across the US.
"But...they don't have games!" - yes they do and will have, big name support from EA and others.
"But they don't have 3D graphics and they do have underspecced phones" - well I better not tell you Symbian has had 3D for years then, and the N8 released shortly has the highest specced GPU on the market.
Oh, and the price of the N8 undercuts all high end iPhones and Androids and it's other features blow the competition away - HDMI out, TRUE Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound out, USB on the Go, Bluetooth mouse/keyboard control, the most advanced camera ever seen on a phone blowing away many standalone cameras let alone phones, etc.
Nokia/Symbian FTW.

> the price of the N8 undercuts all high end iPhones and Androids
This, by the way, is really important. It means unlike e.g. Apple with their vast profit margins on every iPhone, Nokia actually are doing something for the benefit of everyone, bringing considerably better specced products out at considerably lower prices - more people get to benefit from the technology, rather than just the rich folk.
deslockAug 12, 2010
We're not talking about the "cell phone" business. We're talking about portable entertainment devices. Who gives a rip about the Nokia ngage platform or whatever that dead thing was. And nobody cares about how many dumphones are running symbian.

anexanhumeAug 11, 2010
Sony needs to tread carefully. Unless they find a solid way to differentiate themselves from other hardware, their proving that "premium" handheld gaming can happen on the android platform will invite a lot of competitors for their slice of the pie.
That being said, this thing needs to pack at least Tegra 2 by the time it is launched. It needs to have bleeding edge hardware to differentiate itself and show it's more than just a phone. And it better not f**king have 3 second battery life.
daedoneAug 12, 2010

khastAug 12, 2010
... knowing how Sony has handled the PSP. I would imagine they would find some way to block emulation on the device.
I can also imagine how quickly there is a cfw x.xx released...
smacksawAug 12, 2010
I don't think they would, because the entire idea behind it is that Google lets you do what you want to with it.
elranzerAug 12, 2010
AT&T has figured out a way to block Google's Android Market plus the ability to install your own apps in their Motorola Backflip and other devices. That's the problem with Android... Google lets you do anything you want.
Hopefully Sony Ericsson won't do anything similar with the PSPhone.
bugmenot2Aug 12, 2010
You can root the Milestone, you just can't install custom ROMs due to a locked bootloader.
typeeeAug 12, 2010
The question is can Sony have their own marketplace on android. If they can't, they might still be leveraging google's marketplace for their games, then it's up to every phone company to put a controller to play sony's game. Am I missing something?
elranzerAug 12, 2010
Other vendors do have their own marketplaces (AT&T and LG, for example). The only problem is, if you use your own marketplace, Google doesn't allow you to use THEIR marketplace.
So it's a trade-off.
morpheousmartyAug 12, 2010
If they are smart they will make the Playstation store work on any Android 3.0 phone, similar to the way the Kindle is on just about every platform. I know most phones lack dedicated gaming controls, but a Dualshock Android peripheral could solve that.
wildAug 12, 2010
Last I checked, the Sony gaming divisions wasn't swimming in the black. Anything that increases the reach of the playstation brand, and its licensing fees, can't hurt.

So, I wouldn't exactly get your hopes up, unless Sony says otherwise.
mweatherAug 12, 2010
You can limit which devices your app will appear in the market for, so even if these games weren't limited to just one phone, they would still be limited to phones powerful enough to handle the games.
Though I doubt they'll be available on other phones, what with the general lack of d-pads and shoulder buttons.
parkskier426Aug 12, 2010

I work in professional video including HD mastering and DVD authoring...
While Sony's technology is probably the best and most stunning out there on both consumer and professional levels, they're WAY out of touch with the average user experience;
Blu-Ray is a beautiful technology, but the implementation is a complete disaster. They've completely abandoned the consumer market with a bloated, convoluted, half-concieved product that from a usability standpoint, is a step backward from DVD in my opinion.
I love my PS3 because it boasts some of the best technology available for the consumer market, but I've wanted to throw that thing through the window so many times- the interface is overly complicated, simple tasks like identifying controllers and connecting to the internet become time and energy consuming chores far too often for a machine that's meant to be the center of a home-entertainment system. Yes, It does everything... but not without a heap of hassle.
In my opinion, when it comes to interface and accessibility, Sony is extremely lazy. I would be surprised to see a reliable, accessible, user-friendly phone from them any time soon. However, it wouldn't take much to turn things around... with Sony's knack for technology, just taking a few fundamental design cues from someone like Apple could really make them unstoppable.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

"They've completely abandoned the consumer market with a bloated, convoluted, half-concieved product that from a usability standpoint, is a step backward from DVD in my opinion."
In absolutely no way is bluray a step backwards from DVD.
From a user.
"the interface is overly complicated, simple tasks like identifying controllers and connecting to the internet become time and energy consuming chores"
To identify a controller? You mean the numbered lights? Or plugging it in via USB to connect?
Connecting to the internet is easy as hell, click network settings, automatic. Done. It connects itself after that.
PS3s interface has won awards for how simplistic/user friendly it is. 360's UI is massively convoluted in comparison

Of course Apple was influenced by previous devices – I'd never deny that. I was just pointing out that Android can't take all the credit for the current smartphone boom, just because it was around first. It has changed a lot since the early versions, and it's not hard to spot where it was influenced by the iPhone. The iPhone has also gained features from Android, largely due to user pressure, but I'd say it was much less overall.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

http://www.intomobile.com/2007/12/24/playstation-emulator-for-iphone-is-now-public-and-free/
web2pointblowmeAug 12, 2010
Emulators for pretty much any legacy console exist for Android and WinMobile as well. iPhone is not leading any packs there. Regardless of platform, the emulated ROMs are typically buggy as hell and mostly unplayable on a touch screen (not to mention that the emulator itself is major drain on battery life).
What' s significant about this story is that Sony is developing games to run natively on Android and we can expect a phone with a slideout gamepad. Apple does not invite this sort of collaboration and hence can suck it.
Android will continue to take their market share by embracing the Open Source ethos. This attracts partnerships and produces advances in hardware and software technologies that would not be possible without the synergies that result from say a Sony and a Google putting their minds together.

What I find interesting is that my basic "f**k Apple" post is getting thumbed up bigtime but my rebuttal @0mathew00mathew0 regarding his link to a 3 yr old article about console emulators running on the iPhone is thumbed down.
In the latter, I thought I made a fairly cogent argument as to why the Android approach to development through partnership and collaboration will in the end position it ahead of Apple and its secret cult way of doing business. While the Apple fanboys greet every iPhone release as if it was Moses coming down the mountain with another ten commandments, Google/Android is quietly plugging away, forging relationships with manufacturers and developers to revolutionize the way we view mobile communications.
iPhone users might have 20 different fart apps at their disposal but they don't have native support for G-Voice and G-Nav which are the real game changers.
@DolphinGL: My first post was tongue-in-cheek. The thing is that I see many similarities between Apple fanatics and religious zealots that stand on the side of the freeway touting their particular flavor of prayer to an invisible and all-powerful cloud dweller. Still, I wouldn't consider myself bitter. Both can annoy in their own way but for the most part I pity them for their ignorance. I have no ill will.

khastAug 12, 2010
Not to mention, it has a lot of awesome features that my iPhone doesn't. (And will never have....f**k it took until 3.0 for copy and paste...and 4.0 for a half assed multitasking....)
Features that are on my friend's Droid X which I envy. Turn by Turn GPS, true voice commands (Including for the map search), speech to text (e-mail, texting, note taking, ect.), home screen widgets, 8.0MP camera, and a whole lot more.
infinitysnatchAug 12, 2010
This is only going to work if they let you download all the games available for PSP Go. If they're smaller more obscure games like the ones currently available for the iPhone, no one with a Droid will bother if they can get a $3 app that emulates every GBA and legacy system game for free.
elranzerAug 12, 2010
The real news is that a smartphone with proper gaming buttons and D-pad is on its way. So, even if you're not into Sony's stuff, it has the proper button layout to play SNESdroid and other emulators better than the Motorola Droid ever could (even with that add-on gamepad attachment).
spacemanspiff22Aug 12, 2010
I really don't see how they could magically make every PSP game work on a completely different architecture. Emulation has been proven to just not work all that well for anything even remotely recent, and they can't just throw in the PSP internals in addition, like they did on the original PS3.
That having been said, this could absolutely encourage real game development on the platform. The $2-3 games that sell so well are not worth more than that, but there's no reason why we couldn't see real, full featured titles that are worth $20-30. Part of the reason we haven't is a lack of hardware both internally and in terms of controls.
mushroomer25Aug 12, 2010
This is a great concept, but the gaming end of it needs a big fix. For one, ditch the PSP Go. Use this as your chance to build the PSP2 into something amazing. The PSP has been effectively dead for awhile - move on. Second, dual analog nubs. This touchpad looks absolutely unusable as a camera control device.
Finally, include an option for using UMDs on the thing. I don't care if I have to buy an attatchment, it's just bad business to not include backwards compatibility at this point.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

gcr113Aug 12, 2010
Oh who cares, I'm still waiting on Froyo zzzzzZZZZZZZZzzzzzz
iignotusAug 12, 2010

There are a tremendous number of great PS1 games that would be perfect for a portable device. The relatively low rez ps1 games would look great on a small screen. A portable PS1 would be a must buy for me.
PS2 emulation on a phone seems like a bridge too far though, the existing PS2 emulators need a fair bit of power on a PC.
vonsamaAug 12, 2010
It would be an interesting test to get disgaea to run on a phone. I haven't heard of emulators on android yet, but I don't have a phone so I haven't looked.
quimbydoggAug 12, 2010
There is a PSX emulator for droid already. There are also genesis, nes, snes, gb, gba, and mame emulators.... probably even more. You can even get a scumm engine program for android.
themapleboyAug 12, 2010
you dont have a phone?
what do you live in the woods and communicate by signal fire?
it's 2010 man!
themapleboyAug 12, 2010
portable ps1?
have you heard of the PSP ?
convert any ps1 game and play it on the go
number23Aug 12, 2010
The single analog control is a deal killer.
quimbydoggAug 13, 2010
Why carry around another device in your pocket if you dont need to. My psp is collecting dust on a shelf while I am playing PSX games on my droid during lunch breaks at work.
neotechniAug 14, 2010
"The single analog control is a deal killer."
No it's not. Most PS1 games support using zero!
dutchsaintAug 13, 2010
Any android phone with a physical keyboard and a strong processor is a portable ps1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycUH7N9ZsfE#t=0m50s
kjones555Aug 12, 2010
If this comes into reality within the year, and comes to Verizon of course, bye bye Moto Droid.
neotechniAug 12, 2010
If this isnt PSP2, shouldn't Sony be concentrating on that?
kelnaAug 12, 2010
This is awesome, I hope someone makes a Game Gripper to match the physical controls for other android phones with physical keyboards.
dutchsaintAug 13, 2010
There should be some economical competition there... I mean, €15 + €5 shipping is a bit much for a piece of rubber imo.
sabin8Aug 12, 2010
Consequences will never be the same...
skyyoAug 12, 2010
My dream phone could become a reality!!
Touch screen, 4 inch display, andriod, Playstion, camera, and walkman all in one device.
I'd pay 300 on a contract for this.
explodingzebrasAug 12, 2010
and a spell checker presumably?
sgxyayAug 12, 2010
This could be cool if they don't half-ass it. It kind of sounds like the Sony gaming division isn't really in on this, or we'd be hearing all about it connecting with PSN and the PSN store, etc. An Android phone with slideout game buttons sounds like a great hardware design, but it's doubtful this thing will play existing PSP games, and how many major game designers are working in Android? Sony's developers probably aren't working on anything good for this platform.
nytelAug 12, 2010
All the phone really needs are shoulder buttons.
smacksawAug 12, 2010
Article says it has them.
themapleboyAug 12, 2010
and analog nubs ..... 2 of them
quimbydoggAug 12, 2010
There is already a PSX emulator for the android platform. I've been playing FF7 on my breaks at work lately. Playstation gaming has been on android for the last few weeks (and it works pretty damn well).
maqikelefantAug 12, 2010
What phone do you use, and how good are the frame rate and controls? I've got a Droid, and have been thinking about getting that for a week or so now, but just can't decide if it's worth the purchase, especially since there's no demo version of it to try before you buy.
quimbydoggAug 12, 2010
I've got a droid and it works fine. I do have my droid rooted and have an overclocked kernel to 1.1ghz installed tho. I think a stock droid can still run the emulator fine but I am not 100% sure about that, you would need to research it if you run stock.... On the other had I'm not sure why anyone would want to run a stock droid :P The android platform is all about the root.
Here is a thread that discusses game compatibility you may find useful:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-games/63329-psx4droid-game-compatibility-list.html
Not all games work, but it seems like the majority do - especially any of the more popular games.

dont, controls don't feel right

The android market has a 24 hour return policy. If you buy the app and don't like it, just uninstall it within 24 hours and you'll get a full refund. I think it's been changed to 48 hours now, but the android market policies page still says 24.
See:
http://www.google.com/mobile/android/market-policies.html
I know. I probably just changed your life forever. :D Now go download everything in sight.

I also have a droid with the ps1 emu on it. I've tried a few different games and they play very well. I was reading something about how BIN/ISO files differ on the emu though because of something to do with the way each CD image handles audio (I think it was ISO might cause audio lag where BIN files did not). I haven't tested enough to back up these claims though. I'm planning on doing my own rip of something like Armored Core MoA in both formats to see if there is an actual difference in FPS/audio lag. But for now I was testing on RayStorm in ISO and it works very well.
kinseyincanadaAug 12, 2010
holy crap the Android market has a return policy thats freaking amazing.
elranzerAug 12, 2010
The Droid has a crappy button layout for proper emulation though. D-pad and compass-arranged buttons are the way to go.
silentjAug 12, 2010
Look up a "Game Gripper". They make them for the droid. Slips on right over the hardware keyboard and has a good button layout. Just ordered mine and can't wait to get it. Tried playing emulators without it and it was rough...
elranzerAug 12, 2010
I know about the Game Gripper, but you have to then carry an extra device in your pocket. The Game Gripper is not that small, you might as well just have a PSP-3000 with emulators in your pocket.
typeeeAug 12, 2010
However, u r touching buttons that does not exist, I hate to play games on a touchscreen that was designed to play with a controller.
vibr8Aug 12, 2010
Console games on a phone screen are s**t.
There are emulators for the iPhone, but only an idiot would bother with them.
To summarise: this will be useless, only a simpleton could get excited by this news.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
elranzerAug 12, 2010
Well on an iPhone yeah. Touchscreen-only controls for console games are s**tty. Android devices can have buttons, though, and this device even has a D-pad.

elranzerAug 12, 2010
I know about that concept device (not yet released, I see), but then you have to carry an extra device with you, or keep it permanently attached to your iPhone which makes it too big and ugly.
Might as well just carry a PSP-3000 in your pocket/purse if you're gonna lug that thing around.

Not all games. I've played several ROMs on my friends iPhone 3GS and they play great. Its really being limited to a touch screen that makes games like F-Zero unplayable on it vs my Droid with a physical keyboard. There are still tons of older games you can play just fine on the iPhone though including things like SMB and RPGs like Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger.
jabbrwockeyAug 12, 2010
PSP
move on
schaviraAug 12, 2010
iPhone works good for emulating RPGS, but nothing with intense button pressing (fighters, platformers, etc.)
nickkukAug 12, 2010
"Console games on a phone screen are s**t. "
Yeah right, a screen that size has never been any good for mobile gaming. The Gameboy, PSP, DS, etc, etc, all failed right?
vibr8Aug 13, 2010
they were all s**t
godsdeadAug 12, 2010
This would be epic, if they bring the games with it, all games suck so hard on the market :(
bugmenot2Aug 12, 2010
Unfortunately, it's true. :(
There are a couple good racing and flight control games and some of the Gameloft games are pretty cool, but the majority of Android games are pretty lame. I really hope Sony pushes aggressively with the games on Android, maybe even making this the PSP2. That would be amazing.
pureeviljesterAug 12, 2010
This is what I've been waiting for from sony.
no idea why it took them so long. if they didn't waste time on the GO we would have this already.
also this really only interest me if the graphics are >= the psp.
*fingers crossed*
dexterbloodguyAug 12, 2010
Have been an Iphone user since the 1st gen and wast really excited about any new phones coming out but this will change it all.Looking forward to it.If sony can somehow fit in a QWERTY physical keyboard and perhaps a walkman branding that ensures awesome audio playback would seal the deal.

Not at all related to the topic but is 3.1.3 the latest iOS for the original iPhone?
julesxAug 12, 2010
Maybe Sony should just add a phone to the PSP

Ah hell, I've been replaying Valkyrie Profile in my spare time on my phone and runs great. Why not?
gunforhireukAug 12, 2010
Unfortunately, like almost every other Sony Ericsson phone ever made, the hardware will be notoriously unreliable and it'll break constantly. No thanks.
/Someone who doesn't know anyone that's had a SE phone without hardware issues
spacemanspiff22Aug 12, 2010
I had a sony phone without any issues. Also, their game systems are top notch, which is more than you can say for plenty of other hardware companies.
sindexAug 12, 2010
My gf had a SE phone with no problems... until she dropped it in the pool. Then everything began coming off the front. But the phone still worked. In fact, after we got our G1's her damn phone kept powering itself back on and setting the alarm for 7am, even when we turned the thing off completely. It might have worked a little too well....
geenopeAug 12, 2010
I have a Sony Ericsson. It's pretty old, and I don't use it as my main phone, but I've had it for at least 4 years now. NEVER ran into any problems. Even dropped it in a puddle once and it continued working.
rocker8Aug 12, 2010
Android Rocks
ghrayfahxAug 12, 2010
Until Sony either makes every UMD game available on the market, or creates a UMD reader that you can hook to your computer (or more likely PS3) then I can't see this taking off.
Maybe once someone hacks it to allow it to play bootlegs...
neotechniAug 14, 2010
Agreed. Go is proof of that.
trifoldAug 12, 2010
Oh man, for the 8 minutes I'll be able to play this before the battery dies, this is going to be awesome.
nascenttAug 12, 2010
Woah hold on tehre... If you turn off wifi, you'll be able to get 10 minutes.
useragainAug 12, 2010
I loved the gameboy advance and as a kid I always thought it would have been awesome if it had been a phone as well. i've held out on buying any of these new fancy phones for something i really want...so this better not suck like the n-gage. you have potential here fellas, don't screw it up!
lukas1051Aug 12, 2010
I used to have an iPhone on contract, and I recently had the choice to upgrade to an iPhone 4, but I chose a HTC instead. It's much better as a phone, I love the Android operating system. I just stuck an old sim card in my iPhone and all I use it for is the games now. Let's face it, the iPhone is by far the best mobile phone for games, but a PSP phone... that's on a whole new level. Doodle Jump is pretty good, but Motorstorm and GTA are better.
sindexAug 12, 2010
yeah, but can it make phone calls? It is still a phone, right? Let's not lose sight of that.
geenopeAug 12, 2010
I don't expect PSP-quality games. That would just kill the battery in under 5 minutes, but I do expect games that are better than what the iphone can achieve.
Closed AccountAug 12, 2010
The iPhone can achieve incredible games... it just doesn't because people apparently are not willing to pay for quality titles. People think a $3 game is expensive, it's ridiculous.
geenopeAug 12, 2010
I spoke too soon anyway - http://kotaku.com/5611523/id-unleashes-rage-on-the-iphone that's ridiculously amazing
neotechniAug 14, 2010
Wow, that's the first game that looks remotely as high quality as a PSP game
