Symbian is an OS built for the past. Their stubborn refusal to move forward is going to seal their fate in the smart phone sector.
That said, their hardware is competitive, and Nokia is certainly a leader when it comes to photo and video quality. But without the software backing it, adoption will be limited to Nokia fans. And riding on the success of your past only lasts so long.

I definitely read that headline as saying that the N9 will run a Sybian. My interest was piqued immediately.

I read somewhere that Nokia will keep Symbian to the low end to mid range phones... while the newer MeeGo will be used on high end phones e.g. future N Series phones.

I've used symbian for a number of years (5-6?) and a number of handsets. However in recent years symbian has felt very tired. There's bugs/issues/limitations that remain after many years & the OS does just not cut it any more.
This year I moved to Nokia's N900 (maemo) and have to say the device works great - and I'm delighted with it. Meego is effectively a nerge of maemo with intel's moblin and hopefully will be just as good.
HOWEVER the killer issue is around the overall ecosystem
a) It needs to be easy, efficient to develop applications for & retail them through a store
b) The store needs to be easy to use for the end consumer
The current OVI store is a very poor/pale copy of the apple or android stores.
Developing has a much bigger up-front investment (IMO) - tools are less well put together, more fragmented, so many of those simple "fart" apps etc (which may make money) never appear...
