One of the only gripes I had with the Droid was the less-than-stellar keyboard.
Glad to see that the Droid 2 got not only a spec bump, but a completely redesigned keyboard!

Ive seen this on a few devices, it might be along the lines of some android new standard or something. I am not a fan though.
doshindudeAug 10, 2010
...So it's basically the Droid X mini?
What's the real difference between the two other than size?
chimpchimp3Aug 10, 2010
Well the biggest thing would probably be the hardware keyboard, which the Droid X lacks.
Closed AccountAug 10, 2010
True, but with a 4.3 inch screen, I've had no trouble typing on it.
0a0563Aug 11, 2010
right, and swype is pretty cool. i don't miss a physical keyboard either
tedwardkAug 10, 2010
Doesn't have a faster processor? This article seems to not mention that.
ajdelarosa45Aug 10, 2010
R2D2, that is the difference. Sadly I already bought my droid x. Plus the keyboard already mentioned and the screen sizes I would guess, but R2D2 : (Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
isewiseAug 10, 2010
The Droid 2 has a TI OMAP 1Ghz processor. The original droid has a 550Mhz TI OMAP
solkreAug 10, 2010
I feel like a heel wanting to upgrade my original Droid already. Anyone who re-upped when the original came out can't get this phone at a discount though :9
dutchsaintAug 10, 2010
Meh, I don't like the design. Also, this probably means no more updates for my original Milestone. Why, for s**t's sake, is there a lock on those bootloaders? We'd be getting user-made updates long after motorola stopped updating.
jurybenAug 10, 2010
gah,
i was gonna buy a driod x tomorrow.
wut do?
thelostviking22Aug 10, 2010
I can't decide between the Droid X and HTC Incredible, but this doesn't really make the decision any harder. Not a fan of QWERTY keyboards.
I'm upgrading from the original BB Storm, in case you were wondering.
ajdelarosa45Aug 10, 2010
I was going to get the incredible originally but then the X dropped and I returned the incredible. The X is kind of big but I haven't had any trouble carrying it around. Also, I heard the Incredible had trouble with the screens becoming detached. I had the storm originally. They Android program has a lot more apps but it will take some time to get used to. It isn't as user friendly as blackberry's system
thelostviking22Aug 10, 2010
The X does have a bigger screen, which I like, and the HDMI output, which I like. BUT, at the top where the camera sticks out, I don't like. The Incredible has a more sleek design, which after having my Storm in its Otterbox case and realizing just how HUGE that is, I like. It does seem that the Android OS is harder to use. My BB was my first smartphone and it really was so easy to use and get used to.
thelostviking22Aug 10, 2010
BTW, if I may ask, what came with the phone? Just a wall charger and USB cable?
ajdelarosa45Aug 10, 2010
Yes, just a phone charger and the usb cable. You have to plug the usb cable into the charger base as well. It does have the standard headphone size jack though unlike the storm so it isn't hard to find headphones. Not sure why we are being dugg down...
huntmolAug 10, 2010
Me too!
I have come to loathe the Storm with every fiber of my being.
Every time I see a Droid commercial on TV I just glare at my phone and remind myself that it's only a matter of weeks until I am free of its incompetence.
plncrzyAug 10, 2010
I chose the Incredible over the X.
The X was just too damn big to carry around in my pocket. The big pull to the X is watching videos/movies on it's "huge" 4.3" screen. Well, perhaps I'm just not "with it", but I don't find myself wanting to watch feature-length movies on my phone all that often. The Incredible is more-than-adequate for YouTube and/or flash videos.
I'm also not a teenage girl so I don't feel the need to send 800 text messages a day. The on-screen keyboard is fine for my needs, and Swiftkey makes it just about as good, if not better, than a physical keyboard.
2 weeks with my Incredible and I don't miss my Blackberry Curve at all.
thelostviking22Aug 10, 2010
Yeah, I wouldn't bother to watch full movies on my phone, either. But, being able to connect my phone to a TV and watch a youtube video or two is fairly neat.
I'm also not a teenage girl, but I am a college student and talking on the phone in class is usually frowned upon, and just plain rude. I'm sure I could easily adapt to either keyboards.
I would like the X, if it wasn't for that damn bump they have at the top back of the phone. The Incredible is slightly more sleek in design.
plncrzyAug 10, 2010
"I'm also not a teenage girl, but I am a college student and talking on the phone in class is usually frowned upon, and just plain rude. I'm sure I could easily adapt to either keyboards."
I can assure you that your professors view students incessantly texting during class to be equally rude, just so you know.
If I want to watch YouTube videos on my TV, there are lots of other ways I can do it, so I really didn't need the ability to plug my phone into my TV.
To each their own.
miquonranger031Aug 10, 2010
So my Droid X is obsolete already. This has a slightly lower megapixel camera (so what? megapixels mean very little in terms of image quality), the same resolution screen, a keyboard, the same processor and GPU, and it even comes with Android 2.2, which the Droid X has yet to receive (until "early September" which is weeks after this comes out).Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
scuba7183Aug 10, 2010
In the same boat with my Droid (1.0?)
vtorchAug 10, 2010
The X still has better specs. Plus it has 16GB microSD Card where the Droid 2 has 8.
Closed AccountAug 10, 2010
How is it obsolete?
emot1conAug 10, 2010
I'm an iPhone 4 user, but now I wish there was a "get out of jail free" card.
etx313Aug 10, 2010
And it still looks like crap. Looks like I will continue waiting to upgrade.
trumpsbrahAug 10, 2010
Why is Verizon charging $20/month for a feature (mobile hotspot) that is built into the Android 2.2 OS? My nexus one can do this for no extra charge...
Closed AccountAug 10, 2010
Because they may feel that the payment covers the extra use of their network when you're hammering it with up to 5 WiFi devices, instead of just a phone.
spire3660Aug 10, 2010
I have free wifi hotspot for at least the next 2 years on my Palm Pre Plus from Verizon and the phone was free.
kmyeAug 10, 2010
Because even the best phone companies like nothing more than bending their best customers over a rail...
waltaaronAug 10, 2010
Verizon and Google have other plans for your mobile data privileges. Better bail out now before they start charging extra to use bit torrent or streaming sites. Then all the other carriers follow suit because they are leaving money on the table.
Read through the Google/Verizon proposal on Engadget. For the first time ever i'm a little concerned about net neutrality in the wireless area. These two giants are drawing up proposals trying to "keep the internet open". This is not a good thing. Everyone equates the word "open" as a benefit of the Android OS, and some people will mistake "open internet" as a good thing for the end-user when it comes to wireless providers
In fact "open internet" really means they want to keep their options open when it comes to possible profits in the wireless game. The proposal states that wireless companies would have to speak openly on the matter if they chose to start charging for bit torrent, for example.
Sorry i'm ranting. I'm just concerned about the future of this whole thing. The proposal just relates to wireless networks, but they have the biggest potential to nickel and dime us now that we are all worshiping our devices like gods. Plus wireless internet is the future for most of us.Things like tethering should be included in the bandwidth we pay for on a monthly basis and that's it, I don't want to start seeing them segment that bandwidth into payment levels like they used to try with data packages.
Sorry I feel like I just lectured you. Anyway, yeah, WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH TETHERING? I MEAN CMON I ALREADY PAY FOR DATA SERVICE FROM YOU!

My only gripe
I just got the Moto Droid about three months ago and now this comes out and I want it
woofermazingAug 10, 2010
The Droid X and Droid 2 were known to be on their way 3 months ago, and you probably got your Droid cheaply if not free if you upgraded your contract.
tablatronixAug 10, 2010
I use the lip on the bottom to hold the phone when reading alot, I dont know if I like the omission of it in the design.
The larger keyboard might be worth it though. I didn't see processor specs.
homercles337Aug 10, 2010
So, verizon is going to hamstring its froyo release? Guess im going to root mine.
0a0563Aug 11, 2010
root what? if you got the original droid, froyo is being rolled out. beginning with droid x you can root it but you still can't load any other rom.
homercles337Aug 11, 2010
"This is the week that the original Droid will be getting the Android 2.2 update, but it looks like that update won't be bringing two of the most oft-requested features: tethering and a mobile hotspot."
http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/02/motorola-says-original-droid-doesnt-have-the-hardware-to-supp/
0a0563Aug 11, 2010
oh, root for tethering. yeah, that makes sense.
0a0563Aug 11, 2010
as long as it has motoblur and encrypted bootloader stay away from motorola. android on newer motorola devices is highly modified, full of bugs and because of the encrypted bootloader you cannot get rid of it.
