i'm really f**king tired of this s**t. everyone agrees, we don't need the same comment, multiple times, every f**king thread. i mean no personal offense here, i'm just annoyed by these stupid trends.. it's like YouTube leaked in through the firewall.. if you have nothing to add to the discussion, just stfu.
on topic, it's the same old story. Lawyers demand protection money for your browsing habits, otherwise publicly disclosing them for name & shame.. can we honestly believe that 'gay-torrents' wasn't chosen for this explicit purpose? i should think a great portion of users would be out and proud but we're naive if we're to think that the anti-piracy industry hasn't factored in the number of still-closeted users who would pay out just about any sum to protect their anonymity in such a controversial case.
they can keep toppling trackers, keep preying on end-users and even target private communities. technology can and will continue to evolve. dark-nets will crop up, encrypted channels will become defacto standards. the attorneys charged to fight these cases are well aware, but the vultures will continue to circle whilst there is still meat to be had.
if the trend continues, and worsens, the internets will answer. it's not the first time encrypted pathways have been discussed, if they continue to blackmail their own customer-base like this, they will loose whatever lingering sense of control they had and in the process, empower a new generation of disillusioned file-sharers who only support independently produced content, and actively disseminate copy-protected media from larger facets of the militarised *entertainment* industry.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

They're all so f*cking stupid. Seriously, when I heard something like "a quick google search will show you there's piracy everywhere" (or the likes of it) makes me think some people are really living like it's 1990. Hello people, we live in times where it's easy to share. Geez, work with it, instead of fighting it. Distribute at low cost, stop stealing, and people will start looking. It's so simple, yet these people in suits are too stupid to realize it.

themadmuleJul 25, 2010
The Hurt Locker was a pretty mediocre movie.
dsmxJul 25, 2010
It was still better than Avatar.
kinseyincanadaJul 26, 2010
before the whole lawsuit happened the majority of digg praised The Hurt Locker.
davenp0rtJul 26, 2010
@kinseyincanada: I downloaded it after it won Best Picture, expecting a movie to knock District 9 out of the water. I was sadly mistaken and pretty vocal afterward that D9 should have won Best Pic.
rompom7Jul 26, 2010
I haven't seen Hurt Locker, but surely it was not as bad as District 9?
Closed AccountJul 26, 2010
@DAVENP0RT
I thought Inglourious Basterds should have won and I was somewhat surprised Avatar didn't win just because it was Avatar. Hurt Locker was really inaccurate in its depiction of EOD and has little re-watch value (imo). District 9 was an enjoyable movie, but was overshadowed by the other movies in the Best Picture category.
mandraqueJul 26, 2010
The Hurt Locker is an amazingly detailed movie. For me it gets better every time I watched it. I downloaded it after I heard about it from w.e. film festival it came out of. I downloaded it before it came out in theaters, but it was only in theaters for one weekend. So f**k em, I was gona pay to see it, but if you arent gona give good movies their proper time in theaters, then you dont deserve my money.
@DAVENP0RT: Distric 9 is horrible movie. When I saw it, it trully pissed me off how it is a perfect example of what is wrong with Hollywood. All look and pretentiousness over substance. The movie had such a great pretense and set up, but it throws it all way by ending up being nothing more that a shot em up!
kronos6948Jul 25, 2010
I refuse to even watch it.
Not out of some misplaced support for piracy, but because it didn't even interest me.

Closed AccountJul 26, 2010
I find it interesting that digg users will so often pretend that pirating is a victimless crime, yet you got +117 diggs for insinuating that you'd hurt the producers of the hurt locker by pirating their next film.
Digg users are like everybody else and I'm probably not much of an exception: in the end, we believe what we want to believe.

Sounds like a calculated entry into private-tracker lawsuits. They're hoping for something along the lines of "First they came for the gays, and I was silent".

I thought the same thing... It's like, dude, I have an RSS that automatically downloads my TV shows for me while I sleep and then I watch them on my big ass TV when I wake up and I didn't even have to go through the *hassle* of filling out billing information...
That being said, I do subscribe to a complete satellite TV package at my house, but considering that at least 50% of the shows I watch are UK/AU I sometimes don't feel like waiting for a US/Canadian channel to re-broadcast them...
tob3zJul 25, 2010

bittorrent is old news. Ever since they instituted BS throttling in canada, smart users up here have moved to direct-download sites. Why bother with a badly seeded torrent when you can get a fast download from one of the hundreds of direct download sites out there. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
w1cked1Jul 26, 2010

non00bJul 26, 2010
a megaupload download hits 900k-MB a second instantly
w1cked1Jul 26, 2010
s**t like that is an option for some files, some of the time, but to tout it as an alternative to bittorrent for all things is utter f**king nonsense.
It is also hardly instantly when you have to wait over a minute for your free download ticket. 900k-MB, what?
What you're talking about is a paid members**t from a single source. What if it doesn't have your desired file? What if your connection to them is not the best? What if your ISP "network manages" their service as well? Bittorent will dance circles around that bulls**t.
pipsquillionJul 25, 2010

you'll still appear on the tracker but you won't be able to establish a connection with a blocked IP address.
if the moles are using a residential connection on a private server, there's little chance it would be on the blocklist, though.
newerakbJul 26, 2010
Yes...until the investigators get a new IP or use a different computer. So, basically no. It doesn't stop anyone but the laziest of investigators.

Reminds me off the old scam where you pretend to sell a product...say, a double ended dildo. You market it and accept payments over the phone, mail or internet with the express agreement to deliver the product. After a week, you send an apology note that product has been discontinued, and to please accept the refund payment. Which is printed on a large novelty check with your logo, 'I'm A Gay Fag Double Ended Dildo Production Company". The scam is that people don't want to be outed so they won't go to their local bank and cash the refund check.
They are expecting to settle each and every one of these cases because the defendants won't be able to absorb the repercussions in their professional lives when the local court has them on the docket for this. This is a massive privacy concern as well, as outing these people also sets them up for targeting from bigot organizations.
thereyagoJul 26, 2010
so you saw lock stock and two smoking barrals as well? good scam though
necronomicanaJul 26, 2010
Jesus, just look up the quote in imdb and copy/paste next time.
Listen to this one then; you open a company called the Arse Tickler's gentlemen Fan Club. You take an advert in the back page of some gay mag, advertising the latest in arse-intruding dildos, sell it a bit with, er... I dunno, "does what no other dildo can do until now", latest and greatest in sexual technology. Guaranteed results or money back, all that bollocks. These dills cost twenty-five each; a snip for all the pleasure they are going to give the recipients. They send a cheque to the company name, nothing offensive, er, Bobbie's Bits or something, for twenty-five. You put these in the bank for two weeks and let them clear. Now this is the clever bit. Then you send back the cheques for twenty-five pounds from the real company name, Arse Tickler's gentlemen Fan Club, saying sorry, we couldn't get the supply from America, they have sold out. Now you see how many of the people cash those cheques; not a single soul, because who wants his bank manager to know he tickles arses when he is not paying in cheques!

It's pretty clever to go after a gay private torrent site. They send out the settlement letters and most will settle or be outed in the form public lawsuit records and an open court.
uberdugerJul 26, 2010
I don't get who all these people are that torrent professional pornography. Just download amateur stuff - the actors/actresses don't look nearly as depressed/coked-out/diseased.
kaiosamaJul 26, 2010
It is mostly amateur stuff though.
As a matter of fact it's amateur, professional, and everything in between.
diemunkiesdieJul 28, 2010
Amateur stuff has zero production quality. And by that I mean they all use webcams and VHS tapes. If they just turned on the lights and bought a low-end current digital camera for about $150, the quality of stuff available would shoot through the roof!
chriscanadaJul 26, 2010
They have been going after this site for almost a year already. I'm a member and members on the site are constantly getting letters. A lot of people are in the closet and want to stay that way and this really drives fear into them. It's been some of the most successful anti-piracy tactics as one of these letters could actually kill someone.
zylogJul 26, 2010
FTA: “I am always surprised that users would deal with torrent sites and all the hassle that requires instead of streaming through LucasEntertainment.com, but I guess there are many people out there who have endless patience.
> Well no s**t, first figure out why so many people do it, maybe then you'll see the problem
kaiosamaJul 26, 2010
Boy am I glad I downloaded the Hurt Locker *prior* to the Oscar nomination.
brianmp007Jul 26, 2010
I honestly don't understand how this can hold up in court. How can they tell who actually downloaded the movie on that IP address? That would be like someone getting stabbed with your knife, without you knowing, and you get charged for the stabbing. Granted its suspicious, but its all circumstantial evidence. This is no hard evidence of the person downloading the movie.
diggimatorJul 26, 2010
Yeah, they sue public trackers but not enough to be any real deterrent. They should sue public trackers more to get the deterrent thing working first before bothering to waste their efforts on private trackers. Also, they should work on selling the stuff they have copyright over instead of region blocking their customers, before suing them.

For the more serious:
Before you do anything install: Truecrypt (http://www.truecrypt.org/ and encrypt your entire system disc, and add another OS in a hidden container that requires you to boot with a special key-file that only exists on a flash-drive. Store all of your files in that container. Multiply layers of encryption are your friend.
