I guess I'm jaded in that I can just call people with my phone without downloading prerequisite apps.
clevercommenterAug 14, 2010
Damn, you're so lucky.
jhorraAug 14, 2010
You must not have an iPhone
philbertAug 14, 2010
Not to mention paying an extra $15 a month.
lovekAug 14, 2010
I guess I don't get it. I have an iPhone 3GS and I've never had any problems with it. I'm not an Apple fanboy and REALLY won't be upgrading to the iPhone 4, but I've been really happy with my 3GS.
Hm.
ssomu007Aug 14, 2010
Take and do the effective and efficient. does it meet both requirements?
clevercommenterAug 14, 2010
Well in business it is important to appear to keep up with trends. Blackberrys are so 2000.
hipmanAug 14, 2010
Hardly.The Iphone is a toy.not a business tool.
austrologiAug 14, 2010
Does Digg get a commission of this free advertising?
fattymageeAug 14, 2010
I'm really glad I ad-block digg. I read enough bulls**t ads already that "make" the front page.
dougs55Aug 14, 2010
The article was extremely non-critical. If your AT&T reception is a problem doesn't it affect data as well ? And wouldn't real business users just go for the unlimited plan if they wanted to save money ?
Wierdly, the article advertised this app as a money saver and listed expensive as one of its cons.
catchpenAug 14, 2010
Not free $15 a month.
s0nicfreakAug 14, 2010
Who said it was free?
catchpenAug 14, 2010
I wondered that too after I mentioned it.
oda1Aug 14, 2010
No one had to say it was free. I was close to reading the article until I learned it was not free. I'll stick with Skype.
s0nicfreakAug 14, 2010
Right at the top it says "Cons: expensive"
toxicgAug 16, 2010
Yeah, but if you want to call out/in with an app that functions identical to the phone calling on the iPhone this is it. Best $15/mo I spent. Doesn't feel like a Hack app like Skype. This is what Skype should be.

Line2 is terrible. It took forever to actually get setup because it refused to recognize legitimate phone numbers. And support was no help at all. Just reading off a script "when" you could actually get a hold of them. And dropped calls when it was actually running. Lol. Bad reception with AT&T was way better than line2.
fthead9Aug 14, 2010
Have to disagree, my experience with Line2 has been great. I can actually use my iPhone to make calls at home, zero bars on AT&T. Google Voice doesn't work since all it does is route my call to a number - no Voip calling option. I tried Skype but to have a real number you end up paying and then they charge for voicemail too plus if I don't have a WiFi connection it doesn't work. I can still use Line2 in my car if I have a decent 3G or Edge signal. Can't wait until they add SMS.
gefahrAug 14, 2010
buried for using "quotes" for emphasis.. sorry.
we must stop this trend at all costs.
toxicgAug 16, 2010
My setup was quick, within 2 minutes. And that was even checking between setting up through the app on the iPhone and then deciding to do it online where I could assign a 800 number for the 2nd line. An 800 number with no extra fees is great for my business BTW.
nedlawsonAug 14, 2010
iPhone is great but seems Android Handphone market is exploding at an impressive rate of 32 per cent very month. Check it out at http://bit.ly/d0dWyk

ATT doesn't suck in my part of the world. Big red is the one that blows.
coverage wise that is.
Now sucking on the tit of jobs is something that does suck about ATT. I would have loved some more Android love with ATT before the Samsung Captivate.
fjortisarAug 14, 2010
Now, why will they allow this, but not Google Voice.
s0nicfreakAug 14, 2010
What? They do.
fjortisarAug 14, 2010
You can only use the website, which Apple has no control over, obviously. They never approved the app, and with Apple approving this it I can't really find a reason they won't allow the G Voice app.
jrr6415sunAug 14, 2010
no they don't, apple blocked the google voice app, you can only access it by using safari.
s0nicfreakAug 14, 2010
Google Voice app != Google Voice
as9332Aug 14, 2010
Just an FYI, you can download the Vonage app for free from the app store and make unlimited calls all over US for free.
It doesn't receive calls, and only works on WiFi. But it works well, and free is free.
jrr6415sunAug 14, 2010
why would anyone use this over skype or google voice? skype costs $3 a month (not $15 like line2) and google voice is free...
jwdavAug 14, 2010
I use it primarily because I have unlimited incoming calls. If I dial out using Line 2, there is no charge. Like Google voice, it allows you to manage different numbers with rules for each. Unlike Skype, the app doesn't need to be running to receive calls, and the number people dial is your regular number or numbers. Finally, Line 2 have toll free numbers so people can call you without toll charges.
Totally worth $15 for me.
jrr6415sunAug 14, 2010
google voice does everything that line 2 does except toll free numbers.
skype does the VOIP with free outgoing calls.
To get incoming calls you can use google voice.
So the only reason to use line2 is if you want a toll free number otherwise you are wasting $15 a month.
jwdavAug 15, 2010
google Voice does not have callback and, for me, does not work in Canada.
Callback = unlimited cell talk time with the minimum plan
Toll Free = saves people who call me $$ and saves me $$ when roaming outside my call area
Everything Google Voice & Skype offer
Works with my regular numbers
Works Internationally
Cheap at $15/Mo - if you can take advantage of the benefits.
lohphatAug 14, 2010
I've had this functionality on my t-mobile phones for several years now: UMA calling.
It tunnels GSM over wifi for unlimited calling for $9.95 a month. No extra number needed.
When I'm outside the US and connected to wifi, the phone thinks it's in the US. No roaming charges!
xenplexAug 14, 2010
That's simply crap in my opinion.
When you have no WiFi, this app is pretty useless. So when you're on the road, this app/service doesn't make a difference. Yes, they support 3G too, but when the AT&T connection sucks, so does the 3G network on the road.
Call forwarding to your VOIP/SIP etc number, there are already a bunch of apps that are doing this for free (at least for Android) without a monthly subscription.
Are am I missing the "WOW" behind this?
bennygeoAug 17, 2010
Exactly, unless you are sitting at a desk all day, cell signal is total crap and have WiFi, what's the point? And if you are sitting at a desk, use a landline.
icndvlAug 14, 2010
My jailbreaked iphone works great with skype. And it doesn't cost me anything besides the skype subscription.
antdudeAug 15, 2010
Article is gone, http://rorr.im/digg.com/tech_news/make_iphone_calls_even_when_at_t_coverage_sucks/ still has it!
toxicgAug 16, 2010
Got it and it workes perfectly (using on iPhone 4).
$14.95/mo. is a deal and I'll tell you why.
• Ditching my LAN line - saved $25/mo
• About to downgrade my minutes from AT&T - savings around $30/mo
• Will buy call forwarding from AT&T for $2.75/mo. and it forwards my iPhone number calls to my Line 2 phone number (can turn this one and off on iPhone - sweeeet!) - saves even more minutes (might be able to downgrade minutes even more as I watch my minute count)
Not to mention the extra features (conf calling, etc.) and having an extra line, I expect to save at least $40/mo or more
Best part is I can now get a clean call in/out of my home where AT&T's signal sucks. Outside my home the signal is usually great though.
