There's no doubt that he's an amazing kid and a bright entrepreneur, however it should be said that his initial accomplishment was achieved by copying an already established business plan (Mac Heist). So it's not as if he had an original idea, ran with it and saw success.
That's not to detract from his smarts, however. Plenty of people encounter novel approaches to business and never have the wherewithal to turn them into successful ventures of their own.
wussAug 13, 2010
the vast majority of successful business's aren't successful by merit of an original idea. People 2nd and 3rd to market are always the smarter ones because they're copying a business model that's already proven, and in a space with almost no competition.
Here's the thing about doing your own business, DOING is 100% what makes you successful. No one ever got rich just thinking about ideas without executing. A guy who's thinking about the next great invention has nothing on the guy that sells ice cream in the park.

Yeah, great, I'm supposed to be f**king happy for the kid? Why should I be happy for someone who's got more money and success than I do, at a younger age? Seriously, why should I care?
I've never understood why people say things like, "Good for him" or "Wow, he's an amazingly smart kid!!!". I legitimately don't feel that way at all. I'm never happy for the success of others, and I truly feel better when I see people I know struggle. I take joy when I see people lose their jobs, or have their homes foreclosed upon. I like seeing people in a worse situation than me. It makes me happy. Legit happy. I never feel joy for people who are in a better situation than me. Never.
I 100% hope that something bad happens to this kid or his family, and the remainder of his life is a joyless struggle.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I make good money and I work really f**king hard every God-damn day, but I hate that I wake up earlier than everyone else, work longer hours, and still there are people who are more successful than me without putting in the work that I do.
I know people who had no ambition and no desire to work hard who have fallen ass backward into money, all the while I'm stuck busting my God damn ass to make ends meet. Explain to me how that's f**king fair? Why should my "friend", who I've known since the 1st grade and has no ambition at all, be able to sit at home all day with over $500K in the bank that he won from a f**king lottery ticket when I have to bust my ass every God damn f**king day to get by? winginAug 14, 2010
Hard work, and luck both play a part in what happens in our lives.
Success isn't just about money.
It sounds like what you're really angry about is that your friend who cares less about money than you, won a lot of money and you didn't. You're maybe angry that other people you know don't have your same perspective on how unfair that is. It is unfair. It's also unfair that you have enough food while millions of children and hard working parents, don't.
Your life will be more satisfying for you if you remember how lucky you are instead of how lucky you aren't.
It will also be more satisfying if you wish other people well with their lives - basically this lets you feel part of humanity instead of keeping you isolated in the way you are now.
Anyhow, I wish you well. I hope you get over this issue.

1. I don't know how hard you work but you still have time to come to Digg and follow up your own Thread.
2. I guarantee you, that you will always had to work harder than the next guy to get to the same place, mainly because your attitude is so s**tty, all thing being equal people will choose the fun, friendly guy over you. Besides you're probably ugly too.
3. Stop belly-aching about how hard you work, if you want to see hard work, I can take you to the kitchen of any restaurant in NYC and show you people working 12 hour a day 6-7 days a week for way less than minimum wage, when their day is done the go on to share a room with 4 other dudes, and they manage to send more than half of what they earn back to their families. People look down on them and call them "wetbacks" "chinks" and are treated like dirt
4. LIFE IS NOT FAIR, you can be miserable about ti, or make the best of it. Those decisions are self-reinforcing.

How about stepping up to embrace life for what it is instead of bitching about it. For every successful person who doesn't deserve it, there are an equal amount of people who deserve more... but don't receive it. That's just the luck of the draw or fate. Kids that are spoiled rotten and get everything vs the decent kids who lose their parents to divorce, are born into poverty, or get cancer and die young. Sometimes life just sucks. BUT, you can stand a better chance of getting more, or having a happier life if you get off your ass and do something. Being jealous of another is NOT going to suddenly make you better or solve your issues. It will only make you bitter and pretty much guarantee that you'll always be a loser.
You have to invest in life or you'll get nothing in return (unless you're extremely lucky). Some of us are not going to win the lottery, or be born with good genes, or have love in our lives. The people who draw the short stick and still manage to come out on top are those who understand that life is what you make of it and they are willing to do something about it. People like Steven Hawking, or that dude who was born with no legs, or the kid from Iraq who was set on fire.... etc. They all decided that they weren't going to waste energy complaining about life. Maybe you should do the same?
denizen42Aug 14, 2010

I find it odd that you are complaining that a 16 y/o kid has managed to make a competing company. A $50 price point isn't exactly copy right material either. And beyond that, you are complaining about competition! Some times making a product similar to a competitor's is what must be done to make it. Need I remind you who released the first legitimate multi-touch phone? Granted Goldman Sachs is in bed with the government so I agree with you there, but why should a successful individual be "socially responsible"? Nobody is a slave to society.
To say that someone absolutely must give back because of supposed ill-gained prosperity is a detriment to freedom.

So, when he donates to charity, its a good deed. If a CEO of a multinational corporation does it, he's just after the tax break.
Right?

Indeed. In ten years when this kid is a billionaire, he will be one of those greedy rich guys, who was born into wealth and doesn't contribute anything to society, who should be taxed at 90%. At least, that's how most of digg views all rich people over on the other recent thread about taxes on the super rich.
And no, he's not the exception; many, if not most living billionaires are self-made and started from humble beginnings (many from poverty). Many of them worked for decades before they could be counted among the super wealthy.
quaestor44Aug 13, 2010
Don't forget all the jobs, and opportunities for others that this greedy capitalist created.
maskedslackerAug 13, 2010
You mean all 40 of them?
rahsutAug 13, 2010

patrickbrownAug 14, 2010
Why is it wrong to tax a billionaire 90%? I guess $100 million just doesn't go that far anymore.
Closed AccountAug 14, 2010
PatrickBrown, regardless of how rich someone is, why should you punish someone with absurdly high taxes for working hard and earning a good living? As someone mentioned above, these are the people who create jobs for the rest of us!
inactiveuserAug 14, 2010
The bulk of labor hire is in small business. You should do your research.
atarioAug 14, 2010
When you make a billion dollars, 90% is not an absurd tax rate.
The fact is, once his tax rate is that high, he would of course not take all that money in salary but instead plow it back into the business -- building and expanding it, employing more people and generally helping the economy much more.
ravagedsoulAug 14, 2010
"The bulk of labor hire is in small business."
That depends on your definition of "small business", but "my research" seems to indicate the statement is false:
under 10 employees employs less than 20%
under 100 employees employs less than 40%
under a million in revenue employs about 15%
http://www.census.gov/epcd/www/smallbus.html
angelbunnyAug 16, 2010
@RavagedSoul
He is being taxed. We would never know he has made a million if he was keeping it under the table like many do.
That and I dare you to find a billionaire who started on welfare. What's that? You can't?
dralezeroAug 14, 2010
Well he made the money himself with his own hard work and just a few others. Rich people who get rich without doing anything and by paying very little to others to make their ideas real is another thing.

angelbunnyAug 16, 2010
I'm not a millionaire but I could easily be one.
What I did:
I wrote a bot that handles the stock market for me allowing me to invest with the smallest risk and yet still making much more than a CD.
I am a consultant (engineer/software dev). A trick of all trades from teaching to writing software for companies.
I've written software that automates work for different services in europe. Like, speeding up 10gigabit/s boxes using ram disks during file backups and generic stuff like that. If I get bored enough I'll probably make a vpn company that uses the boxes I have access to for free which might be my next project.
*yawns* I can keep going too. Mainly I'm just bored. One day when I couldn't get a job I thought, "if the market will not hire me then I'll hire myself" so I did.

"There is no magical formula to business, it takes hard work, determination and the drive to do something great."
Sure, there's always luck involved, but most "breaks" come when you work hard AND get lucky, and that includes stumbling upon a good idea.
barrettandersonAug 13, 2010
That being said, I was very tempted to bury him for owning Apple Cinema Displays. What a waste of money. If you came up with some sort of argument about the quality, fine, but only for people who do art/graphics/video professionally (I've never actually heard anything about the quality, and in fact it isn't even mentioned on the apple.com page promoting their displays, but I'm going to throw that out there so I can counter it right now).
macparrotAug 13, 2010
He made money...he bought the things he wanted. It's not really more complicated than that
(though I do agree that Apple displays are very over-priced)
barrettandersonAug 13, 2010
Mainly all my comment says is "He could have gotten something else just as good for a lot less money."
That being said, I fully support his ability to choose how to spend his money.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
dralezeroAug 14, 2010
His parents might have gotten him a Mac or he worked hard doing chores. I bet if he had a Windows PC and Dell monitor he wouldn't have been exposed to apps enough to get into the business.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
barrettandersonAug 14, 2010
dralezero: No one mentioned the mac, just the monitors. You can use non-apple monitors with a mac.
bosskeyAug 14, 2010
The article says "Three years later he got a Mac and taught himself web design. Four years later—at age 14, in 2008—he started his first company."
If that means he bought those Cinema Displays around 4 or 5 years ago, that's fine. Back then, the Cinema Displays were barely justifiable; they were probably one of the cheaper SWOP-certified IPS panel displays you could get. I own the 20" of that type, bought about four years ago, and I don't regret it.
Now, none of that is true today. Good quality monitors now cost much less than Apple's and I actually steer people away from today's Cinema Displays. But I can see where he made a decent choice a few years ago.

Instead of acting on it, I instead opted to slowly download porn via 28.8.

Good idea. Did you have financing? Any connections to manufacturers like Hon Hai? Distributors like Ingram Micro, ASI, etc? An engineer to confirm your design? The work ethic, speaking confidence, and free time to build the company?
Ideas are only a small part of a successful business.
frazzletAug 13, 2010
He clearly had help, probably financially from his parents. If it turns out his parents gave him a ton of cash to get him started then I'm as impressed. He absolutely has skill though, I just wounder how much of his success is down to himself.

Looking through history the revolutionary always gets shafted in the end. As in, person A makes a new product. They make bank and all is well. Person B sees this product and realizes they can make the same thing and have it be 10x more profitable. In the end everyone turns to person B for that product 30 years later and person A is either a small business now or is out of business.
I honestly can't think of a time were the original company to make a new product succeeded without someone coming in and taking it away in the end.

gerogeroheyAug 14, 2010
So true, I bet they don't mention stuff like both his parents had high level IT jobs earning top level salaries, experienced in running companies before, inherited their estate debt free from their grandparents. News stories are s**tty and try to sell hope so we'll end up trying hard and getting no where. Unfortunately not everyone can replicate those same circumstances. Malcome gladwell was right in saying that people take the credit but it was always a collective effort that causes something to be great. In this case it was all the bunch of cheap mac users.
I'm sure if 4 people pulled their salaries together, didn't eat for a whole year took all the money they saved and spent it on guerilla marketing bombardment and affiliate programs, the return with be phenomenal. the problem is finding those people you trust when you can't even trust your relatives because of bank debt and interest rates.
