FTA: A used engine is worth millions sold directly and many are rented out hourly for prices around $20-25,000 per month. "One engine has probably been on 50 airplanes," says Scroggins. "While you and I are talking, engines are being moved between airplanes, and parts are being pulled out to make better engines and then going on a wing."
Holy crap. I had no idea aircraft engines were shuffled around like that!
cawpinJun 23, 2010
I think that 50 number is a bit exaggerated.

They probably meant hourly as in time the engine is running. Hours on an aircraft engine is roughly the equivalent of mileage on a car.
shadowspawnJun 23, 2010
Engines are serviced and pulled based on their hourly usage.
So if an engine is rated at 2k hours, someone can put a price on that for 2k hours before it's inspected and pulled/repaired.
It does make sense if you think about how airplanes are serviced, based on an hourly basis of run time (from the time the pilot starts the engines until they are stopped)

Holy crap. I had no idea aircraft engines were whores.

The engine is probably the most valuable part. I used to work on Aero-Engines, one of those big fan blades at the front cost $22,000 on the engine I overhauled. The cheapest HP compressor blades (of which there are hundreds in a gas turbine) were about $350 each. That was only titanium ones, the inconel blades cost a fortune. Then you have all those units attached to it. It's easy money.

I was hoping that it was going to be about some crazy guy with a 747 in his backyard

You can really appreciate the complexity of an aircraft in that 3rd picture. It seems like million things could go wrong on an aircraft.
shadowspawnJun 23, 2010
All put together by companies who were the lowest bidder.
American components, Russian Components, ALL MADE IN TAIWAN!
buckygradJun 23, 2010
For some reason, I was expecting an article about how someone turned a 747 into some sort of "fun-house".
chas46Jun 23, 2010
If a car was worth as much as the jet it to would be worth going through.
