Yelp is the "Google of local". I like foursquare in theory, but it's near useless unless you are in a big city. You can't be the google of local when a search for my city returns 6 venues and yelp returns 10,003.

Gowalla is better imho. It's simpler. Better looking. And more restrictive/selctive in terms of proximity. The only thing it's missing is a "reward" for multiple check-ins over time.

I like Gowalla too, but it has much more lame venues like freeways, for example. They do need to get on the ball with the rewards, I totally agree. 4SQ has a lot of stupid venues too, don't get me wrong.

I'm really surprised that FaceBook hasn't come out w/ a location service, or at least bought one of the existing companies. If they do it w/ in the next few months, they will put 4Squre out of business in a second.

Of all of my tech friends and adequateness in my life, only ONE uses four square. I'm not sure how that equates to being the "google of local". The only reason people have even heard of it is because of sites like digg giving it artificial word of mouth.
