13% market share for bing is failry solid considering it is relatively new
themazzterAug 3, 2010
Isn't Bing the default IE search engine now though? I'm not impressed considering IE's market share.
manicleekAug 3, 2010
I wouldn't call it default, you choose what search engine you want on first use
megorAug 3, 2010
It's not, the default is msn.com, which uses bing but looks like crap. If they actually set IE use bing.com I wager their market share would go up more so.
Regardless the default(express settings) homepage for IE has not changed so that would not explain an increase in marketshare for bing. In addition IE is losing marketshare so if anything you would expect less people to use bing.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
eshinnAug 3, 2010
@The MAZZ
Isn't Google the default on Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Opera? I switched my safari search to Bing... which is amazing considering how much I detest Balmer.
linuxbeatswin7Aug 3, 2010
Isn't Bing / Yahoo the default on all new Apple products?
I use Google most of the time but for videos / images and perspective Bing is awesome- even using Mozilla on Linux....
stm24Aug 3, 2010
Nope it's not the default, IE asks you what you want as your default.
werfwerAug 3, 2010
came here to post this.
Closed AccountAug 3, 2010
Not surprising considering they made it default for IE.
greenmountainAug 3, 2010
But this has always been the case, and IE's share is down? So that is not likely the key factor.
My hippy chick friend loves the colorful picture, especially in contrast to the google white field.
It is refreshing to get off the white glare of the web.
But technically, they merit some credit, Bing is pretty good, the pic setup feels like next generation, compared to Google.
As far as finding things, I find things with both, have not really noticed any difference?
The next step should be to talk about Android, which is more interesting. This is an area one would not expect Google to be abble to waltz in and change the game, but they are.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
jsmith39Aug 3, 2010
The examples given of Google playing catch-up to Bing were pretty home pages and twitter results.
Really? The argument for Bing out innovating Google is including tween twitter comments and putting pretty graphics on the homepage?
stm24Aug 3, 2010
No it's not the default. When you download IE7 or IE8 or just got a new computer and open IE it asks you what search you want as default!
super6Aug 3, 2010
It's not really new, it's just MSN search/Live search with a new name
captininsanityAug 3, 2010
New names work wonders. Microsoft should probably change the name of IE when they finally get it standards compliant.
linuxbeatswin7Aug 3, 2010
untrue. it is a whole new division at Microsoft.
jakem1Aug 3, 2010
The search engine may have grown out of the old Live search engine but it's silly to say that Bing is just a rebranding. There are loads of new features that have been added to support search and make it easier to find things.

@ Mazz and foofighter -- How many mobile devices is google the default search engine?
zomboAug 3, 2010
not mine thats for sure
pr0t0Aug 3, 2010
Not Blackberry. Not only that, on my Storm2 you can't change it. You are stuck with Bing. You have to install the Google Search app if you want to use Google outside of browsing to it.
spazzcatAug 3, 2010
Another thing to think about is how much of that market share did they buy? And how long will it last?
myztryAug 3, 2010
13% market share is dismally low considering that about 90% of computers start off with a Microsoft dictated search engine meaning that 77% of those people move away from Microsoft's nominated search engines.
(yes, there are some recent changes to head off tiered monopoly legal issues but that's hardly relevant to the majority of computers yet)
jsmith39Aug 3, 2010
The examples given of Google playing catch-up to Bing were pretty home pages and twitter results.
Really? The argument for Bing out innovating Google is including tween twitter comments and putting pretty graphics on the homepage?
tugcow80Aug 3, 2010
Summarized FTA:
Bing has colorful background
Google switches to colorful background for 1 day and users revolt
Google gives allows option for colorful background
Article's conclusion:
Bing is making Google play catchup.
Looks like all the effort went into crafting a catchy and ran out of steam for the article. Buried for useless.
linuxbeatswin7Aug 3, 2010
Have you even tried Bing? Bing Videos and Images kick ass. I'm nowhere near a Microsoft fan but in reality Bing is offering some innovative stuff.
jakem1Aug 3, 2010
Yes but look at the things the article ignored:
- Google have just finished rolling out a major upgrade of their image search and it's an exact copy of Bings.
- Google just bought ITA so they could copy Bing's travel features.
- Google recently added a side bar (which is useless and pointless BTW) to their search results just to copy Bing.
In fact, I can't think of a single change that Google have made in the last year that isn't a direct copy of a feature that Bing offers.
jsmith39Aug 3, 2010
Linux: No I haven't mostly, because of need. I've yet to search for something on Google (my default search) and not find it, so I haven't changed.
Jakem: No doubt, my point was not that the two aren't trying to duplicate each others features, but more that the article was incredibly lame and pointless.
mbookmeyerAug 4, 2010
Anyone else hit with the virus that sets your search to bing and changes your default browser to IE? Innovative indeed... I'm sure virus writers have a vested interest in changing your search engine.. guess nobody has noticed.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
LosAlamosLabsAug 3, 2010
How did the article miss the image search? Bing's image search was miles ahead of Google's and just a few days ago, all of a sudden Google's image search is now a total Bing clone.
jackoftherealmAug 3, 2010
yea it was a wtf moment.
sandeepxAug 3, 2010
Why don't they make search results the same way? load the next page when scrolled down.
abudhuAug 3, 2010
Was the article updated after submission?
"Google has also borrowed Bing's look on its search results pages." Granted it did not go in depth, but it was mentioned.
themachine1Aug 3, 2010
That likely will be the future too. Anything Bing innovates will just be copied by Google. Only thing I hate is when Google makes it default. They should ALWAYS provide an option for the user to use the new feature or the old one.
gratAug 3, 2010
I was thinking the same thing -- the image search change was a clear response to Bing. Bing Maps is also adding a lot of cool features (such as Streetside) that Google Maps just doesn't have.
jakem1Aug 3, 2010
I think Streetside is just a Microsoft Research project at the moment but it will definitely be cool once it gets added to Bing Maps.
gerrylazloAug 3, 2010
Yeah, except the changes Google made suck sasquatch balls.
Don't pop up another window with the image when I get to the actual site! Are you f**king kidding me?
LosAlamosLabsAug 3, 2010
Yeah, that is completely annoying. It's a nice effect on a WordPress site when you click a thumbnail, but just get me to the site with the image as is, please.
jakem1Aug 3, 2010
Oh god yes!!! I knew I couldn't be the only one who thinks that that's just f**king stupid. In their rush to add something/anything to be slightly different they totally messed the whole thing up.
ndelangenAug 4, 2010
add &sout=1 to the end of the google images search url, and it will display it, old-style
elranzerAug 3, 2010
Bing Maps also totally kills Google's. Birdview and 3D are just awesome.
burylinkAug 3, 2010
Birdview rocks
jigorokanoAug 4, 2010
I used to check the traffic with Bing every morning, but now Google maps does the same thing... only about a hundred times faster. Everyone must be hammering the Bing traffic data in the morning, because I find it to be no longer usable much of the time.

linuxbeatswin7Aug 3, 2010
Bing and Google both are racing towards real-time search. Bing's image search is a prototype for web search in real-time. Bing's video search is pretty awesome, although some bugs in the preview with Firefox (go figure). Bird's Eye View is the bomb, and I can search for Linux desktop images on Bing in the sizes I like.
spazzcatAug 3, 2010
Don't care about bells and whistles when I am searching. What I care about is finding what I am looking for fast and in the first few hits. Google has always and still is the best at meeting this need.
nathanpondAug 3, 2010
I couldn't agree more, and I still use Google for the same reasons.
However I think we might be in the minority. I'm amazed at the number of people at my office (I support about 50 people from an IT standpoint) who have switched to Bing. When I ask why they prefer Bing, in almost every case the answer is "because of the really cool picture every day." It blew me away that someone would choose an inferior search product because of a picture, but I guess design sells...
The one person who had a different reason was a designer, and she said she preferred bing's images search, which is actually very valid.
solkreAug 3, 2010
Do they also have iPhones?
nathanpondAug 3, 2010
@solkre - Some do, primarily the mac users, but many have blckberries, palm pres, and android phones.
I see what you're getting at though. The reason bing is popular with "this crowd" is the same reason the iphone is
jakem1Aug 3, 2010
The thing is, Bing's search isn't that inferior. Google's not brilliant and I've started using Bing as a backup when Google can't find something. Most of the time Bing finds what I'm searching for.
At this point I'd say that I only stick with Google out of habit. I prefer the layout of Google results and I prefer the look of Google Maps. However, if Bing keep going the way they are I could easily make the switch.
dsmxAug 3, 2010
Bing can look nice as much as it want, but the search code still is nowhere near as good as googles.
bashmohandesxAug 3, 2010
That's because you can see both codes :D

It seems Microsoft is finally taking a page from Apple's book. Who needs the best functionality when it looks pretty?
morwyndAug 3, 2010
Worked pretty good for Vista. Wait--
pr0t0Aug 3, 2010
I get better, more relevant search results from Google than Bing...even when I'm looking for information that's on a Microsoft web site. Simply pathetic.
diceauAug 4, 2010
I've switched to Bing now because Google have a terrible Image search feature - it puts the image up in its own box while loading the page behind it. This of course resulted in a page that had a mock "finding heaps of problems on your computer" page and trying to force me to download their anti-malware software.
So, a big f**k YOU to Google for forcing me to force close Firefox because of their poorly thought out feature.
Bing works just as well, and I'm liking how there are fewer adverts coming up in the searches.
skeloothAug 3, 2010
Bing is okay. I still like Google better as a whole.
kerricklongAug 3, 2010
Bing is okay. I still like Google better as a whore.
skeloothAug 3, 2010
Bing is okay. I still like a Google of whores.
lanzeAug 3, 2010
I love bing! Google displays results in order of popularity, Bing actually catagorizes them in terms of relevance.
davecachiaAug 3, 2010
Out innovated because of a background? Google's searching capabilities far exceed Bing's.
bdog2g2Aug 3, 2010
When something looks pretty you really don't care how well it works....at least for some.
mindtriggerAug 3, 2010
I have actually found Bing to be quite good at returning the results I need. I treat it as my secondary search engine when I am doing difficult searches, and I enjoy it. Google is still tops, but Bing isn't far off.
entropyfanAug 3, 2010
That is bulls**t. Bing's search capabilities are about equal to Google's.
Which, if you think about it, is the problem. Few will change their habits for something that is 'just as good'
Why change then? Most switched to Google because it was measurably better at the time.
If nothing else, it is nice to see someone putting pressure on Google. Real competition keeps everyone running forward, and brings us better products all around.
mbookmeyerAug 4, 2010
Bing is garbage. It is just like all microsoft products, designed to waste your time. You might find what you want, but good luck! really... good luck

Noone has an email service even remotely comparable to GMail. The spam filter, unrestricted forwarding and great simple interface are all the best in the world. No competitors have the market penetration of Google Shopping either. It's not as if GMail of Google Shopping are untouchable, it's just that everyone else is s**t.
tearlockAug 3, 2010
Consider GMAIL and how it interfaces with Google Calendar and Google Voice and you have an email service that FAR surpasses other web based email.

Not to mention they were the only ones that implemented search into mail.
None of the eggheads at MS could think of that? What does MS do with their money?
charlesrayAug 4, 2010

dtwatsonAug 3, 2010
What we can get from this article? Bing is shiny and will attract many idiots. In the end, Google still has better search algorithms, better indexing over all, and a command-line-like search engine. For example - I can look up insecure security cams with Google. Final note: Jay Yarow is a very bias writer, a zombie of Microsoft, who cannot look at the technology as a whole. Just look at the articles he has written.

Google provides us with all these innovative wonderful free things from the revenue garnered through the use of it's services.
What does Microsoft give the end user except clones of the things Google brought to mass using said revenue?
Imagine if Microsoft had no one to follow. You could kiss all that wonderful free stuff goodbye.
gtragnarokAug 3, 2010
I saved hundreds on Bing Cashback. Got hundreds more from cheating Club Bing :D
myztryAug 3, 2010
You don't need to spend those thousands to get the advantages from Google. You gain the use of the free services no matter who is gullible enough to be funnelled into paid product placement.
Not that even a few hundred would provide those services, or those services would exist if Microsoft was in a dominant position and not trying to loss lead itself into position.
pxtlAug 3, 2010
Remember that Google Search is Google's cash cow. Their adwords and sponsored recommendations and whatnot are the main source of revenue for Google's empire.
So Google *needs* to rule the search market with an iron grip.
mweatherAug 3, 2010
Bing is great for niche searches like travel, but even Bing admits they'll never catch up to Google with their core search.
jiggawattAug 3, 2010
Hah, i use both side by side, and Google always gives me more relative search results. I used Bing for images for a while, but I still found better image results with the now old google search. Bing had it's fancy display, but that's all. My own experience is in contrast with what this article claims.

1fastdakAug 3, 2010
Google's bland a boring white page is one of the biggest reasons I use it.
I always hated most other search engines for all of the crap they throw at you. If anybody copied off of anybody its bing coping google I mean look a the two pages. Bing is almost exactly the same as google with a background and the search category moved down. Google has had this layout since I was a kid.
agrabesAug 3, 2010
The Bing Maps Bird's Eye View is the only reason I ever use Bing. That said, the feature is amazing and I would recommend that you try it. The only problem: it doesn't work properly in Firefox for some reason and I'm forced to fire up IE if I need to use it.
nickkukAug 3, 2010
"The only problem: it doesn't work properly in Firefox for some reason and I'm forced to fire up IE if I need to use it."
This is typical of Microsoft and one of the main reasons why I wont even consider using Bing Maps / Bing.
agrabesAug 3, 2010
Yeah, I'm not making any excuses for Microsoft, but I still really like the Bird's Eye View feature. I use it a lot at work to basically inspect power lines from my desk. It has saved a lot of trips to the field, and it usually has very high quality pictures. If it works at all, I'm happy.
zomboAug 3, 2010

Google added the sidebar yes and did a much better job at it. Google has been known to adapt its homepage based on search providers and user expectations by region, look at the chinese page etc..
MS and Apple now package Bing instead of Google this is where Google is going to start hurting but dont give me bulls**t about "innovation", the search results still suck at Bing.

You do realize that Microsoft makes over $10B a year in profits, right?
http://www.google.com/finance?q=NASDAQ:MSFT&fstype=ii
sab0tageAug 3, 2010
Microsoft's problem with Bing is similar to the Zune problem; in that with Zune (HD at least) they came out with some great hardware which got some fantastic reviews and bested the iPod, the Zune software is considered superior to iTunes. Unfortunately for MS, everybody already had an iPod and iTunes, and even though the Zune pass is well loved, people aren't going to move if they spent hundreds on music from the app store. For the record, I have neither a Zune or iPod.
With Bing it's more of a habit problem. I think Bing is really well designed, brings up some good links and the image and video search is fantastic, but I use Google. I just can't seem to persuade myself to not think "I'll google that". I think it's my age.
adamclifAug 3, 2010

In the interests of freedom( not everyone wants to be Google's bitch) and innovation, Microsoft efforts deserve a lot of praise.
linuxbeatswin7Aug 3, 2010
Microsoft has stated publicly that they intend to spend as much money as needed to beat Google in search users. Fact: Microsoft has s**tloads more money than Google. I would not underestimate Microsoft / Bing.
Also Bing = Yahoo search now (or being currently implemented). Guess who is the default search engine on Apple products due to anti-monopoly government regulation?
Finally, Bing video search kills Google.
Just don't count on Bing for in-depth Linux searches though.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Beep111Aug 3, 2010
It's not about good vs bad. People don't really care that much about innovation. Only techies such as myself care about that stuff. Most people want a reliable search engine they're used to using. Bells and whistles are only for the technically inclined. Which explains why Google has a large portion of the market share. Reliability, brand name and ease of use. Bing might be innovative, but Google is just going to take their stuff and continue onwards.
pika2000Aug 3, 2010
I don't know. As much as I want to stay away from Google and use alternative like Bing, the results still give Google ahead. I searched for Seagate Goflex. On Google, I got Seagate's site on the first link. On Bing, Seagate's site is way on the bottom. WTF? Also, Bing is really poor in searching international sites.
vspe0000Aug 3, 2010
I think the key for Bing is to redefine the "wants" of a search user and change what the consumer looks for in a search engine. Currently, they seem to be trying to reshape the landscape to "decision engines", where they would be the leader, given that it's a category they themselves are attempting to carve out. I think this is a smart marketing move, or at least the only way Microsoft can survive.
With simple design and functionality, Google established the era of getting information quickly and without clutter. It simplified search and taught the consumer to ask LESS from their default search engine. Not in terms of relevance or quality, but presentation. I started using Google because of it's simple interface, as opposed to Yahoo's default page, which overloaded me with information from the onset. I wanted to be overloaded with information AFTER the actual search, not before (thank you very much).
I think Bing will have to continuously pour in marketing dollars to convincingly reshape the landscape to their favor and have the consumer asking for a "decision engine". However, Google is holding most of the cards (i.e. market share) and can just follow suit, copying additional features that appear superior (as they've been doing). Sure, by doing so they may lose market share, as with the user backlash about the image background, but that's because Microsoft hasn't redefined the market yet. Once they do and most users are asking for the additional functionality/interface, Google can just piggyback with Microsoft doing the big spending.

"Years ago, for example, Google set itself apart from other search engines by focusing on making its homepage load faster than everyone else's, including a very simple design with a white background.
Then, last year, Microsoft launched Bing with a colorful, photography-driven design.
When Bing's look became popular, Google launched a feature to enable its users to make Google look colorful like that, too. For a day, Google even replaced its default background with an image, mimicking Bing's look. Google users were not impressed with the decision, however. They howled, and Google quickly reverted back to the plain white look."

Every time i search for images on google it crashes my browser. This is a new problem and I am on a PC with 8GB RAM. When it comes to images Bing outperformes every other search engine out there.
