Guess it's time to move on!
Closed AccountJul 26, 2010
You'd expect them to move to SAMOLED instead
Closed AccountJul 26, 2010
they CANT move to SAMOLED. Samsung can't keep up with demand for AMOLED right now! Thats why they're moving to LCD!
deslockJul 26, 2010
From what I gather, the reason AMOLED shortages exist for Samsung is that they are switching capacity to increase for Super AMOLED.
Thus the reason that the new Galaxy phones are using the SAMOLED.
Expect AMOLED shortages to remain and/or get worse. Or evolved your gadgets.

Is it true that AMOLED has worse visuals in sunlight, like near blank displays?
hackiewackieJul 26, 2010Submitter
I believe so
Closed AccountJul 26, 2010
I have a Desire.
In sunlight, I have to crank the brightness up to make it viewable - and even then it's a little hard to read sometimes. My screen protector adds to that.
ozroyJul 26, 2010
I don't know if it is worse than this display, but it is near unreadable in sunlight. It's one of the things I hate most about my phone.
commodusJul 26, 2010
A typical OLED or AMOLED display will "wash out" in bright daylight. Since it has no backlight and usually no way to control the effect of the sun, it becomes near-unusable.
The Super AMOLED screen in the Galaxy S (and Captivate/Fascinate/Epic 4G/Vibrant) gets over much of this, but then the phones have their own issues.
ianbirtwistleJul 26, 2010
It's the one problem I have with the phone, everything else works great but in sunshine it's a nightmare.
invaderdemJul 26, 2010
My HTC EVO is somewhat difficult to read in the sunlight, but not near-blank. At the same time, I don't know what kind of screen I have. Since this announcement is fairly recent, I'd guess I have the old screen type.
mbraynardJul 26, 2010
Zune HD is pretty readable in any light. Not sure if it's the tech as much as the implementation that is causing people problems.

theosterJul 26, 2010
i have the original Droid and you can't read it in direct daylight and even shading it with your hand makes it only barely readable. i think direct sunlight on any display is fairly useless (or difficult at best)
remy_lebeauJul 26, 2010
On my Nexus One w/ AMOLED, if I hold the phone so that it's parallel to the ground (like this _ rather than like this | ) and the sunlight is directly hitting the entire screen, it becomes very difficult to see. That being said, I generally view the phone while holding it upright, rather than flat to the ground, in which case the screen is quite visible no matter how sunny a day it is.
deslockJul 26, 2010
Comparing my ipod touch to my Nexus, in direct daylight they are both almost unreadable but the Nexus is slightly worse.
However, the Nexus still wins imo for one important reason... it has auto brightness control so that when in direct sun it cranks the brightness up to max automatically and is more readable.
For you folks that are having issues, switch your AMOLED devices to auto brightness. If you have a dark tinted screen protector though... you are SOL.
But please note, we're talking about "direct sunlight" not outdoors normal daylight.
usq1111Jul 26, 2010
" I thought they were no longer making the Nexus One."
absolutelytrueJul 26, 2010
I think they're still manufacturing them for Vodaphone in Europe
commodusJul 26, 2010
It's being made for carrier deals right now. If you're on Vodafone UK or KT in South Korea, you can get a Nexus One. Google has said it will probably add carriers now that you can't buy it online.

They're making it. Google just isnt selling it. You need to learn how to f**king read. TOOL.

htc is great, but they spit out phones way too fast
trey9128Jul 26, 2010
They certainly spit out phones way too fast for Apple, who are going to fall seriously behind, with their once a year refreshes.
HTC came out with the Nexus One in January. An upgraded version, the Incredible, was out by May, and there are strong hints that a 1.6 GHZ clocked version will be out by the end of the year.
deslockJul 26, 2010
How is more innovation faster "too fast"?
I don't understand this philosophy. The only people it is too fast for are the ones that can't stand to feel jealous that a new better phone is out.
Unless HTC was releasing crappier devices each time, why complain? Apple gets a couple months of being high end and then competitors beat it out for the next year or two (like the 3GS year with no major innovations).
All it does is benefit all of us consumers.
Get used to it.
buckrogers1965Jul 27, 2010
Innovation is when they come out with something new and original. Coming out with 50 variations on a theme is not innovation.
inphu510nJul 26, 2010
As compared to Samsung and LG?
phillyocJul 26, 2010
Nice. I am beginning to use my Droid more and more and am finding the battery life isn't so hot. Anything that gives me an advantage in this area is going to be more of a consideration in the future.
eroc668Jul 26, 2010
I'm sure you've heard this plenty of times, but if you haven't rooted your phone, you should. A rooted phone with smart overclock and underclock settings can really help both improve performance and boost battery life. For example, my Droid's processor is set to run at 800Mhz when the phone is in use and only 250 Mhz when the screen is off or the phone is charging. This way, I get a performance boost when I need it, a quicker charge, and much longer battery life. After a day of moderate usage, I usually have about 60% battery left and never lower than 40%. Its also a very simple process!
cawpinJul 26, 2010
"After a day of moderate usage, I usually have about 60% battery left and never lower than 40%. Its also a very simple process!"
So you didn't improve it in any way? My Droid has always been around that.
phillyocJul 26, 2010
It's rooted and running Cyanogenmod 5.0.8-Droid. I also have setCPU installed so I can overclock/underclock when needed but I find myself mostly using it to underclock when I know my battery is going to die.
eroc668Jul 26, 2010
Have you set any SetCpu profiles to automate the underclocking? I am running Bugless Beast V.04 and i get excellent battery life.

Plastic toys will be plastic toys. Even funnier: they can’t scroll one damn app list fluidly. Up to this day. Tell that to a Google drone and he will start fuming.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

As opposed to a phone with brittle glass and an antenna that is flawed?
I'm surprised you didn't go on about the Droid X "exploding". 9/10 on the trolling.
jabbrwockeyJul 26, 2010
More of a 7/10.
His grammar is is nearly spotless.
rudeturnipJul 26, 2010
I was this close: [--] to getting an Android-based phone until I compared the "fluidity" of my iPod Touch interface to my friend's Droid. This is precisely the reason I will simply wait for iPhone to come to Verizon. This could be as early as January 2011, but I've heard from people at the company that it's more like July 2011. Worth the wait to avoid frustration with a choppy UI.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
mgoulartJul 26, 2010
It's all based on contract or else Apple would have done released a Verizon version by now. Apple signed a 5 year contract with AT&T in 2007. 2007 + 5 = 2012.
And it's July as well.
ssj4vegita2002Jul 26, 2010
Launcher Pro FTW
trey9128Jul 26, 2010
Well, I have both a Nexus One, and an iPhone 3GS. The scrolling on the Nexus One is faster (as is just about every function). And the Nexus One body is metal, not plastic.
I guess you're just misinformed.
genmaJul 26, 2010
I have an awsome phone that implements this trivial feature much better than yours, and when I tell you about it you're gonna be so mad,
mymainmanJul 26, 2010
Who cares about the scrolling sometimes being a little jerky?
The rest of the OS is superior to the Iphone OS.
lukas1051Jul 26, 2010
This is good. I love my HTC Desire, but it eats up the battery pretty quickly. Good to know they're improving on a hardware front. This is clearly to compete with the iPhone 4's screen, which is simply phenomenal. I definitely think Android phones will overtake the iPhone pretty soon.
imustbeemoJul 26, 2010
AMOLEDs still use less battery power. These new LCD screens are better than other LCD screens but still not as good as AMOLED when it comes to power usage. HTC is doing this purely because of supply issues.
lukas1051Jul 26, 2010
FTA: "The company argues that Sony's design is a "comparable visual experience" and actually improves in areas where AMOLED normally wins, such as battery life."
I don't know if you're right or not, I don't know a lot about screens... but the article says the new screens have better battery life than AMOLED screen.
mooniniteJul 26, 2010
"I don't know if you're right or not, I don't know a lot about screens... but the article says the new screens have better battery life than AMOLED screen."
No it did not. The article said "improves" battery life. It did not say "better" battery life.
yogeshmanJul 26, 2010
But I got the best view in sunlight in my AMOLED screen ...I have Galaxy S ...but yeah some problem exist in night...
Closed AccountJul 26, 2010
You have a Super AMOLED screen - it doesn't have the same issue.
darkmatter911Jul 26, 2010
What? I have no issues with my the veiwability of my AMOLED screen indoors or at night. During the day in the sun is a different story.
thandermaxJul 26, 2010
What about GPS performance ? Is it corrected in recent update?
jabbrwockeyJul 26, 2010
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't moving away from LED bad on a mobile device?

Anybody have any info on Son'y SuperLCD? I can't find much about it.
invaderdemJul 26, 2010
If it's true that the new displays can help with battery life/power management, let's hope these make their way to the EVO. Great phone, but you literally have to charge it every night - even general use will drain it down.
protodonJul 26, 2010
Okay so OLED world domination is definitely never happening.
krayvisJul 26, 2010
Isn't the Nexus One officially dead? Why do they mention it?
vozeJul 26, 2010
Apparentally this was due to some kind of shortage: http://www.pcworld.com/article/201883/shortages_prompt_htc_to_swap_display_technologies.html/
Though I'm unsure if they're referring to a shortage of the phones or a shortage of the actual AMOLED displays to cater for the increasing demand for HTC phones.
Anyone have thoughts on image quality on the new SLCD vs the AMOLED displays?
spacemanspiff22Jul 26, 2010
This move isn't as much about the technology being better as it is Samsung just not being able to satisfy demand for the screens (or perhaps they don't want to, with their own devices hitting every carrier now). Obviously they'll try and spin it now to suggest that the technology is better, which in some ways it is.
The whole battery life argument is stupid, though, considering there are aftermarket batteries for these htc phones with significantly higher capacity that fit inside the regular back cover of the phones. If htc really cared about battery life it could have spent a couple extra dollars and shipped those with the phones to begin with.
Closed AccountJul 26, 2010
A lot of people commenting on this article seem confused, so I'll make it clear: AMOLED > Super LCD. They're moving to Super LCD because samsung can't keep up with demand. However, samsung is building a HUGE new AMOLED plant, costing almost $4b.
eroc668Jul 26, 2010
Perhaps we have a different idea of moderate usage or maybe I go longer without charging because since rooting I have definitely noticed improved battery life. My droid usually gets unplugged around 6:30 or 7:00am and gets charged again between 11:00pm-12:00am. I usually listen to pandora/last.fm radio on my way to and from work for about an hour and browse the web as well. I text alot throughout the day, and often check my email and make a phone call or two. Before I rooted my droid, I would usually be at 30-40% by the time I got home from work around 6:30 but now I am getting a few extra hours before it gets that low.
blorcJul 26, 2010
But I thought LCD was a thing of the past and Apple was a dinosaur for using it? Where's all the outrage by Android users?
