I don't hate Apple but I also recognize that they are an innovative force in the industry. When they released the iPhone I was really happy because I knew they set the pace for better mobile devices. What I want now? Apple to make bluetooth headphones the default of the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Did he really just say that Jobs' style was excessively truthful and then go on to say that that wasn't his own style?

CrimsonBlur, you hit the nail on the head. If Jobs wasn't a hustler, neither he or Apple would be where they are today.

I like Apple products and I occassionally I think Jobs is an assh**e. Look at the way he treated his own kid for years ... I don't think it's unfair to say he isn't a great guy.
Good business man, hell yes ...
Good person, probably not...
hermmunsterJul 21, 2010
Yes, people do rip on others for that reason. But, there are those that also know his history an don't wish to propagate a false image of him. You should take the time to read about Apple's early history by those that wrote books about Apple during that time.
cyborg31Jul 22, 2010
Really daleok? Isn't that the same excuse you use to rip on Bill Gates, Eric Schmidt, everyone not as awesome as the almighty Lord Steve Jobs?

Among businessmen "hustler" is sort of an insult. It is fine to expand your business through aggression and what not but they have their own sort of standards.
Calling him a hustler implies he is deceptive in a way they are not and that he isn't as respectable a businessman.

Look, as long as gullible people have money, someone is going to take it from them, at least Steve is providing them with an undeserved sense of superiority... it's not all that dissimilar to what religion offers when you think about it.
At least you can sell your used Apple product on Craigslist when the improved model comes out 3 weeks after you buy it.

Yearly plus old Apple products have some of the best resale value going.
Your old product doesn't lose functionality when a new one comes out. There is no forced upgrade. Damn a company for continually making better products! It's down right evil.

@Daniel I welcome the competition of Android phones in the marketplace. You're not tied to single carrier and, no matter when you're eligible for an upgrade, you can have instant satisfaction of getting a great phone that's less than 6 months from launch. That said, I'm an iPhone owner, but probably not for much longer.
cthellisJul 21, 2010
I don't see anyone disputing that Android phone options are a bad thing. Just that they actually resemble SSPink's complaint.
If "complaint" it could even count as. I mean, it's f**king technology. What idiot wants technological advancement to stagnate so they can feel better about their purchases?

Windows is an East LA crack house, but it's a little cheaper than Apple so it's so worth it. Cheap is always the mark of quality. And you can buy 5 parts at Best Buy, plug them together and tell people you "built your own PC". Awsome. Oh and lets not forget, everyone (100,000+ people in the U.S. alone) who make a living fixing Windows computers highly recomend them. Cause you know, they are sooo good.
Oh Oh and my favorite: My Windows box is virus free. Cause the russian programers who made my AV program are not the same russian programsers who make the botnets. No way that could be true.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I don't use Windows, Tex. I use BSD systems, which is far unlike your Fisher Price, Unix bastard toy.
alexbarnes94Jul 21, 2010
While there are more Windows viruses in existence (only because the vast majority of people use Windows), that doesn't mean that Macs are perfectly safe. There are probably just as many vulnerabilities in Macs (including this one: http://www.itwire.com/your-it-news/home-it/23941-mac-hacked-in-under-10-seconds-at-pwn2own), but less people exploit them because it's not worth their time to reach a smaller market. All that being said, it's really dependent upon the user. Before I switched to Linux three months ago, I spent about 15 years as a Windows user and only got one virus (from an infected flash drive). I know Mac users who constantly get viruses because they aren't even remotely tech-savvy. It's more dependent on the user than anything else.

WTF is up with "sense of superiority" I use lot's of Apple product's (As well as Sony, Microsoft, Lenovo, HTC... etc) not because they are cool, but because they do a task in a certain situation better then the alternatives. If something truly better comes along (and survives) I switch. Hell I don't even get this "Apple User" label... I use Apple Products, but Apple doesn't own me. Anyone who feels that they, or others, are judged by the products they use instead of the results they attain from said products are assh**es with mental issues. (yes that would include @SSPink)

Dugg for comparing Apple to a religion. Sense of community, righteousness, temple (Apple Store), evangelist, fanatics. The Simpsons did it already, but you're still right.

Sometimes an Apple product does something better than any of their competitors. Like Macs running Adobe Creative Suite. Not all Apple users are ignorant, but it's fantastic that if they choose to be, they can and still get stuff done.

It's called envy. As someone else has said, all the most successful business men are great hustlers. They know how to talk to people and get them to see things their way, gain their trust, and business. If you can't hustle you are going to fail at business.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
osabr22000Jul 21, 2010
Not once, but twice... but ONCE. After all, that first "empire" you are referring to, he lost in a few years. No matter what... you don't just create and lose an "empire" in a few years. "Empires" kind of last.
hermmunsterJul 21, 2010
You really need to spend some time learning what Jobs was/is really like. He was removed from any operating role at Apple twice for a reason. After leaving Apple he did hire the best talent to teach him how to run a company. Yes, he paid big money to the top business educators to teach him how to fix his flaws. Nothing wrong with that, but it tells you something about him from before.
Guy was being too nice. He says Jobs was too truthful. Actually he was manic. He screamed and yelled at people at the top of his lungs. He was a huge problem for the company early on. He was also great salesman. He still breaks under pressure when he's mad at forces he can't control, such as the press. Hence his attacks on the press regarding the iPhone 4 publicity. You can't educate Steve's kind of flaw out of him. You can only hope he keeps it under control.

A hit piece on the guy who founded both Apple and Pixar. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.
hermmunsterJul 21, 2010
He didn't found Pixar. He bought it, and has had hardly any role in its operation since the beginning.
majorisJul 22, 2010
Technically and practically wrong.
Technically, saved the team that is now Pixar from LucasArts and founded them as Pixar. He was the founder of Pixar.
Practically wrong, because without Steve Jobs, it's not obvious that the graphics team would have gone on to make movies at all without him (or a successful one).
hermmunsterJul 31, 2010
Not on your life. Pixar was fine before Jobs, during and after. Jobs has been inconsequential for Pixar, except maybe for funding.
Your point is moot as no one could predict the future for Pixar. You apparently don't know Pixar's history.

puxxorJul 21, 2010
So.., let's see if I have this correct. You aren't judging people by saying "they've been suckered into buying" and calling someone a "fool" because they bought something that you don't like?
jshhmrJul 21, 2010
You spent HOW much on an iPod, because of a picture of fruit? I have an mp3 player that can do MORE than an iPod, supports multiple formats, and I don't have to f**k with iTunes. The cost? $40!! Again, how much did you pay for your fruit pod? Taneth is right!
tanethJul 22, 2010
puxxor: no. I'm calling him a fool because he judges people's worth based on how many apple products they've bought. And now I'm calling you a fool for being incapable of seeing that.
jamaph: convenient as in don't have to plug it into the computer to load more music onto it, plays every format out there, doesn't need a buggy clunky crashy program to download more, free music, has a built-in radio, doesn't break in my hand and is not contaminated with DRM? Doesn't sound like an iPod to me.
jamaphJul 24, 2010

First moron, Guy Kawasaki was a well known name in Apple's history for a lot of years. He was one of a few top Apple evangelists. He had daily direct contact with Steve Jobs and Wozniak. He was also a tech journalist for several years and has moved on to become a venture capitalist.
He was being kind to Jobs in this interview which was done in 2008.
wemessyJul 21, 2010
This was so disappointing. The headline makes it sound like a serious accusation of deceptiveness, or at least a snub. Kawasaki ends up just complimenting Jobs as a good salesman and repeating the trite observation that Jobs and Woz balance each other out well. Buried.

p3ngwinJul 21, 2010
what i heard in this clip was that Steve Jobs should never have severed ties with Woz. Steve's greedy and insecure Ego got the better of him, something Woz has little of. Woz lives for the love of it, and cares less about selling it. this is why Woz didn't put floating point calculations in the spreadsheet program that Apple was selling, and when microsoft offered a spreadsheet with floating point ability, Apple switched.
Walt Disney had the creative, the realist and the marketer all in one. Walt Disney was a genius, and a beautiful person. Steve Jobs is good at 1/3 of that equation, Woz was another 1/3. together they were a great pair and could have done so much more than simply refresh the same old hardware every 12 months, only to bring a truly new product every ~3 years.
