Android is coming up strong. I wonder if it will beat the tar out of iPhone when all is said and done?
meninostongueAug 6, 2010
I think it'll be more like the desktop OS situation with Apple and Microsoft. Apple will probably sell more than any individual brand of Android, but Android overall will be bigger as the sum of all brands. Despite Android starting as a reaction to iOS, in a few years, they'll both be old enough that the age difference matters less and they'll continue to push each other to innovate.
Fortunately, both are very good, and offer different approaches to their product rather than huge differences in functionality.
chingy1788Aug 6, 2010
Actually Android started before the iPhone released
Google bought Android in 2005 from a company called Android Inc apparently co-founded by an old Apple engineer
mabakerbrakerAug 6, 2010
Android started to INNOVATE? Give me a f**king break. How old are you? 13?
Android copied the HELL out of Symbian, fanboii and implemented some features that Symbian had in 2003.
And once Apple released the iPhone Google COMPLETELY revamped their prototypes to copy the iPhone.
Check the facts and don’t spread FUD.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

@mabakbkbkbk: remove the stick
mabakerbrakerAug 6, 2010
Truth hurts, ain’t it.
meninostongueAug 6, 2010
Exactly what kind of "fanboii" am I, Apple or Android? I referred to both companies in that sentence. It must take a special kind of paranoia to see something so offensively one sided in a 100% balanced statement.
Now, on to the "substance" of your rant. Regardless of if they ripped the code from Symbian wholesale (honestly, I'm not that big of a phone geek to know), the software has changed and matured since its inception. Both companies have refined their interfaces, features, etc. in the few years that they have been in their current incarnations. MacOS originally took ideas from Xerox and Windows, in turn, took from Apple. Both OSes are now so far beyond those beginnings with totally new code, interfaces, features, capabilities, etc., that they can be appreciated as original entities by any reasonable person.
Picasso wasn't the first cubist painter. Mozart wasn't the first classical composer. Shakespeare wasn't the first play write. All started out with the influences and ideas of people before them and made it into something original. The same is true with everything you enjoy from arts to food to booze to engineering, and yes, to technology. It's not worth getting so angry over it.

I love Android but it's not for everyone. For lack of a better term they'd need to "dumb it down" to make it more appealing to a wider group of users. I hope they don't but in it's current state not everyone gets it.
I want the one with the more GB's.

I've got an android phone, and I had an iPod touch, and I don't have any idea why you would say someone could use one but not the other. HotRats may have been over the top, but he's absolutely right. Touch it and it does something, it's pretty simple. Anyone who would have an issue with one would have the same issues with both, and it would likely because they didn't want to touch something they shouldn't and break it.......they'd need a quick little tutorial from a friend no matter which device they chose...
chris4404Aug 6, 2010
I didn't mean it as a jab at anyone, I have an EVO and love it. In my experience out of BlackBerry, iOS and Android, Android's the hardest for people to jump into. What's a widget? Task Killer? It's just not out of the box as easy as the others.
liltbrockieAug 6, 2010
lol shut up you ignoramus.
mantherAug 6, 2010
LOL. If you don't know what a task killer or a widget are, then you simply won't use one... It's not like you're really missing out on much...especially if you don't know what you're missing out on....
And let's be really honest here, if you're taking an android device and not using the features that you don't know how to use, and you're comparing THAT to the blackberry or iOS, then I'd think it's pretty safe to say that android IS for everyone, and simply concede that not everyone will use/understand the full power of it...
zelgadissAug 7, 2010
Personally I think Android needs more polish.
Tried the Galaxy S a while back. It was a no go.
Now I have never used an iPhone before but I did own an iPod touch, so it might have tainted my experience quite a bit.
Among all the annoyances, some valid some because I wasn't used to it, the f**ked-up-ness of Android's text selection/cut/copy/paste was the last straw for me.
I ordered an iPhone 4.
Maybe my next phone I will give it another shot.
aronwyrthAug 6, 2010
A lot of that will depend upon whether or not Apple is able to move beyond AT&T to include other carriers. If they do, the competition will then, and ONLY then, be based upon customer choice of platform. Apple missed an early opportunity by tying themselves to only one carrier, and if they can't expand, then Android will surely prevail, at least as far as number of phones is concerned.
On the other hand, Apple has never really concerned itself with being the biggest of anything, and as long as the brand itself remains strong - which is very likely - they will probably be quite happy in the number two or three spot. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
paradigmxAug 6, 2010
If yer not 1st, yer last...
jb4062Aug 6, 2010
Even if there was an iphone for all of the carriers I would still get an android phone.
The reason? Quite simply choice. I'm not stuck with the same form factor with the same hardware feature set with the same options. If I want a keyboard, I can get that, if I want a large screen, I can get that, if I want an iphone clone I can even get that. Why would I limit myself for no reason at all.
kazbaedenAug 6, 2010
Even in countries where the iPhone is available on multiple carriers android is growing at similarly astounding rates.

trifoldAug 6, 2010
But you probably know a lot of people who just upgraded to an "internet phone" or "smartphone" or similar. Android's reaching the point where it's on so many devices, a lot of people who want an "iPhone-type phone" with their current carrier end up with Android phones. Do they know they have "Android" phones? Probably not. But it's become simple and easy enough to use for the average everyday non-tech user, and really that's all that matters to the end user (just ask Apple).
showri01Aug 6, 2010
I think a lot of ppl just assume that the only smartphones out there with the Android OS is the Droid series. Either that or they just assume that the Android OS is called Droid OS. I have an HTC Evo and about 50% of the ppl who see me using it ask if it's one of those Droids. When I tell them that it is an Evo but it too has the Android OS like a Droid they tend to nod and walk away.

Keep in mind there's a 'phone cycle' to account for. If all of your friends were toting around new phones a year ago, they likely have 6-12 more months before they can get an upgrade... A year ago the only real Android offerings were the DROID and Eris, and if your friends really are tech people like you say, then they, like myself, know better than to snag the first release, because in a couple of months there's going to be a much better option available. Personally, I managed to snag a used Eris for dirt cheap, and I'll use that until my contract runs out in a couple of months so that I won't even have to settle for the best phone on my carrier, I'll be able to get the best phone out there and switch to a cheaper carrier if I have to... If I hadn't found the Android phone so cheap, I'd still be using my old BB Curve...

Apples to oranges, actually. Android is an operating system whereas iPhone is a device. Typical Apple fanatic response.
Anyways, in response to your asshatery, I have a few counter points.
1. "It is more beautiful" - Beauty is subjective. What you think is gorgeous looks like a grid of buttons to me. To each their own, I guess.
2. "Easier to use" - I'll give you this one. Though I'm a fan of buttons. You know, the things you need to access application menus and whatnot?
3. "More reliable" - In doing what? Making phone calls? I think not. Sending email? Nope. Browsing the web? Nope. Service? Nope.
4. Antennegation on that scale isn't present on any other device. Touching it in the right spot should not create a loss of service. There's a difference between a short and impeding the signal.
5. One man's experiences does not mean that this experience is shared by everyone. Besides, even Android users admit that the Hero is a s**tty device now.
6. "More talented developers" - Oh, you mean like those behind DropBox, Shazam, Angry Birds, Facebook, Google Services, Twitter, Digg, Epicurious, Engadget, PayPal, SlingBox, Hulu, YouTube, etc? You're right, Android has very few truly awesome applications - but ALL of iOS's good apps are also on Android.

the fact that the term 'jailbreak' has entered into the mainstream lexicon speaks volumes about what kind of company apple really is.
nickkukAug 6, 2010
Me too, I was never bothered about Apple, but since they started their silly "magical" and "revolutionary" adverts which are just pure bulls**t I always enjoy it when Apple products are proven to be less than perfect magical devices.

Whoever took over Apple's recent marketing, honestly should be fired.
When did hooting your own horn become good marketing?
Just tell us the features of your product in a clear manner.
We will decide if it's "magical" and "revolutionary".
tolljumperAug 6, 2010
Same thing happen to apple in the 90's. Mac was a revolutionary product but it cost way too much, and it was entirely closed off and difficult to develop for. Other companies just copied it and developers flocked to the alternative. Its amazing, it is history repeating itself.
cosmicvAug 6, 2010
Finally a comment that I would have made. Your right, Apple has made the same stupid mistake now it made then... Not being being able to upgrade the SDRAM in the phone? Are you seriously that stupid Apple?
zelgadissAug 7, 2010
Well Apple might have actually came little ahead in development this time round.
iPhones have relatively few hardware configs, this helps when developers write "intensive" apps like games, as they can write to the metal.
Apple's App Store is available world wide, both free and paid apps available, this certain helps distribution. Google's mishandling of the Android market is really hurting the platform.
On the downside we have a walled garden and inconsistent policy when it comes to what is considered an acceptable app. Most developers don't run into any issues but when they do I imagine it would be quite a bitch.
That and you have to pay for a developer's licence.

I looked up the AdMob metrics, and whether you choose to believe it or not, they say in April 2010, there were 11.6 million unique Android phones. With 200,000 android phone activations per day, even if we take a pessimistic view that 100,000 of those 200,000 are people with existing android phones getting new ones, that means every ten days, the Android population increases by about 6% - 9% (if you're estimating the current android population is at 15 million to 11 million)Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

We've changed our theme. The font, the colors, logo, etc. We're doing the sound theme next. Google should learn from Sense. The home screen navigation is nice. That doesn't change that I should be able to uninstall or disable it. ..And please, it's "Ubuntu". Linux happens to be the kernel we use right now and in the foreseeable future, but we've gone to great lengths to remove it from our brand due to the different priorities held by those who have historically used and advocated it. For example, if you search the main page at http://www.ubuntu.com for "linux", you will not find it once. Removing "linux" from Ubuntu' motto would have raised a geek outcry. ....Effectively retiring the motto avoided this elegantly.
We will do what it takes to fix bug number one.
yaazzAug 6, 2010
I am confused, you represent google? You represent Ubuntu?
Ubuntu is great, its a linux distro that has all the cmd tools I need out of the box.

Both are pretty ugly. Ubuntu is a little better with its new UI but still not great.
