gizmodo.com — Well this is kinda wacky. Citing a "very credible source," Digg founder Kevin Rose tweeted that Google is preparing to release "Google Me," a service intended to go toe-to-toe (face-to-face?) with Facebook. It's like Google stalking, but official, and thus marginally less creepy!

Google, are you really that desperate? Please don't become a monster like Facebook, I love you how you are.
gregloireJun 28, 2010
What if your Facebook profile just comes up when you Google yourself?
seltaeb4Jun 28, 2010
If anyone can dethrone Facebook, but keep it simple like Facebook did before they allowed applications to turn them into another myspace, I'd welcome it.
airnikeJun 28, 2010
it's not even the point they have applications, they probs have some pretty cool oppurtunities with apps n social networking. They need to get off the farmville crap and get WOW through facebook. :)
falserJun 28, 2010
probs?
here's a tip: when you write like it's a text message it shows your age.

The only way it can be a Facebook killer is if my friends migrate over as well. Otherwise, it's pointless when I don't have anyone else to add.
elranzerJun 28, 2010
Cuz that problem really ruined Facebook's chances of beating MySpace. Esepcially when Facebook limited itself to college students.
icmusic33Jun 28, 2010
What happened to Buzz.....
It was like a s**tty Wednesday night out. Hear all these rumors from friends of friends about a killer party at your favorite spot. None of your friends have heard about it and they don't seem to interested on going out on Wednesday, rather than their their favorite days. You say "f**k it, it's going to be awesome" and go out anyways. When you get to the party there are three people you have met once and a bunch of bots. You go home dissapointed and slightly pissed wondering what could have been.
bustajamJun 28, 2010
There is not a SINGLE person currently employed by Google who thinks this is goingto kill Facebook.
chrizzly89Jun 28, 2010
I see it coming:
Google Me proves to be good and people migrate over as well and the only thing left is deleting that god damn Facebook account. It going to be a battle.

redraven9Jun 28, 2010
It can very well be a Facebook killer. Now that people are getting tired of Facebook many are just waiting for a new craze to follow. For now it could be anything, and even though Google is "new", they are the mighty contender, . However the name frightens me, reminded me of Windows ME *shivers*
masterkenobiJun 28, 2010
In other news, Apple comes out with their own social networking app, called "Apple Me". Shortly after, they filed an additional patent lawsuit against HTC.
robdazombaJun 28, 2010
Yeah, brah! Apple is evil.

sirbetaJun 28, 2010
I really wish people would stop using the "<x> killer" line. <x> rarely rarely rarely ever kills <y>.
fritzJun 28, 2010
True, I immediately discount anything that is termed an "x-killer"

When will they realize I'm on the internet all day because I don't want to be social.
shawn789Jun 28, 2010
f**k Gizmodo. Seriously. I'm f**king tired of Gizmodo doing completely skeezy s**t for a story. Like paying some guy $5000 for an iPhone prototype. And outing minor employees who f**k up at major corporations, endangering their jobs. And taking a 2-line tweet and completely blowing it out of proportion. Did this really deserve an article with complete backstory. Anyone who would care about this wouldn't need backstory and would also probably be following Kevin Rose on Twitter anyway, which means they probably would have already read this.
Again, f**k Gizmodo.
Oh, and isn't the next iteration of Digg supposed to also compete with Facebook?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
danbarkerJun 28, 2010
The next version of digg (which I am on now) does not compete with facebook... its compleatly different (and cooler). Its more like twitter has now become (linkage) but more efficient and better looking.
hardeep1singhJun 28, 2010
Instead of launching new social networks everyday, Google should fix their oldest network Orkut. It still has more users than many other run of the mill social networks.
ryebryeJun 28, 2010
It will be awesome when it leverages your social network's Google Latitude and your search habits to auto update your status section.
"According to latitude, Jimmy's mom left to go to the store. Jimmy is now searching for octopus-on-midget porn."
danbarkerJun 28, 2010
I think this is worrying. Why dont google just think about fixing their serch so all the SEO results dont always come out on top rather than the things that are relevent to the search!
reconfigurJun 28, 2010
Another method of presenting a solely SFW and socially acceptable version of yourself, which = generic. Yay.
utnowJun 29, 2010
yeah... this is more of a big deal than most people are willing to admit. I'm ok with being generic if it doesn't prevent me from be hirable. ;)
jocelynchiaJun 28, 2010
i don't think it's going to work (if the purpose is really to kill fb, or even take much traffic from it)...as fattony89 implied - fb is way too entrenched in the lives of everyone for us to all make the switch this late in the game. friendster did not have that amount of ubiquity when facebook came in. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
aronnycJun 28, 2010
Technology writers need to stop attaching "killer" to every new, rumored thing that's about to come out. It makes them sound like 8 year old idiots.
fredfredricksonJun 28, 2010
Google already knows enough about me. I'm not going to willingly fork over all my other information too.
zayamsJun 28, 2010
I doubt so but indeed market giants have to test and trial to be the preferred choice of the user. However, even if we see Orkut couldn't able to cope up with the aura facebook exponentially created right in front of its eyes, so you never know if thought well enough by Google (which they are capable of) we may see GoogleMe as the ultimate choice in few years down the line.
stairwaywitJun 28, 2010
God I hope it kills Facebook.
I'd rather have an ad on the side for sexy singles than f**king Mafia Wars any day.
jayneshJun 28, 2010
When facebook is killed, it will be replaced again and again. Social networks need to be killed!
prlmeJun 28, 2010
no farmville no deal!
revenzJun 28, 2010
they wrote an article about kevin roses tweet and this is on digg? why not just digg the tweet? buried.
robdazombaJun 28, 2010
Great. Safe to assume Google will save me the hassle of joining and just opt me and my gmail account in against my will?
aciddropzJun 28, 2010
I'm still Riding the "Google Wave".... NOT!!!!
atroxodisseJun 28, 2010
Never gonna happen. Everyone is on facebook and no one likes to switch. It was easy to switch from myspace because it wasn't nearly as popular and your mom and all her friends weren't on it. Wait...
robskim101Jun 28, 2010
just like Chrome was the Firefox killer...
...Oh wait

That's great when is digg going to roll out their latest version of their website?
onlinejoeJul 1, 2010
Google simply has to try to dominate every possible market possible. They are getting much worse at it too. YouTube doesn't count either because they didn't make it.
Ermm.. isn't that why they have Orkut?
johnnysoftwareJul 3, 2010
There was a sample web service out for public testing or comment a half year ago that did a really good job of figuring out a LOT of supposedly completely independent social web sites a person had used, and it unified them all together. It was a little creepy. Kind of intimating being stalker-like without really implying any really useful purpose or virtues.
